The economic outlook for developing countries is positive for the first time since the early 1970s, driven in large part by the growth in China and India, according to an annual report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development released Monday.
Developing countries — including many of the world’s poorest nations — will see ongoing benefits from increasing trade, a positive trend since 2003 that has allowed such countries globally to bolster investment in their economies, said the report.
Per capita gross domestic product has increased nearly 30 percent between 2003 and 2007, compared to 10 percent for the Group of Seven (G-7) highly industrialized countries, the report noted. Overall, the world economy will mark growth for a fifth consecutive year, with a 3.4 percent expansion this year.
