climate-satelite.jpgEfforts to tackle global warming received a boost today with the successful launch of a Japanese satellite, the first to monitor greenhouse gases from space.

The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite “IBUKI” (or “GOSAT” in its English-language acronym) is the first satellite to observe greenhouse gases and monitor changes in the effects they cause. It was launched from the island of Tanegashima, in southern Japan, by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), a key partner in addressing disaster risk reduction and environmental issues for the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

car-finish.jpgScratches in a car's finish are inevitable, no matter how one tries to be careful. That's why car lovers will clamor for this new innovation by Dutch scientists at TNO Research.

In the past, a big scratch has equaled an expensive touch-up, or worse, a complete paint job requiring time in the auto shop and even more money. If ignored, rust might settle in.

But now, researchers at the Dutch institute TNO are perfecting what, to the car, is like the human skin, a protective layer with the capability to ‘repair’ itself after a cut or scratch.

iya.jpgA large cluster of astronomers were sighted in Paris last week at the official launch of the International Year of Astronomy. Planned to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first observations of the heavens with a telescope, the year, also known as IYA 2009, will commence under the theme ‘The Universe, Yours to Discover.’ The celebration is meant to reignite the wonder that the starry skies have always provoked in humankind and promote astronomy's contribution to society, culture and development.

“People have always looked to the sky for answers to the questions ‘How did we get here?’ and ‘Why are we here?’” said Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO,  the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The gala opening at the agency’s headquarters gathered astronauts, artists, diplomats, industrialists and astronomy undergraduates from over 100 countries.

“The sky belongs to everybody,” Mr. Matsuura said. "Astronomy is an instrument to promote peace and understanding among nations.”

The two-day launch ceremony featured presentations by Nobel prize winners Bob Wilson and Baruch Blumberg, reports of the latest discoveries, discussions on the role of astronomy in culture and public engagement, real-time astronomical observation and a closing performance by the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet. greener-parking-light.pngEven after daytime users drive home, parking lots and garages light up the night.  Evening users are few, but for safety reasons, the lights stay on.

Yesterday, the California Lighting Technology Center at UC Davis debuted an innovative, highly efficient, greener way to park cars that additionally provides more safety for students and motorists using parking garages.

Michael Siminovitch, director of the school's lighting-center and a professor in the Design Program, saw all that wasted light and knew there had to be a better way.

The innovative result, unveiled in a UC Davis parking garage after two years of development and field testing, is a highly efficient greener way to park cars.
