The Golden Living Center in Wisconsin conjured some excitement for residents by coordinating a balloon launch that landed them new pen pals hundreds of miles across the white-capped waves of Lake Michigan.

The messages written by six seniors reached an enthusiastic family near Lansing, Michigan who not only wrote back, but sent a goodie package full of Michigan-made treats and a map showing exactly how far the balloons had traveled.

”It made it all the way across Lake Michigan to us,” Sandra Fowler, the recipient of the balloons, told WSAW news.

“It Shows that a nursing home can have fun and still live, too, just like anybody else,” said Activity Director Nancy Duerr, who organized the airmail balloon as part of National Nursing home week.

  1. What a wonderful story- thanks so much for posting!:) HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE SUMMER, AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL WITH ONLY MUCH HAPPINESS AND HEALTH ALWAYS- GOD IS GREAT ALWAYS!!!:):):):)

  2. As stewards of this planet, we must keep in mind that our actions can often adversely impact the environment. Is it truly worth releasing a balloon simply “to see where it may land”- when usually those balloons will end up in our waterways. Sea turtles and other marine life die on a daily basis. In order for us to truly “do good” we must first admit we are not the only important species on this planet. There are a million other species that suffer everyday from flippant choices made by humans. Would this practice of releasing balloons stop if you posted all of the news articles about animals whom have died from such things? Goodness isn’t just feeling good about selfish acts, but we seem to have lost that truth somewhere.
