Photo by Sun StarSome persistent dolphins are being credited with saving a dog that had run away in Florida. The dog’s owner said he had been missing for 15 hours — and it would have been longer if the dolphins hadn’t alerted the neighbors.

“If he had to tread water all night long, I know he wouldn’t have been able to,” Cindy Burnett said from her home on Marco Island.

PepsiCo’s Deal With Mexican Farmers Is Good for All

News21 photo, Mexican borderPepsiCo’s work with corn farmers in Jalisco, Mexico, reflects a new approach by corporations trying to maintain a business edge while helping out small communities.

In just three years, everything has changed for 300 small farmers who no longer sell their corn to middlemen but directly to PepsiCo, which guarantees the price it will pay for their crops upfront. The deal enables the small farmers to secure credit to buy seeds and fertilizers, crop insurance and equipment.

Heinz Ketchup Goes Green With Coca-Cola’s Plant-Based Bottle

heinz ketchup bottleHeinz’s ketchup bottles haven’t changed at all since plastic was first used for the iconic containers in 1983. Now the bottles are set to get a green makeover, courtesy of Coca-Cola.

The ketchup manufacturer announced a partnership this week to use Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle, a plastic bottle made from a combination of petroleum-based materials and up to 30% plant-based materials, for its ketchup bottles.

In the last few days, they’ve sold thousands of dollars of pizza to out-of-state supporters in 14 countries, and every state.

On Saturday alone, Ian’s gave away 1,057 free slices in their store and delivered more than 300 pizzas to the Capitol itself.

Toys R Us Launches “Be A Hero For Autism” Fundraising Campaign

Toys R Us Autism campaign bannerToys”R”Us yesterday announced the launch of its nine-week in-store fundraising campaign to benefit Autism Speaks, North America’s largest autism science and advocacy organization.The company will collect donations in its stores and online through April 30 and provide a $400,000 grant to kick off its fifth annual campaign.

Since the partnership began in 2007, Toys”R”Us and customer contributions have combined to provide Autism Speaks with more than $8.4 million. Last year’s in-store and online fundraising campaign raised nearly $1.8 million for Autism Speaks in the U.S. and an additional $600,000 in Canada.

The study found that, of the 59 people who participated in the study, the half that spent an average of 40.7 minutes daily playing the games had a 57% reduction in their depression symptoms.

After three days without a call, a pizza driver, Susan Guy, jumped in her car to go see what was the matter. She called 911 when she found the house silent. It turns out the elderly woman had fallen and was trapped on the floor.

Hopefulness among African Americans is evident in many ways: 85 percent of African Americans are optimistic about the future, 62 percent say their personal finances will improve over the next year, 59 percent think America’s best years are yet to come and 32 percent say the economy is already recovering (a relatively low figure, but well above what whites and Hispanics say about the trajectory of the economy).
