Students of Acid Attack Forgive Their Assailant: “Mental illness is not a choice”

These girls may have been the victim of a crime, but they are insisting on showing kindness to their attacker, rather than bitterness.

Four Boston College students who have been studying abroad in France and Denmark were attacked by a 41-year-old woman with a mental illness this weekend when they were visiting Marseilles.

The woman threw a weak hydrochloric solution on the students in the city’s train station and though it was not a very strong solution, the acid got into the eyes of two of the students.

The woman reportedly sat down on the curb until police arrived on the scene and the students were rushed to the hospital.

None of the girls suffered any injuries, but two of them did take to Facebook after the incident and asked their friends and family to pray for their attacker.

One of the students, Courtney Siverling, wrote: “Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to see if I’m ok and/or has been praying for us. I did not receive any injuries from the attack in Marseille this morning and we are all safe.”

“I pray that the attacker would be healed from her mental illness in the name of Jesus and receive the forgiveness and salvation that can only come from Him.”

Michelle Krug wrote something similar, saying: “I ask that if you send thoughts and prayers our way, please consider thinking about/praying for our attacker so that she may receive the help she needs and deserves.”

“Mental illness is not a choice and should not be villainized.”

The women “have stated their intention to remain in Europe for their studies and have offered forgiveness to the woman who attacked them, an individual who police say suffers from mental illness,” Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn told the Associated Press.

Stranger Spends Hours Brilliantly Fixing a Destroyed Wedding Cake in Time for the Big Day

It might be a bride’s worst nightmare: on the eve of her wedding day, something goes wrong – like the carefully prepared hand-made wedding cake falling apart in the trunk of a car.

This is exactly what happened to Millie and Matt Maltby when they were on their way to their wedding venue in Brixham, England earlier this month.

The couple had driven to the Berry Head Hotel from Lincoln only to find that the beautiful 3-tiered cake that Millie had painstakingly prepared for the occasion had fallen to pieces in the trunk of the car.

“I had baked, secured, dowelled and decorated my own cake and we were quite cautious to drive carefully,” Millie wrote on Facebook. “However, when we arrived and opened the cake box it appeared that the hot weather caused the buttercream to melt and the cake just gave up.”

“I was a very calm bride and it didn’t seem to matter as I was marrying the man of my dreams and everything else seemed so insignificant. Matt, on the other hand, was heartbroken, he felt awful as I had taken so long to bake and decorate the cake and I had been taunting him about how yummy the cake was going to be.”

“I was sad to think that we wouldn’t have a cake – I’ve always been the crafty/baking type and I knew my family would be expecting to see something amazing. The hotel whisked away the cake and told me that they would figure something out for me. I pushed it to the back of my mind and tried to enjoy having all my family around me the night before my wedding day.”

RELATED4-Year-old Can’t Contain Emotions When He Hears Stepmom Give Special Message During Wedding Vows

As fate would have it, Clare Vaz of Patty’s Piece of Cake bakery was delivering cupcakes to the hotel at the same time that everyone was worrying over the damaged wedding cake.

Vaz then got to repairing the cake using the surviving segments of Millie’s original creation.

“With time against me, I just didn’t have time to bake cool and decorate a new middle tier, so thankfully, I had a dummy cake which I used to create the new middle tier,” Vaz wrote on Facebook. “The top tier (a delicious smelling lemon cake) thankfully I could save. So I stripped it back down, crumb-coated, and re-covered it in white.”

The next day, Vaz had the cake – which was an almost identical recreation of the original – back to the hotel in time for the wedding.

“I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting the bride and groom, I don’t even know their name other than Mille and Matt from the lovely cake topper,” says Vaz. “So Mrs. Mille and Mr. Matt… whilst cake plans sadly didn’t go in our favor, I am pleased to have hopefully saved the day with a cake that is not as perfect as your original, but will help make memories of your special day.”

“To take the time to do that for a stranger is just astounding, and something you just don’t see anymore,” says Millie. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank Clare enough.”

