He rushed to save her from the frigid water. But he fell in himself. Tony held onto his sister and treaded water with one hand until their father rushed out and was able to pull Tony, still clutching Sammy, to safety.

community gives back to soldier-TV9videoIn the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, many Connecticut residents continue to struggle to recover their livelihoods and to provide nutritious food, safe shelter, transportation, clothing, and medical supplies for their families.

A philanthropic family from Northwest Connecticut, who wishes to remain anonymous, has stepped in to help. The family has notified the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut that it is providing $50,000 to assist individuals and families still struggling to recover from the storm. And, they might give more, if needed.

“The Local Area Fund is a great example of the positive impact of local philanthropy,” said Guy Rovezzi, President of The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut. “Many nonprofits supporting our community could not exist without the generosity of Litchfield county fundholders and donors like those who established the Local Area Fund.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut serves Litchfield County with a collection of more than 250 funds from local donors. These funds support nonprofit organizations and provide scholarships to area students throughout Northwest Connecticut.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped from the opening bell, climbing as much as 158 points early and closing at 14,253.77.

The gains represent a remarkable comeback for the stock market. The Dow has more than doubled since falling to a low of 6,547 in March 2009 following the financial crisis and the onset of the Great Recession.

“I want to read one book,” he says. “I don’t care if it’s about Mickey Mouse. I want to read one book before I die.”

Recently, he got to do just that — a moral takeaway for anyone who thinks they’re too old to do something.
