The Italian government banned the use of several pesticides that are blamed for the deaths of millions of honeybees. They issued an immediate suspension of the seed treatment products that have somehow contributed to recent bee death and are launching further investigations. (Environmental News Network)

This sounds like something out of Readers' Digest, but recently a neighbor went for a walk up Falls Creek (near our home), found a baby moose in some distress in the creek, got him out of the creek, tried to send him on his way, tried to find the mother, but eventually the moose stumbled back into the creek, was rescued again, and followed Jonathon home.

A scientist at the University of Tokyo has discovered that elephants
not only have a good memory but they also are proficient at basic
math. Under carefully controlled experimental conditions, an elephant at
the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo has managed to get its sums right 87 percent of the time.

Encroachment by palm oil plantations into elephant habitat have greatly increased conflicts between humans and elephants. Now the Indonesian government is to double the size of a national park that is one of the last havens for endangered Sumatran elephants and tigers.
Tesso Nilo National Park was created in 2004 with 38,000 hectares of forest. Today’s declaration will increase that number to 86,000 by the end of this year.

Renewable energy markets surged in the United States in the first half of this year -- including wind power, on a pace to increase 45% in 2008 -- despite uncertainty over federal tax credits and a sluggish national economy. Wind, solar, and geothermal energy are all on the rise. According to the Energy Information Administration, renewable energy will account for about one-third of new electricity generation added to the U.S. grid over the next three years.