Be Humbled By the 9 Most Breathtaking Photos of Saturn’s Cassini Voyage

If you sometimes find yourself in the midst of everyday annoyances and frustrations from work, it can be helpful to take some time out your day for a humbling dose of ethereal wonder.

Which is why we compiled our ten favorite photos from the Cassini spacecraft’s 13-year voyage around Saturn.

The craft, which was launched in October 1997, took seven years to travel all the way to the ringed planet. It then transmitted priceless photos and information back to Earth with data that has been essential to space exploration and planetary studies.began its final mission around Saturn in April: the completion of 22 dives between the planet and its rings.

Cassini began its final mission around Saturn in April: the completion of 22 dives between the planet and its rings – an area never before explored.

CHECK OUT: Hubble Captures Giant Emoji in the Stars

Then, after it finished its final mission on September 15th, the spacecraft plunged into Saturn’s atmosphere and complete its breathtaking voyage in a blaze.

So, as evidence of its wondrous journey, here are the best photos from the Cassini spacecraft.

This 2,800-mile (4,000 kilometers) hurricane constantly spirals on Saturn’s north pole. Nobody knows why it is perpetually spinning year round, but this false-color image shows the details in its cloud range and motion.

This shadowy mosaic equinox is the first seasonal transition ever witnessed by Earth-dwellers, thanks to Cassini.

These three breathtaking mosaics were taken during flybys of Titan, a moon of Saturn that is covered in lakes of liquid methane. The photos tracked the changes on the planet’s surface between October 2005 and January 2006.

This photo was taken from the equatorial plane of Enceladus, one of Saturn’s many moons. It was snapped from the south pole 1 year after the moon’s autumnal equinox.

This is a rare view of five of Saturn’s moons in the same frame: Pandora, Janus, Enceladus, Rhea, and Mimas.

During its exploration of Enceladus, Saturn’s sixth-largest moon, Cassini captured this image of geysers spouting off of the moon’s surface. This has led researchers to believe that the moon may be harboring a sub-surface lake. If this is true, it could mean that Enceladus has all of the necessary ingredients for life.

This is a wider photo of the massive hurricane spinning at Saturn’s north pole.

Finally, this breathtaking photo shows the pale blue dot that is our home: Earth. Taken from roughly 900 million miles away (1.44 billion kilometers), it is yet another humbling reminder of our tiny place in the universe.

Garth Brooks Stops Show for Mom Holding Sign That Says ‘Today My Son Is Cancer-Free’

September 1 was a banner day for Gale and her six-year-old son—from morning to night good news swirled for the pair who had been dealing with cancer for a year.

A couple days earlier West Jet airlines had donated tickets for Gale’s husband and her sons so they could fly in to be with the rest of the family at the Alberta medical facility where Mason was being treated. The Ronald McDonald House Charities posted about the gifted plane tickets, along with a photo of the family, on Facebook.

Canadian Karyn Louise saw the post and reached out to the family to offer two tickets to a concert in Calgary on September 1st: “I’d like to treat you to a date night… I have two Garth Brooks tickets if you are a fan and can get away for a few hours on Friday night. I had planed on donating them to Ronald McDonald house and I would love for you to enjoy them.”

She didn’t think the day could get any happier, but then Garth Brooks stopped the show, engaged her with some questions, and then offered a beautiful gift on the spot.

Extreme Couponing is How a Texas Mom Can Give Extreme Relief to Hurricane Victims

Kimberly Gager is not just a single mother of three children – she is also using her shopping addiction to help hurricane evacuees.

Gager has donated over $8,000 worth of toiletries and hygienic supplies to dozens of relief efforts and families. The 39-year-old says that she used her extreme couponing skills to whittle the prices down on deodorant, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, baby wipes, diapers, and detergent to about $4,000.

Gager has reportedly been hoarding most of the supplies in her garage since October, but she has never had a real use for all of it. She would occasionally send boxes of supplies to universities and charities, but now, she is making supply deliveries to affected families in Texas and Florida from her home in San Antonio.

