obama_with_hs_students.jpgDo you remember the commencement speaker at your high school graduation? Well, this year the event will be absolutely memorable for one lucky high school class when President Obama climbs the podium to offer inspiration to the national winner of his President’s Commencement Challenge.

The White House and the Department of Education announced last week a new contest, inviting public schools across the country to "Race to the Top", and show how they are making strides toward personal responsibility, academic excellence and college readiness.

Interested high school students will submit a two-minute video or written essay demonstrating how their school is helping prepare students to meet the President’s 2020 goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.  Applications will be judged based on the school’s performance and dedication to providing students an excellent education that will prepare them to graduate ready for college and career choices. Apply for the Commencement Challenge here.

The Obama Administration took additional steps to address the drop-out epidemic this week, beginning with a pledge of $900 million in grants to states and education districts that agree to drastically transform or even close their worst performing schools.

afghan-playground-schoolkids-unama.jpgSheikh Misri was once known as a dreary and rough desert of barren land littered with landmines and unexploded ordinances.

Now, after four years of relentless synchronized efforts by the UN, the Government of Afghanistan, international aid agencies and individuals, life there is thriving.

“This otherwise lifeless desert is now home to about 2,500 families…” There is bus service, a school, a clinic, a newly constructed road from the nearest highway and a 20-bed hospital, which has almost been completed.

wind-turbine-victorville-prison-ca.jpgAn increasing number of correctional facilities in the United States and in other countries are turning to wind power to supply energy to their 24-hour operations.

With the rising cost of fossil fuels, governments are finding that investing in wind energy at correctional facilities makes sense.

The first wind turbine at an American prison (right) has helped offset energy costs at the federal prison in Victorville, Calif., since its installation in 2005.

haiti-unicef-tent-sun.jpgTwo boys walk over the steep hillsides of Haiti, the first time in a month they've been able to go to school. It was destroyed, like thousands of others, in the magnitude 7 earthquake. Government buildings too, were destroyed, including the ministry of education. Despite this, Haiti's Minister of Education, based now in UNESCO's Port au Prince office, has been hard at work to get Haitian children back to school in whatever way he can.

To help in this heroic effort, 150 UNICEF Schools In a Box, which include a stand-alone emergency school tent and school supplies, have arrived at the UN organization's storage facility to cater to affected areas. After an intensive training session with volunteer Haitian boy scouts on erecting the tents, the distribution begins.
