dog in hospital-DUKE MEDICINE An important member of the surgical team at Duke University Medical Center this week doesn’t have a medical degree, or even a pedigree.

A terrier mix named JJ was invited into the procedure room because her nose is more sensitive than any medical instrument at detecting when 7-year-old Kaelyn Krawczyk is having a dangerous allergic reaction.

His North Carolina trainers believe the 2-year-old dog is the first dog to be trained to smell and react to the beginning of a mastocytosis flare-up.
