Last month, the American Academy of Pediatrics asked the federal government to redo the Toxic Substances Control Act to ensure that chemicals in consumer products marketed to American consumers are safe.

Hollywood actress Jessica Alba added her celebrity heft to the cause, joining leading public health experts this week to ask key members of Congress to co-sponsor the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (S. 847), recently introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ).

Having been inspired in her role as a new mom, Alba said, “Like many other moms out there, I try to buy safe products for my family, but that can’t be the only solution.”

Tunisia and Egypt will be offered more than $20 billion in international loans over the next two years if they continue their transformation into “democratic and tolerant societies”, the leaders of the world’s richest countries announced on Friday.

In a gesture of western solidarity, Tunisia and Egypt were invited to the Group of Eight summit in Deauville, where a drafted communiqué created a new role in north Africa for the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, which helped to rebuild former Soviet bloc countries over the last 20 years.

Yet efforts by the Tihar Jail complex in New Delhi to transform the lives of its inmates and prepare them for a fresh start through vocational training in diverse fields has created the successful TJ’S brand of goods.

More suburban downtowns are burdened with empty storefronts, but a growing number of Chicago area communities are encouraging artists to dress up the vacant buildings’ windows with “art under glass”.

“We’re trying to transform these storefronts into something positive,” said Pam Hamilton, a graphic designer and artist who is leading a project to use the inside of an empty storefront in south suburban Romeoville to display public art, starting in June.

The team came together for the first time in Haiti, following the earthquake 15 months ago. Now the disasters are hitting closer to home and the former snipers and medics are first in line to help, relieving not only the stresses of others, but their own.

“If we can get solar at 15 cents a kilowatt-hour or lower, which I’m hopeful that we will do, you’re going to have a lot of people that are going to want to have solar at home.”

For 10 years, Kirti Dwivedi watched her mother suffer from kidney disease. When she reached out for help via social media, she said, “I never thought that we would be able to find somebody that would be willing to be a donor, let alone a match.”

Thanks to her daughter’s plea for a donor on Twitter, Kirti not only has a new kidney, but a new life too.

Readers of the Good News Network have followed this inspiring story from the beginning, when the first Panera Bread experimental cafe offered people hard-hit by economics a good and healthy meal.

Now, after the third donations-only restaurant proved itself a success, the verdict is in: People are good and willing to pay their fair share to help others.

The cafes allow people to pay as much or little as they can afford. The program, “Panera Cares,” is an example of a “community kitchen,” in which for-profit companies act in part like nonprofits.
