The tax deadline for U.S. taxpayers this year is Monday, April 17th. Since April 15th (the normal deadline) falls on a Saturday, the IRS is giving you an extra two days to file your returns… good news for all of us procrastinators.

If you need more time, you will want to file for an extension. Click read more for easy instructions.

It is prudent for you to file your tax return by April 17th, or get an automatic extension of time to file, because the IRS penalty for failing to file is 5% per month. It takes 15 minutes to file for the automatic six months extension. Here’s how. But, pay what you owe now. The extension only grants extra time to file, not to pay… so send in a check for your estimated tax due by the 17th.
