Lack of Short-Term Memory Doesn't Stop New Grad

College freshman Andrew Engel was diagnosed in 1995 with a malignant brain tumor, and after treatment was left without any short term memory. His doctors told him to forget about college, yet he never gave up. He made medical history in an experiment that taught how to store memory by reading things four or five times. Now, after studying at the University of Maryland in Baltimore for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, never missing a class, Andrew is graduating with a 4.0 average. (Listen to NPR interview)
 

New Fuel Standards for Beijing in Drive for Cleaner Olympics

Beijing introduced new vehicle fuel standards on Tuesday for gasoline and diesel, in another bid to ensure the "green Olympics"  China envisioned. Also this week, the city registered its 246th "blue sky day" on Monday, beating by one its goal for the year, to reduce the familiar smoggy haze in time remains a key concern for next year's Olympic Games.

 

 

One Man Has Sent 100,000 Students to College

In a Northern California town, one man, made it possible for anyone who wanted to go to junior college to do so. He created a scholorship fund 60 years ago and to date has sent 100,000 young people to college. This year a check for $5 million financed the education of 5,500 students, some whose grandparents received the same grant, thanks to Frank Doyle. (Morning Edition - audio only)
