A Kansas Elementary School teacher is earning the praise of his community for sending children home full of positive affirmations.

“I am kind!”

“I can do hard things.”

The cherubic chorus of voices coming out of Tyler Richards’ first-grade classroom seems nice—quaint, even. Yet the simplicity belies the change this daily practice has brought to Rex Elementary School, in Haysville.

“I love it,” Rex Elementary Principal Shane Paulus told KSN News 3. “It’s a great way for them to feel loved, feel appreciated, know they’re welcomed here and to end their day on a good note before going home.”

Mr. Richards says that it’s every educator’s hope to make a good impact on their pupils’ lives, and that the simple positive affirmations help them to feel they ended the school day in a safe, positive place.

They may be going home, or out to an extra-school activity, but the declarations of kindness and competence help the day’s next chapter start from a place of positivity.

The practice has quickly spread throughout the school, with teachers across the grades implementing similar ideas. Principal Paulus said a clear sign it’s having the intended effect is how quickly the children are taking ownership of the daily positivity practice by coming up with new ideas of how to implement it.

“I think these are just one of those ways that they feel even more connected with us and know that school is a safe place for them,” Richards said.
