Katy Perry Helps Teachers With Supplies

Katy_Perry_Staples-ad

In the two months since Katy Perry and the office supply company, Staples, joined forces to help teachers, money has been donated to fund 287 classroom projects to benefit 23,679 students heading back to American schools this fall.

Staples ignited the effort with a $1 million donation to the DonorsChoose.org charity that has helped fund more than 450,000 classroom projects for teachers nationwide.

A new video debuted this week starring Perry encouraging others to donate to the campaign, “Make Roar Happen,” for teachers. (See the video below)

Most teachers spend an average of $408.71 of their own money each year to provide supplies and materials for their classrooms.

You can help fund classroom projects in your own local community by donating $1, or more, at DonorsChoose.org or at your local Staples store (or online at www.staples.com/makeroarhappen). Donations will be used where the donation was made. Customers who spend $10 or more at any Staples store will receive a unique code good for a chance to win two tickets to a Katy Perry concert. Enter the code online until Sept. 25 at MakeRoarHappen.

Win A Trip to Meet Katy Perry

For those individuals that create a video ‘roaring’ about their teachers, education inspirations or school, they could win a trip to L.A. to meet Katy and attend her concert on September 19. Upload your ‘Roar’ video (you must be 18 years or older) before the end of Sept. 3. Use a hashtag when sharing them: #MakeRoarHappen

“I’m glad to partner with Staples on my Prismatic World Tour to raise awareness and funds for DonorsChoose.org, and to remind my fans that a small gesture can make a large impact on the very basic materials classrooms need for teachers to help students reach their full potential,” said Katy Perry.

Life might turn into “The Golden Girls” for some of the thousands of aging Americans taking part in home-sharing programs around the country that allow seniors to stay in their homes and save money while getting some much-needed companionship.

“It’s a wonderful arrangement,” said the white-haired Rosenfeld, who when asked her age will only say she’s a senior citizen. “The way the rents are these days, I couldn’t stay here without it.”

Love For the Elderly: Teen Boy Sends Letters to Seniors

love-for-the-elderly-note-card-graphic-640px

13-year old Jacob Cramer wants to cheer up lonely elderly people and he’s chosen an old-fashioned way of doing it. He is writing letters.

Since July 2013, Jacob has recruited friends, and even organizations, to help compose personal letters for delivery to senior centers. So far, strangers have reached out in friendship from all over the world; some close to the Cleveland suburbs where the effort began and some as far away as Europe and Asia.

The enthusiastic response for his nonprofit group, Love For The Elderly, inspired him to launch a website and social media campaign to spur more letter writing.

”So many elderly citizens in our nation have no one to care for them, no one to look after them, no one to love them,” says Jacob. “We are here to change that.”

To help out, you can send a letter or card to the postal address below. They also have an online submission form. (Use this when writing from another country.) If mailing your own personal card or letter, please make your handwriting legible so the seniors can read it. Typing is a good option too.

84-year-old Dolores “Dolly” Jefferson was getting a cup of coffee, when she heard a “commotion” in her backyard, the Illinois Daily Herald reported. When she looked outside she saw a one-hundred-pound coyote nose to nose with her neighbor’s small dog, Roxie. Soon there were five coyotes in the yard.

With the wild animals poised to pounce, the octogenarian sprung into action.

“I ran outside screaming as loud as I could and shooed the coyotes away.”

Why People in Louisiana Are So Happy (and How You Can Be Too)

party-happy-friends-flickr-CC-SARCASTICALIOUS

If you’re happy and you know it, you probably live in Louisiana. At least that’s what “Unhappy Cities,” a paper recently released by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research, indicates.

Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Houma landed on the list of top 10 U.S. metropolitan areas with the highest reported happiness. No other state claimed more than one spot.

What are they drinking down there?

“It’s sort of a cliche but Louisiana is a place where people love to have a good time,” says one New Orleans resident.

“As wind farms march out into coastal waters to meet energy demands, seals are learning to use them like local grocery stores, according to scientists who have been tracking their movements,” says an article in the LA Times.

“These wily individuals have been spotted prowling the grids of turbines, checking for fish congregating around individual pillars and stopping to feast when they find them.”

For Every Bottle, This Recycling Machine Dispenses Dog Food for Strays

dog-food-recycling-dispenser

In Istanbul, Turkey, where thousands of stray dogs live on the city streets, a new vending machine aims to dispense foods for these animals while making a dent in the recycling problem at the same time.

Earlier this month the Turkish design company, Pugedon, unveiled the dog-friendly device on an urban sidewalk hoping to increase the recycling of plastic bottles, saving them from the landfill.

Pedestrians can empty their bottles into the machine, which can filter and dispense the water for the local dogs. Each time a plastic bottle is pushed through an opening in the front, a fixed amount of dog food trickles out at the bottom, next to the water.

The company says the dog food costs are covered by the plastic that is recovered.

Porthcawl residents have honored the sacrifice of the soldiers who died fighting for their country in World War I by getting thousands of Flanders poppies planted on the town’s roundabouts.

The poppies are blooming in the Welsh seaside town as it prepares to mark the centenary of the start of World War I.

The flaming red Flanders poppies are an internationally recognized symbol of remembrance because they bloomed on the battlefields of Belgium and France during the 1914-18 war.

Study Shows Overdosing on Bad News Can Fuel Daily Stress

no-doom-no-gloom-button

no-doom-no-gloom-buttonIf you’re feeling stressed these days, the news media may be partly to blame, suggests a national survey conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health.

The survey of more than 2,500 Americans found that about 1 in 4 said they had experienced a “great deal” of stress in the previous month. And these stressed-out people said one of the biggest contributors to their day-to-day stress was watching, reading or listening to the news.

A news tip called into KATU-TV in Portland, Oregon brought to light a story of kindness and generosity by a local police officer.

Officer Carlos Ibarra says he deals with a lot of homeless people who could use help, but usually it is just a husband and wife and a kid or two at the most. This dad and seven kids were living in a van.

When none of the local shelters answered their phones on the weekend, he put them up in a hotel and paid the $70 fee from his own pocket. He went and got them a box of food too.

A 5-year-old Massachusetts boy battling cancer said all he wants for his upcoming birthday is a box of birthday cards.

Danny Nickerson, of Foxboro, Massachusetts, will turn six on July 25. He was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor this past October — one of the most chemotherapy-resistant cancers.

Dog Walks 4 Miles Every Night To Feed Hungry Friends

junkyard-Dog-hug-in-Brazil

Lilica was abandoned at a junkyard in San Carlos, Brazil. Instead of becoming heartless and homeless, the dog became beloved by the resident woman and her children, who responded to Lilica’s positive attitude, and willingness to risk her life for other animals.

After she bore eight pups (which were later adopted), Lilica began to search for food at night, walking four miles each way. She found a caring, compassionate school teacher who became accustomed to feeding the dog every night outside her home.

The woman, who feels she has made a special pact with the dog, always ties up the bag of food after Lilica is finished, so she can carry the food back across busy roads, to provide for the other animals in the poor neighborhood.
