Four stories above the hot asphalt, the Federal Reserve Bank is planting its rooftop with a garden of low-growing plants interspersed with walkways and benches. Called a green roof, the 60,000-foot oasis will be the largest planted rooftop in North Carolina, an oasis for the bank’s 400 employees. But the bank’s officials are hoping for much more. The green technology is designed to double the roof’s life, lower the building’s energy costs and reduce harmful runoff into storm sewers.
Is there a green roof in your future? The Charlotte Observer tells you the likely answer is yes, in this fascinating story of innovation. (Great photos too!)