An Army veteran and government employee, Gager has been raising money for the supplies through her personal Paypal page – and she does not plan on stopping until she runs out of money.

“As long as the donations keep coming, I’ll keep buying,” Gager wrote on Facebook. “Target and Walgreens have been EXCEPTIONAL and very patient with me!”

Gager says that she plans on teaching a class on extreme couponing once she is less occupied with deliveries and hurricane relief.

Young Boy Saves 5 Lives in Just 2 Days

Steffan Williams may only be 8 years old, but he has already saved half a dozen lives in his hometown.

The Welsh youngster, who enjoys spending his days paddling along the coast of New Quay, Ceredigion, first spotted three people in distress from his kayak near the end of August.

Williams navigated over to the stranded tourists – an elderly woman and two teenagers – only to discover that they had hunkered down on a rock after being trapped out at sea by the tide.

RELATED12-Year-old Saves Friend’s Leg Using First-Aid From ‘Hunger Games’ Book

Williams then retrieved a dingy from the shore, returned to the tourists, and towed them back to safety. The trio was grateful for his help, and gave him a thank you tip of some cash.

Then, just two days later, the 8-year-old was kayaking along the coast once more when he saw two young men standing on a rock at sea, whistling for help and waving to get his attention.

Their phones had run out of battery power, and the two boys were cold, tired, hungry, and trapped on the rock without the ability to call for assistance.

This time, Williams alerted the coast guard, who used a rescue boat to pick up the boys from the rock.

MOREDog Chained Up During Flood Gets Adopted By The Man Who Saved Her

The shoreline is notoriously dangerous for tourists who use the beach as a shortcut to get to nearby campsites. Many of these visitors then become trapped by the rising tide. If it had not been for Williams’s assistance, five people may have faced a much more treacherous fate.

“People often get caught out by the tides in New Quay as they try to go backwards and forwards from the town to the caravan sites,” Steffan told Wales Online. “I just helped when I could.”

Williams father Huw, who also works in the coast guard, said that he was extremely proud of his son’s heroism. Steffan plans on working alongside his father on the coast when he turns 17.

Over a Quarter Million Dollars Donated to Help Victims of Western Wildfires

The Western states of Oregon, Washington, Montana, and California have been hit hard by devastating wildfires. With all these outbreaks, personnel and resources in the region are spread thin, but across the U.S. and Canada people have come together to raise more than a quarter million dollars to support the tireless, brave fire crews.

In Washington state, a fire started by lightning on August 11th began burning the Norse Peak Wilderness, and with a wind change, now threatens the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort area and the watershed for the City of Tacoma. The fire is currently 0% contained and spread over 1098 acres. A fundraiser started by Tiana Anderson, a Crystal Mountain employee who grew up in the area has raised $66,000 for The Greenwater and Crystal Mountain Firefighters Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which makes all donations tax-deductible.

“Thanks for all you have done to battle these fires and save our homes – and something we have had in the family since 1972,” wrote Kevin and Sheila Ober, who donated $150 two days ago. “Thank you doesn’t seem enough. You will forever be heroes to our family.”

On September 2nd, a wildfire started along the Eagle Creek Trail of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon. Currently, the Eagle Creek (Gorge) Fire has spread to 45,579 acres after having jumped across the Columbia River into Washington state. As of today, there are over 1000 personnel from across the Pacific Northwest working around the clock on the fire, which is viewed as just 32% contained.

Caroline Park and David Lipps, owners of Thunder Island Brewing Co, and residents of nearby Cascade Locks, started a fundraiser that will send any money raised directly to departments sending the fire crews—some of which are volunteer-based from their home town. She surpassed her goal, raising 18,000, but wants to hit $20K. Their Brewing Co. has also been feeding the busy fire crews. Donate to her campaign here.

