“The Landis mayor’s race is tied. Again.

And with two provisional ballots to be counted in today’s official canvass, the winner could come down to the toss of a coin.”

Today is America Recycles Day

Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 for America Recycles Day — the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the U.S.

Now it’s easier to figure out what items can be recycled and what can’t by using a database searchable by locality here at Earth911.com.

Other websites help citizens navigate the tangle of recycling opportunities and identify the difference between corrugated cardboard and common food cartons, hazardous waste and disposable waste.

Check out the Recyclo-pedia that lists facts about how to recycle batteries, electronics and medicines.

What can be accomplished when we all work together? Here are some Fun Facts:

  • The EPA has concluded that recycling efforts reduced the country’s carbon emissions by a net 49 million metric tonnes in 2005.
  • In the United Kingdom, the Waste and Resources Action Programme stated that Great Britain’s recycling efforts reduce CO2 emissions by 10-15 million tonnes a year.
  • The Energy Information Administration estimates that “a paper mill uses 40 percent less energy to make paper from recycled paper than it does to make paper from fresh lumber.”
  • Recycling aluminum cans saves 95 percent of the energy required to make the same amount of aluminum from its virgin source, bauxite. (EPA)
  • In 2009 more than half of all aluminum cans produced came from recycled aluminum.
  • People who had friends and neighbors that recycled were much more likely to also recycle than those who didn’t have friends and neighbors recycling.

Boy saves Christmas - CBS video screenshotChristmas is weeks away but one little boy is planning to play Santa for a family he doesn’t even know.

The 7-year-old boy in Carrollton, Georgia heard his parents discussing a local family who had lost everything in a house fire. They had no renter’s insurance and have been living in a motel room — all five of them — losing hope by the day.

That’s when they learned of young Bradley Thomas’s efforts to give them a Christmas, and hope is returning.

The Plea that Opened Hearts; Inner-city School Teacher Takes Action

black-boy-jumping“The school year had barely begun at Admiral Seymour elementary when teacher Carrie Gelson, frustrated after a difficult day at work, wrote an impassioned open letter to Vancouver residents asking if anyone cared about her inner-city students who were coming to school with empty tummies and holes in their shoes.

“The response was astonishing. Just minutes after her plea was published in The Vancouver Sun, donations and offers of help began to arrive at the school, turning into a flood of generosity that continues to this day.”

It was then announced that the winning bidder was giving the guitar to one of the uniformed servicemen at the show, Andrew Kinard, who lost his legs in Iraq and spoke movingly onstage earlier in the evening.

Haunted by Past, Kazakhstan Shuns Nuclear Bomb

Nagasaki mushroom cloud

Nagasaki mushroom cloudSitting atop the second largest uranium reserves in the world, Kazakhstan has not followed in the former Soviet Union’s footsteps toward military power.

Instead, it is at the forefront of the global movement for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Where test explosions once shook the earth, scientists are now researching peaceful applications for atomic energy.

“Our country decided that the might of our new state would be determined not by our nuclear muscle, but by our total rejection of it,” Nursultan Nazarbayev, who remains president two decades later, said in a recent speech.

The number of nuclear tests worldwide has fallen dramatically in the last decade, during which only North Korea has broken a de facto worldwide moratorium.
