National Football League fullback Tony Richardson has befriended 16-year-old Tyler Nelson, who needs lung and liver transplants or will eventually die without them.
They met through the Make-a-Wish Foundation when the N.Y. Jets player was visiting a roomful of kids but was struck by Nelson’s vast knowledge of football strategy and statistics, and by his boisterous laugh and wide smile. They have become as close as brothers.
The athlete knew little of Nelson’s suffering or diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, mainly because the boy never complained.
