450 years ago today, the keystone of Europe's first modern astronomical observatory—the Uraniborg designed by Tycho Brahe, was laid. It was also the last to be built without a telescope as its primary instrument. It was the first scientific complex to be funded entirely by a state for the purpose of research, and was so expensive it cost roughly 1% of the Danish national income. Brahe made many astronomical breakthroughs and calculations from within the walls of Uraniborg, and hosted a who's-who of European astronomical alumni. READ more... (1576)