A hiking group called Pacific Northwest Outdoor Women has raised almost $41,000 among their members and friends for the nonprofit Washington and Oregon volunteer firefighters associations, which have been sending crews to the various fires burning across the region. Donate to Oregon, here; visit heir Washington campaign here.

Brian Renkema started a GoFundMe campaign to help people in Northwest Montana who lost property and homes in the Caribou Creek fire. Also initiated by a lightening strike, the fire is burning 24,206 acres and is 50% contained today. 310 firefighters are currently fighting on the blaze’s perimeter, 18 miles northwest of Eureka. Favorable weather conditions should benefit the effort in the coming week. Donors, including nearby Canadians, have given $13,000 to Brian’s fundraiser, here.

GoFundMe reported in a press release three days ago that $83,000 was raised in response to California wildfires, but they could not be reached to provide the campaign details.

Regardless of the disaster—flooding in the south, or fires in the west—average citizens have lined up to volunteer their time, and give from their wallets—small gestures that together make a big difference.

This Country’s Millennials are Least Likely to Drink and Drive Than Any Other Age Group

Driving safely is now cool – at least, according to this new report on Canadian millennials.

The study, which was commissioned by Beer Canada’s Partners for Safer Communities initiative, says that British Columbian citizens between 18 and 35 years old are the least likely to drink and drive.

82% of millennials above the legal drinking age have volunteered as a designated driver at least once in the last three years, compared to 67% of Canadians between the ages of 34 and 54, and just 55% of those above 55 years of age.

Additionally, millennials may catch a lot of flack for using social media, but the study also highlighted the fact that many Canadian youngsters had been using social media to plan sober transportation for a night out. They also expressed concern about having to face social media shame in the case of being caught drinking and driving.

Almost half of the participating millennials said that social media and transportation apps help keep them safe while they’re drinking, as opposed to 21% of generations X’ers and 18% of baby boomers. 55% of millennials said that they have used transportation apps to get home, in comparison to 29% of the middle age group, and 17% of the baby boomers.

Dog Chained Up During Flood Gets Adopted By The Man Who Saved Her

The only thing that is now flooding around this poor Texan pup is tender love and care.

The dog was discovered by Sheriff Troy Nehls and a news crew from KPRC in Fort Bend County in heavy flooding last year. The dog was so overcome by the waters, only her head could be seen poking out above the surface.

When Nehls and the journalists approached the distressed animal, they realized that the dog was unable to swim away because it was tied to the porch.

Nehls and one of the journalists then plunged into the water, untied the dog’s leash, and hauled her into the rescue boat.

After taking the pup to the Humane Society where she was evaluated and deemed healthy, journalists reached out to the former owner of the dog who had skipped town for the hurricane. The man said that he did not believe the floodwaters would be high enough to harm the hound. He was allegedly unable to return to the home because of the flooding, but he was more than happy to relinquish ownership of the dog to the sheriff.

The Nehls family then agreed to adopt the dog and give her a loving forever home.

Hearing about the foster kids’ dilemma, Bell and his wife Jennifer immediately opened their doors to the children.

The Majestic Long-Endangered Snow Leopard is Not Endangered Anymore

After decades of being listed as endangered, the status of the majestic snow leopard has finally been upgraded to “vulnerable”.

The reclassification was announced this week by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) after a 3-year survey showed great improvements in their population.

Thanks to improved tracking techniques, such as camera traps and satellite imagery, conservations can now follow the animal’s movements and patterns across Asia. The most recent study estimated that there were between 4,000 and 10,000 mature snow leopards in the wild today.

CHECK OUT: India Saves Its Tigers Instead of Mining For $330M in Diamonds

In order to be listed as endangered, the species must have less than 2,500 mature adults in the wild and their numbers must be in steep decline.

While the reclassification is cause for celebration, conservationists are still keeping a close eye on the population. Researchers currently believe that the recorded amount of snow leopard deaths have been due to farmers protecting livestock, but because of how difficult it is to get exact population counts, they remain wary of poaching dangers.

