WARNING! The old browser, Internet Explorer version 6 will not be able to handle this modern website. Please update to v. 7 or, better yet, get Firefox! Firefox is the browser of choice for all webmakers and IT designers. It's faster, more secure, and can easily import your IE bookmarks with a touch of a button. (Download the FREE Firefox here and never worry about your browser again!)
There are many new features, like subscribing to the RSS feed, signing up for e-newsletters, and reading full stories, that are available to all visitors to the site. You can email any story to a friend. You can also email a link to the Good News Network to a friend.
Other features are only offered to those users who register. Registration is free and easy. We are not in the good news business to sell your name and e-mail so you don't need to worry about that. We do want to take care of liability issues, so just sign the user's agreement saying you won't sue us. Once you register and confirm with us by e-mail, you will be able to view your own user page on our site whenever you are logged in.
• There are seven sections — Family LIFE, RECREATION, BUSINESS, EARTH, HEALTH and INSPIRED! — and inside these seven are several separate categories, like PETS, GREAT KIDS (in Family Life); SPORTS, REVIEWS, CELEBRITIES (in Recreation); SCIENCE (in Earth) OPINIONS, RELIGIONS, INSPIRED! INDIVIDUALS (in the Inspired! section).
• As a registered user, you can add your comments about the stories. Your picture would show up next to your comment, if you upload one to your user page. Or, add a photo of your cat.
• As a registered user, you can submit your own good news to the editor.
• When you see a user's name anywhere on the site, you can click on it and view all the stories they've had published as an author, or you can send them an e-mail message.
• When you see an author's byline that is blue and clickable, it means the author is a GNN member, and you can click on their name and view all their stories.
• You can Submit a Story if you are a registered and logged-in member. This will appear as an option in your USER MENU in the top right column.
•
A Search function always appears in the upper right corner.
• Make a Suggestion and Contact Us are found at the very bottom of the homepage.
• What is RSS? The RSS feed is a free subscription syndication of our daily headlines. You need a RSS feed reader or aggregator on your computer to be able to subscribe and receive the headlines on your computer in real time. What is RSS? Find out here.
• Will I automatically receive the weekly newsletter if I am a registered user? No.
You must subscribe separately to receive The Top Ten Good News of the Week (with the Video of the Week) — a collection of the best stuff on the Web site. (Check out our Archives Section in the menu to see Top Ten lists from May through November, 2006, as well as the Top Ten Good News of the Year.) All you need to do is subscribe with your name and e-mail address. Click where it says subscribe on the front page... Get the good news delivered to your mailbox.
How come when I click on My Page, it doesn't work?
PC users with Firefox v.1.5 will only be able to navigate to the User Pages by clicking on a registered user's name (always seen as a link) on the site. We hope a fix will be found soon. Another work-around would be to use IE or an older version of Firefox.
I'm running Internet Explorer v. 6 for Windows and having trouble? Do I need to upgrade to IE 7? YES. To view our dynamic site properly, upgrade your browser, or switch to Firefox. (Firefox will import all your IE bookmarks.)
I am running Internet Explorer on Mac OS 9 and the page looks terrible ... why?
IE 5.2 is notorious for not adhering to web standards. We have yet to design a dynamic Joomla site that displays correctly on version 5.2. We've found that Netscape Navigator 4.7 will run on Mac OS9 and should work correctly, and better than IE.
Making GNN Your Home Page
It is simple to do in your browser. Just visit our home page in your browser window, and then go into your browser's PREFERENCES and you will see the option for HOME PAGE. Usually there is a button saying "Click to make this your home page."
