Vladimir Putin has made headlines by championing the endangered Siberian tiger — posing with a cuddly cub and placing a tracking collar on a full-grown female in the wilds of his country's Far East. Now Russia is helping plan an ambitious program it hopes can double the global tiger population by 2022. - AP
At the time the armed robbery in Brooklyn happened, Rodney Bradford was 13 miles away at his father's apartment in Harlem. Lucky for Rodney, he was also on Facebook. Little did he know that updating his status would help get him out of jail.
If he hadn't, Bradford, 19, might probably still be locked in a cell at Rikers Island.
That critical piece of evidence, time and date-stamped on Rodney's page, proved crucial to establishing his alibi and getting the charges dropped.
The internet has made the world a smaller place once again as a father located his daughter after a search of nearly three decades. The daughter decided one day to type in her name to see what a Google search would turn up. The website, www.aprilbecker.com, created by the father using the girl's name, appeared and led to a hearfelt reunion.
Colton Morman, 18, won the election for mayor Tuesday in tiny Dawson, Iowa, by a vote of 29-21.
Morman said that being the next mayor -- a post from which his grandfather is stepping down -- might be good experience for a future career in law. Mostly, he said, he just wants to help people.
"I just want to do something to give back," he said. "I've been here all my life."
Jordan Thomas was an active 16-year old athlete when he lost his legs in a boating accident while on vacation. He was rushed to the hospital where he met other amputees who weren't as fortunate as he.
"I just remember seeing so many kids who didn't have parents, didn't have health care," he said. "I just knew that the future was grim for them."
The top-of-the-line prosthetics Thomas was fitted with -- the ones that helped him return to the golf links -- cost about $24,000. He learned that many insurance plans cover only about $5,000.
That's especially tough on child amputees, who will outgrow several limbs before adulthood.
He asked his family to give a donation to help others, but ultimately, with their support, the teenager launched a fundraising foundation that has provided life-changing prosthetics costing more than $400,000 to children in need.
