In the decade ending in 2005, illnesses were down for virtually every major germ. Specific germs have actually dramatically declined, like yersinia, which decreased 49 percent, and shigella, 43 percent. The more well-known strains of the dangerous E. coli were down 29 percent; and salmonella, 9 percent. (federal CDC report)