How to Raise Your Kids to Have Self-Esteem – 8 Tips and Tricks

It is vitally important that parents instill a positive sense of self in their children. If the youngsters develop appropriate self-esteem, they will have the capacity to grow into well-adjusted adults.

These positive feelings of self-confidence and self-acceptance enable them to undertake new challenges—and fail and try again. Any successes give them pride, and encourages them to do their best so they can feel good all over again.

Children with low self-esteem are insecure and lack self-confidence. They end up being confused and unsure of themselves. Low self-esteem blocks success, as your children are unwilling to interact with others for fear of rejection. They do not have the guts to stand up for themselves and generally avoid challenges. When they are setback by mistakes, it may be difficult for them to make a comeback. It will eventually lead to stress, which leads to health issues.

Building Your Child’s Self-Esteem

Every child is wonderful and special. However, self-esteem does not develop by constantly telling them this fact. Also, persistently rewarding them does not build their self-esteem. They develop self-esteem from their own failures and successes. This is why smart parenting can make them develop the confidence to tackle the challenges of everyday life.

WATCH4-Year-old Can’t Contain Emotions When He Hears Stepmom Give Special Message During Wedding Vows

8 Tips to Reach Your Goal:

Give your kids choices: It is important that you allow your children to make their own choices. However, these choices must be within a set of options that you set yourself. For instance, giving them the choice of which food to eat for breakfast. This empowers your kids, as they are capable of making simple choices at a young age. As they grow up, they will be capable of making more difficult choices.

Give them responsibilities: Provide your children with responsibilities around the home at a young age. with chores like taking care of the family pet, clearing the dinner table, or picking up their toys. Their problem solving skills will improve and they’ll feel more competent. These chores should not be too much for their age, that they feel overworked.

Spend personal time with your kids: You should spend time with your child by taking walks, teaching them to ride a bike, or enjoying food together. The bond between you will cement your parent-child relationship and give them confidence that you will back them up if they fail.

Show them no one is perfect: When your child makes a mistake or disappoints you, your reaction is critical to how they will feel about themselves in the future. Over-reaction does not inspire self-confidence. Explain to them that no one expects them to be perfect, and give examples of when you were not.

Allow them to learn from their mistakes: Do not do things they can do themselves, or answer questions that they can figure out for themselves. Give your children the space to try it for themselves. This helps them develop new skills and avoid over-dependence on you. You will, however, need to be patient as they try to do it on their own. They will develop more confidence and competence as they successfully handle things in front of them.

POPULARFamily Has Adopted 88 Special Needs Kids in the Past Four Decades

Only offer sincere praise: Do not praise your child too much. Believe it or not, it is easy for kids to discern when you are only giving them lip service, when it comes to compliments. Praise them when it is necessary and be specific with your compliments. Instead of, “You’re so smart,” you can say, “I like the way you figured that out all by yourself.” Instead of looking at scribbled artwork and saying,  “That’s so beautiful,” describe what you like or want them to develop. Say, “I love your choice of colors and how you used all the space on the paper.”

Show your children respect: Calling your children names and using sarcasm to drive a point home is a major contributor in making children less confident. Do not demean the feelings of your child. Take your time before making a response and choose your words wisely when speaking to them. Clearly show your child their mistake and correct them without belittling them.

Show them their uniqueness: It is important that you show your children their individuality. Do not try to make a comparison between them and other people. Appreciate their special talents and personality.

Try to nurture their self-confidence naturally, but remember that developing a child’s confidence is a process that takes time. Be respectful, show your kids acceptance, encourage communication, and, above all, be their role model of a confident person.

Bank Wants to Help Customers Affected by Hurricane, Waives 3 Big Fees in Florida

Hurricane Irma has impacted almost everyone in Florida, transplanting many from their homes and disrupting their lives. Something as simple as not having a bank branch nearby with which to do business could lead to late fees, surcharges from non-associated ATMs, etc.

One bank is doing their part by easing that bit of worry for its customers.

