An entire marketplace burned to the ground in the poor West African country of Guinea-Bissau because they didn't have a working fire engine. The news reached the town of Plymouth, Mass, in the US, where some used fire trucks were hanging around -- and an ambulance too. Some local people bought the trucks, the fire department donated some hoses, and off they were shipped half way round the globe to people they didn't even know. (South Boston Enterprise)

Calling for 'ethical pharmaceuticals,' two professors have "devised a way to invent new medicines and get them to market at a fraction of the cost charged by big drug companies," enabling use in poor countries to cure infectious diseases and potentially slashing government expenditures on medicine. By altering the molecular structure of an existing, expensive drug they turn it technically into a new medicine, not under patent control, that can be made and sold cheaply. (Guardian) |

"A Portuguese man left money in his will to 70 people he randomly picked out of the phone book. He had no family. Each of the 70 will get around £6,000" What a whimsy! (Ananova) |

To coincide with National Anti-Bullying Week (19th-23rd November), the new European software, FearNot!, begins a six-week trial in the UK involving 600 school children from Hertfordshire and Warwick. 300 pupils in German schools will also be introduced to the interactive role-play software designed to tackle the problem of bullying. AP reports
on the new GM auto plant in Michigan unveiled as the "most
environmentally-friendly auto plant" in the world. It implements lots
of green innovations like:
______________________________________________
______________________________________________
The GM plant has a reflective roof to reduce heat absorption, saving
costs to cool the building. It also has 800 lights in the assembly
area, half that in a typical plant. About 80 percent of the waste generated during construction,
or nearly 4,000 tons, was diverted from landfills. Rainwater is
collected from the roof and used instead of potable water to flush
toilets.
