Brothers’ Winnings Benefit Animal Rescue Group

dog-biscuit-kids.jpgTwo Georgia brothers, 13, and 9, raised more than $1,200 for an animal rescue group last year and this month they increased that amount substantially with a $5,000 donation, thanks to a parenting magazine, which held a Littlest Volunteers Contest. Their burgeoning natural dog biscuit business over the past two years has earned for charity $1,700 so far. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

Group Builds Fences to Free Dogs Chained in Yards

chained-dog.jpgThe Coalition to Unchain Dogs has built fences to unchain 101 dogs in the past 17 months, giving sunnier dispositions to unhappy pets in the Raleigh-Durham area. "Cash," for example, on right, has spent most of his life chained up in the yard -- but not for much longer -- thanks to some of the more than 100 volunteers who erect the fencing and pay the costs. Homeless Vet Reunited with 'Soul Mate' he Thought was Euthanized (Video)

dog-kaiser.jpgA homeless disabled vet left a heartbreaking letter along with his dog on the sidewalk of the Granada Hills pet clinic. The writer poured his heart out about his loving companion, Kaiser, having suffered with a stroke. The manager at the clinic lost all emotional reserve in this case and could not bring herself to euthanize the animal. Instead she used money from a fund set up to help animals like Kaiser, and set about to reunite the two friends.

Relief for Consumers: Prices Falling

joy-jumper.jpgAfter sprinting to record levels this spring, the prices for basic commodities have now fallen 20 to 30 percent. Prices are now lower on staples such as rice, wheat, corn, and soybeans. Also down are prices for metals such as aluminum, zinc, and copper. The commodity almost everyone follows – oil – is off nearly 20 percent as well, dropping Friday to its lowest level since May 1.
