Free Plastic Bags To Be Banned in Australia

The state government of Victoria will be first in Australia to charge for every plastic grocery bag used. Environment Minister John Thwaites said a similar approach banning free bags at some stores, and charging 10 cents for the plastic, had reduced bag consumption by 99 percent.
"Non-biodegradable plastic bags kill substantial numbers of whales, seals, turtles and other marine wildlife," Mr Thwaites said. (Read further about the success of such a project elsewhere)...

Loggerhead Turtle Nests Up 22% as Wildfire Burns Nearby

Nesting activity for the threatened Loggerhead Sea Turtle on Blackbeard Island in Georgia has increased 22 percent over its 30-year average. Let's hope they survive a wildfire, burning on the island since July 6. Historically, fires are natural and create positive effects, explains Biologist Deb Barnard.

Schwarzenegger/California in Global Warming Lead

Here is an article revealing a real solution by California to tackle global warming. In the next two months the Democrat-controlled state legislature, working with Republican Governor Schwarzenegger, are set to enact two new laws that would make the state North America's leader in addressing global warming. The measures would reduce the state's carbon dioxide emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020.

77,000 Acres of Pristine Forest Purchased for Protection in Guatemala

ocelot One of the largest and most intact privately owned forest lands in Guatemala is now protected from development. The Nature Conservancy purchased two pristine holdings totaling 77,000 acres in the heart of the Maya Biosphere Reserve last month. The two parcels are in middle of the 500,000-acre Sierra Del Lacandon National Park, home to several endangered species such as puma, jaguar, tapir, anteater, howler monkey, ocelot, scarlet macaw and the Moreletti crocodile, which is unique to this region of Central America...
