doggie airlift-Wings of Rescue-400pxOne day. 500 animals. 14 private planes. 120 rescue organizations. 100’s of volunteers. 30,000 air miles. 11 destinations. And many, many happy tails.

Today is the big day for Wings of Rescue, the non-profit that is making holiday dreams come true for hundreds of dogs in high kill shelters, bringing them to live in new “fur-ever” homes.

Funded by Subaru of America, Wings of Rescue will conduct its 3rd Annual Holiday Airlift, saving dogs in Southern California – many literally on the day they are to be euthanized. A fleet of volunteer pilots in private planes will fly these bundles of love to rescue organizations and new homes in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, in the largest one-day animal rescue on the West Coast.

5600 animals have been given homes in the last three and a half years, thanks to the 501c3, Wings of Rescue, which orchestrates and coordinates with more than 120 rescue and shelter organizations up and down the West Coast and Canada. START Rescue is also one of the participating groups, doing excellent work in Oregon.

Today, planes will take off from California and land in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, with all dogs flying in pressurized cabins, not as cargo.

The transport is made possible by grant funding from the ASCPA. The ASCPA is granting a total of $100,000 to animal welfare organizations across the country, provided by the Subaru of America “Share the Love” event which runs from Nov. 21, 2013 to Jan 2, 2014.  During this time Subaru will donate $250 of every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased to the customer’s choice of participating charities including the ASCPA. The donation from Subaru of America will help fund the safe transport of sheltered dogs from localities where supply exceeds demand to areas where demand matches the supply of adoptable dogs.

  1. For some reason, the article has missed out http://www.Startrescue.org
The were a major organizer in this fantastic venture. They try to do at least one transport of death row dogs every month up to Oregon, they were the group that took on Indy the little dog that had fireworks strapped to him last July, they are an absolute brilliant group, and do an awful lot on very little money, all of them are absolutely dedicated to to work and basically do it for no money, just their love of dogs, brilliant !
