Adam Braun was on a fast track toward a lucrative corporate career, but it was a backpacking trip as a teenager in India when he met a little boy begging on the streets, that changed his stars.
Adam asked him, “What do you want most in the world?”
The boy’s reply: “A pencil.”
That moment became the spark for Pencils of Promise, an organization founded by Braun that builds schools in some of the world’s poorest countries—Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
Two years later, 21 schools have been built. Thirty will be up and running by the end of 2011.

A homeless man in southeast Michigan says a woman accidentally gave him a gold ring laced with diamonds when she handed him a handful of change, and now he is looking for the owner.
Michael Secaur tells The Oakland Press that he was panhandling at an intersection in Pontiac on Monday when a woman pulled up in a vehicle and handed him some money. He says the ring was among some coins, and that he thinks she “did an oops.”

PepsiCo’s work with corn farmers in Jalisco, Mexico, reflects a new approach by corporations trying to maintain a business edge while helping out small communities.
In just three years, everything has changed for 300 small farmers who no longer sell their corn to middlemen but directly to PepsiCo, which guarantees the price it will pay for their crops upfront. The deal enables the small farmers to secure credit to buy seeds and fertilizers, crop insurance and equipment.

Heinz’s ketchup bottles haven’t changed at all since plastic was first used for the iconic containers in 1983. Now the bottles are set to get a green makeover, courtesy of Coca-Cola.
The ketchup manufacturer announced a partnership this week to use Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle, a plastic bottle made from a combination of petroleum-based materials and up to 30% plant-based materials, for its ketchup bottles.
The owner of Ian’s Pizza in Madison said he’s received hundreds of telephone calls from people as far away as Egypt who want to purchase pizza for the protesters demonstrating a block away at the Wisconsin Capitol.
In the last few days, they’ve sold thousands of dollars of pizza to out-of-state supporters in 14 countries, and every state.
On Saturday alone, Ian’s gave away 1,057 free slices in their store and delivered more than 300 pizzas to the Capitol itself.

Toys”R”Us yesterday announced the launch of its nine-week in-store fundraising campaign to benefit Autism Speaks, North America’s largest autism science and advocacy organization.The company will collect donations in its stores and online through April 30 and provide a $400,000 grant to kick off its fifth annual campaign.

A new clinical study out of East Carolina University found that playing casual, non-violent video games reduced depression symptoms in study participants.
The study found that, of the 59 people who participated in the study, the half that spent an average of 40.7 minutes daily playing the games had a 57% reduction in their depression symptoms.
