18 years ago today, Iceland enshrined the area surrounding Vatnajökull glacier as a national park, the second-largest in all of Europe behind Yugyd Va in Russia. The Vatnajökull glacier is the largest in Europe outside the Arctic, but the national park includes two areas that were previously protected called Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur.
