An 82-year-old veteran from Cary, N.C. traveling through O’hare Airport had no idea he was about to fall, literally, into a life-threatening situation involving his luggage and an escalator. A traveling salesman who happened to be in the right place at the right time potentially saved his life with a product designed to stop severe bleeding.

A few weeks ago, Albert Cinquepalma was trying to make a connection at the airport in Chicago when his bag got caught on an escalator, causing him to fall backward. The escalator ripped the skin from much of his arm as he was dragged along for several minutes. Two men nearby pulled him off the escalator, but the injuries to his arm were severe and he was losing blood quickly.

An emergency care team would take 20 minutes to arrive and the first aid kit in the airport had nothing to stop the bleeding. Coincidentally, a man named Ted Russell was also at O’Hare that day.

Pink-footed geese appear to be avoiding new offshore wind farms when migrating back to the UK, a study has suggested.

By monitoring the movement of the birds over four years, researchers were able to detect changes in flight patterns around two newly erected wind farms, suggesting that the species can identify the threat and avoid the rotating blades.

The 9-year-old son of a rock guitarist from the band Great White who died in the 2003 nightclub fire that killed 100 has dedicated his life to bringing toys and smiles to sick children in the hospital.

Acey Longley’s charity is driven by donations of percussion instruments and iTunes gift cards he receives from rock stars from KISS and other bands, as well as regular folks. It’s called B.E.A.T.S. (Bringing Everyone A Tremendous Smile).

A user of the popular website, Reddit, posted that she received a special birthday surprise from her pizza deliveryman after ordering the food online.

“On my pizza delivery order, I wrote “It’s my birthday, surprise me” in the special accommodations section. The driver went to the CVS and bought me a birthday card, then put a dollar in it and taped it to the pizza box with a letter.”

He wrote on the card: “Have a good birthday. I know we just met but it feels like forever (ha ha),” and he signed it, “From Gabe, the Delivery Driver.”

She took possession of the newly-built one-bedroom flat and related document from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at a grand opening celebration. He said 50,000 houses will be built in 28 cities of the state. Altogether, 192 beneficiaries were allotted houses this weekend on the outskirts of the state capital.

Track star Liu Xiang of China, who won a gold medal in the 2004 Olympics, but fell during his race in London Tuesday, was hailed for his spirit.

Despite his injury, he hopped on one foot around each hurdle to the finish line.

After he stopped to kiss the last hurdle, a competitor from Hungary grabbed his hand and flung his arm in the air like a champion.

After accidentally flushing them down the toilet, a sewer crew went out of their way to help a Colorado woman recover a pair of valuable diamond rings that were an 18th birthday gift from her late father.

Worth $10,000 and seemingly lost, the rings were miraculously located downstream in the sewer system.

This is 19-year-old Schoep being cradled in his father’s arms in the warm waters of Lake Superior. The arthritic dog falls asleep every night after he is carried into the lake where the buoyancy of the water soothes his aching body.

The man’s friend is professional photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson who took this photo during one of their therapeutic evening swims. She posted it on Facebook and it went wildly viral, with thousands of people sharing it and 28,294 comments (and counting).

“I was so happy I got to capture this moment for John,” says the Bayfield, Wis., photographer. “I have known them, for six years, and seen Schoep age.”
