ginger cascades camp siteEDITOR'S BLOG
This weekend I brought our kids and myself to the Ginger Cascades Girl Scout camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. For your daily dose of News to Enthuse, I'm making a car trip once a day with my laptop to surf the local library's WiFi network in Hickory, NC. So, updates will not be as plentiful while I enjoy some time off this weekend. (Hickory, by the way, is a small and stately city with a handsome historical district. It hosts two college campuses and many young families pushing strollers on sidewalks lined with huge trees and manicured lanes.

A group of NC homeschoolers rented the camp and handled details for 30 families so we could play (and sometimes learn) together for four days. Most of us are "unschoolers" and practice natural learning. We don't believe our kids need textbooks, curriculums, and most certainly, standardized tests, to become smart, educated, lifelong learners. In fact, those things often deter the creative kid by setting up a pattern of rebellion, resentment or apathy toward learning. (Sound familiar?)

bees swarm in a treeEDITOR'S BLOG

The full name of the honeybee that arrived at my backdoor in a huge swarming mass is Apis mellifera ligustica. We live on the water in a semi-wooded area so we've logged many great wildlife stories over the years. But the honeybee adventure this weekend ranks near the top. And it's a neat example of positive thinking leading to good outcomes in one's life. I insist (in Why Good News) that if you consciously focus your thoughts on the positive, you will have less sickness, less misfortune, less loss, less failure, less crime, less fear and less futility over the long run of your life.

When I saw the bees, I might have latched onto fears of "African bees" or generally bad outcomes, but I immediately swatted any fears away, and focused on finding a solution calmly. As a result I was led down a truly enjoyable path.

EDITOR'S BLOG

I want to tell you about some new content on the site. First, I continue uploading by category the stories archived from 1997-2003. Good Samaritans is almost complete and is definitely worth checking out. Joomla, the engine controling our site, displays all the articles by title so you can browse easily and click on anything that looks juicy to you. To me, one of the juiciest is from Jan 10, 1999: Spending $50,000 and Seven Years of Your Life, to Free a Stranger from Prison. Also, check out the 9-11 story of the tiny New Foundland town of Gander that cared for 53 jet planes blocked from reaching their destination after the attacks.

The Letters page is up and demonstrates the healing power of the Good News Network. Literally. Additionally, notes are featured from well-known people who have written to express their thanks for my compelling good news. . . . Ciao for now... geri

Happy Monday!

We have constantly improved our site since its launch on March 14, thanks especially to PassionSpire for the needed web services and technical expertise:
  • The Archive of more than 600 stories published from 1997-2003 is being moved here. It will be broken down for browsing by category and each three year period. You can also use our search engine to find old stories. Only the Earth and Inspiration sections have been moved so far.
  • A blog is being set up for me to do announcements (like this) and ramblings (like that). It is called "G is for blog".
  • Coming soon a calendar... Submit your dates and events for publishing
  • I finished posting "TWENTY MUSLIM INVENTIONS that Shaped Our World". If you haven't read them, you gotta check it out. One of the things GNN-i strives for is to break stereotypes. It doesn't get anymore compelling than this, especially for us westerners: Islamic science and cultural was WAY ahead of Europe in so many ways in earlier centuries.
I hope you have been enjoying the features like "On this day in history", and the "Inspiration Point" included for your morning coffee break. I would like some feedback, especially for the daily history item. Do you like it? Or does it take too much space away from news? What are your other comments about the content so far? I try honor your time by publishing only what is most compelling... Until next blog post ... geri

Growing Pains, and Glitches

Welcome to "G is for.... Blog"

G is for Growing pains and Glitches

Well, I sure needed those quotes this morning! (see below and also Inspiration Point for March 18 ) After a week of technical problems with the site, our glitches have yet to be resolved. On top of that, I ran into a website this morning with SO MANY of the features I want for this site -- technorati feed, de.licio.us tags preset for each story, multiple tags for each story that lead to related topics, headline links for mobile phones to bookmark... I feel that all this angst is forcing me to be smarter, to rise to the occasion... to be compassionate with myself. . . So I'm learning something, which is good. Try to see the good in your pain.

Pain is demanding that we get more loving and expansive."