Stearns Bank had to close its branches in the cities of Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and Venice on Friday, and announced the last of those effected offices will reopen today.

The second grade student has been selling lemonade in order to pay off the school lunch debt of the Coeur d’Alene Public School district.

Her “Lemonade 4 Lunch” stand initially raised about $40 last weekend, which was enough to pare down the debt at three local schools. Then, she set her sights on a much bigger goal: $23,000.

By starting a GoFundMe campaign with her mom, the 6-year-old will be using her lemonade stand and the crowdfunding initiative to raise enough money to cover lunch debts throughout the district.

Amiah, who attends Hayden Meadows Elementary School, says that she first became inspired to raise money for the cause after she read a story about John Lew: a Seattle dad who raised over $50,000 for his state’s lunch debt.

While Amiah may be a lot younger than Lew, her path will make a big difference for other students.

Over $60K Raised for Vendor After Video Shows Police Seizing His Money

A Twitter video of a college police officer seizing a street vendor’s personal money may have stirred online controversy, but it has also spurred a community to action.

A hot dog vendor who has asked to only be identified as “Beto” was managing a food cart near the Memorial Stadium for the first home football game of the season on the University of California Berkeley campus when he was approached by a police officer.

Upon discovering that Beto did not have a permit to sell food, the officer wrote him a citation and took all the money out of his wallet as evidence.

Martin Flores, who had been attending the game with his family when he went to go buy some hot dogs, began to film the exchange in protest.

Flores can be heard in the video saying: “You’re gonna take his money away? That’s not right. People can drink on campus for football games and no ticket, but a hard-working man selling hot dogs and earning a living gets his money taken away?”

Beto later told sources that he has a job in construction during the day, but he wanted to sell hot dogs on Saturday as a means of making a little extra money. In total, the officer seized $60 from his wallet.

UC Berkeley officers are responsible for investigating illegal street vending, but representatives say that they are instructed to issue a warning before a citation. Three other street vendors were allegedly detained earlier that day, but they had only been given warnings.

After the video of the police officer went viral, however, Flores created a GoFundMe campaign that has already raised over $68,000 for Beto.

An investigation of the incident is currently underway.

“I’m very grateful for the support I’ve received,” Beto told NBC News. “I was simply working to support my family … I’m very thankful, now that I see everyone supporting me.”

When Hurricane Irma Raged Outside, Cop Offered His Hand to Frightened Senior For a Dance

Despite floodwaters raging outside, this police officer was moved inside to take a frightened senior “Beyond the Sea”.

Deputy Froelich was stationed at a hurricane shelter in Florida on Saturday to watch over dozens of other families and state residents seeking refuge from the storm.

One of the evacuees in particular caught Froelich’s eye: a frightened-looking elderly woman who was sitting by herself in the corner.

When the deputy asked if there was anything he could do to cheer her up, she simply responded with “a dance”.

Froelich took her hand and danced with her as he sang “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin, until she eventually cracked a smile.

Watch Rescuers Scale Cliff to Save Crying 1-Day-old Seal

When this 1-day-old baby seal was abandoned by her mother on a beach, these rescuers stopped at nothing to rescue her.

A pedestrian first spotted Morwenna the seal crying by herself on a beach in Cornwall, England. The concerned civilian then notified volunteers from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and several other conservation groups.

After monitoring the youngster from afar in order to make sure that her mother was not returning with food, the volunteers prepared for rescue.

Two used ropes and rappelled down to the beach and wrapped the seal in a towel and a “seal rescue bag”.

They then climbed back up and brought the baby to a facility where she was evaluated and declared healthy by wildlife specialists. The nursery staff named her Morwenna after a character from the BBC series Poldark.

“She is being fed every four hours and the team are just starting to introduce her to fish soup, to ensure she is gaining weight correctly,” Tamara Cooper, curator of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, told Cornwall Live. “She will be looked after in our indoor hospital for a few weeks but as soon as she is feeding for herself she will move to the outdoor nursery pools.”
