Unique Way to Help Hurricane Victims Suffering from Flooding “Worse Than Katrina”

Hurricane Isaac - By Captain Kimo, Flickr - CC

Hurricane Isaac Flickr-Captain Kimo-ccAs expected, Hurricane Isaac is now wreaking havoc along the Gulf Coast — and New Orleans in particular — with storm surges flooding coastal communities under ten feet of water and displacing thousands of people. For some inland neighborhoods, the flooding is already worse than experienced during Katrina, which struck exactly seven years ago, and rain is expected to continue for many hours.

Unless you live in the Bayou, you’re probably just watching video of the hurricane damage on TV and feeling badly for the people who live there.

Of course, there are the usual ways to pitch in. You could text $10 to aid relief efforts (Text REDCROSS to 90999), you can donate clothes and shoes or even give blood. But there is another option most people haven’t considered.

You can donate airline miles.

That’s right. The Red Cross can receive frequent flyer miles from Delta, United, and US Airways.

Why give away your precious miles?

Because the Red Cross often needs planes to deliver supplies or carry people and pets from disaster zones.

How to donate:

United and US Air ask for a minimum donation of 500 and 1,000 miles respectively. Delta lets you choose any amount you want. Just make sure you list ‘Red Cross’ as the recipient whenever prompted.

Karen Klein Foundation teeshirt-joyAfter receiving more than $700,000 in donations following the release of a viral video of her being viciously taunted by a group of middle school students, Karen Klein has done something positive with the money, which totaled more than enough to pay for a needed vacation.

“My story inspired more than 32,000 people to engage in their own act of love by donating to a fundraising campaign,” wrote Klein, who is now retired from the school system in Greece, New York.

“Now it is time for me to give back and to turn your single act of kindness into my own personal movement to stop bullying in America.”

15 Year logo

“Can’t they all just get along?” was the cry going out from a chartered yacht on Sept. 9, 2012, sailing up the Potomac River alongside the former swamp that is Washington, DC.

Believing that optimism and civility are in short supply amidst the barrage of negativity in the media these days, the people on the boat are bringing some Good News to Washington.

Already, every US Senator’s office has been sent a free Good News Subscription to kick off the 15-year Anniversary of the Good News Network, launched by a mom of three in Manassas, Virginia at her lake-front home in 1997.

“Why not read all the good news headlines from around the world every morning?” says Geri Weis-Corbley, the company’s founder and president who has chartered an 85-foot yacht to try to make waves in Washington. “I want every Congressional Representative and Senator to start the day with a hopeful dose of news showing the successes and the heroes.”

Yacht small dockedThe Good News Network is #1 on Google with its motto, “If it’s Good Deeds, It Leads”. Readers say the website rescues them from falling into depression during hard times.

Fans of the website were invited to ride along on the two-hour Potomac cruise. On board, we celebrated some folks who, in their own ways, broadcast a positive perspective.
