Placed on the endangered species list in 1966, the largest animals on Earth are making a comeback, from the equator all the way up to the Gulf of Alaska.

Nearly hunted to extinction in the last century, the population of California blue whales, estimated to number around 2200, is now almost as high as it was in the early 1900sā€”a recovery being hailed as a conservation success story.
