A 90-year-old Kenyan woman who goes to class with six of her great-great-grandchildren is believed to be the oldest primary school pupil in the world, reports the BBC

After serving her village as a midwife for the last 65 years she decided to join the young children, don a school uniform, and learn to read and write.

She also aims to inspire the older kids: “I see children who are lost, children who are without fathers, just going round and round, hopeless. I want to inspire them to go to school.”

Girl, 10, Honored for Using Sign Language to Help Deaf Crash Victim

An injured woman was trapped in her wrecked car, and paramedics were having trouble communicating with her until a young girl came along to see what was happening.

Yesenia Diosdado, 10, realized the woman was deaf and immediately began to sign with her, asking if she was hurt.

Man Who Daily Visits Memorial Bench to Wife Gets Help From Volunteer Shovelers

An 82-year-old Wisconsin widower spent more than half his life with Betty, and didn’t want to let her go. So every day he walks to the park, brings a daisy, and talks to his wife on a bench he bought and dedicated to her after she died two years ago.

After it snowed in Fond du Lac a few weeks ago, Bud had to stay in his car and talk to Betty, reports WJDT-TV. “The previous year he had tried to make his way through the snow and fell; this winter he didn’t want to risk it.”

But, two Fond du Lac Parks employees who had noticed the man’s routine, decided to help.

Jerrod Ebert and Kevin Schultz grabbed shovels, saying, “We have to make sure he can get to his bench and talk to his wife.”

The two have vowed to continue servicing the path through the entire winter.

100-Year Return of Rare Sierra Nevada Red Fox to Yosemite Nat’l Park

Excited Yosemite National Park officials yesterday reported the first confirmed sighting of a rare Sierra Nevada red fox in the park in nearly 100 years. The Sierra Nevada red fox of California is one of the rarest mammals in North America, likely consisting of fewer than 50 individuals.

Park wildlife biologists had gone on a five-day backcountry trip to the far northern part of the park to check on previously deployed motion-sensitive cameras. They documented a sighting of the fox(Vulpes vulpes necator) on two separate instances (December 13 and January 4) within the park boundary.

“We are thrilled to hear about the sighting of the Sierra Nevada red fox, one of the most rare and elusive animals in the Sierra Nevada,” stated Don Neubacher, Yosemite National Park Superintendent. “National parks like Yosemite provide habitat for all wildlife and it is encouraging to see that the red fox was sighted in the park.”Forest_Man-film-YouTube-screenshot

The nearest verified sightings of the rare foxes have been north of the park in the Sonora Pass area, where biologists from U.C. Davis, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and U.S. Forest Service have been monitoring a small population, first discovered in 2010.

The Yosemite carnivore crew will continue to survey for Sierra Nevada red fox using remote cameras in hopes of detecting additional individuals. At each camera station, the crew also set up hair snare stations in the hopes of obtaining hair samples for genetic analysis. Through genetic analysis, the park can learn more about the diversity within the population and to confirm whether the fox(es) detected in Yosemite is genetically related to individuals from the Sonora Pass area.

These Sierra Nevada red fox detections are funded by the Yosemite Conservancy, which raises money for restoration of trails, animal monitoring, youth programs, and more.

Grateful Campillo Family is Back on Top After GNN Christmas Fundraiser

Peter Campillo was absolutely shocked when our loving Good News Network community caught him and his family before they could fall into homelessness. Now in 2015 he wanted to thank us for providing overwhelming hopefulness.

In late December we rallied to boost the meager total on his GoFundMe donation page to more than $4,500. With only days until Christmas, we transformed the family’s despair into wonder.

With the help of concerned strangers from as far away as Australia, Peter, his mother, wife and teenage son were able to pay the rent for December and January and also get caught up on all their bills for the first time in “many, many months.”

“I am truly blessed and the whole entire family can not thank you or your readers enough,” he wrote in an email. “To know that there are still people in this world that still care for their fellow man is heartwarming.”

Jeep Club Volunteers Drive Hospital Workers During Winter Storm

Members of the New Brunswick Jeep Club volunteered their time during Tuesday’s storm for a good cause — helping doctors and nurses get to and from work at the local hospital.

Bundled up in the blizzard, volunteer Mike Noble told Global News, “It’s nice to help out in some small way to get our doctors and nurses where they need to be,” he said. “It really feels good at the end of the day.”

Harry Potter Fans and J.K. Rowling Win Deal to Get Child Labor Out of Chocolate

After a four-year campaign by the fan activist group the Harry Potter Alliance and its favorite author, J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. has relented and announced they would stop buying cocoa from a company known for its poor record on human rights and child labor.

The group, whose motto is “The Weapon We Have is Love,” submitted 400,000 signatures to the film studio and recently scored a victory, receiving a letter, and a public announcement.

“By the end of 2015, and sooner when possible, all Harry Potter chocolate products sold at Warner Bros. outlets and through our licensed partners will be 100-percent UTZ or Fair Trade certified.”

Now the Potter fans can resume munching on their favorite snacks of chocolate frogs.

Mystery Train Passenger Encourages Young Mum

A mystery man gave a young mum a kind note of encouragement and a £5 tip for being “polite” and teaching her child “good manners”.

As the passenger was getting off the train, he passed her a handwritten note that described the young mother as a “credit to her generation.”

Sammie Welch, 23, was traveling with her three-year-old son on a busy First Great Western train in England last week when she pulled the child out of a seat and placed the boy on her lap so another passenger could sit down.

She explained: ‘As he walked by he tapped me on the shoulder and said, “I think you’ve dropped this out of your bag,” handed me the note and got off.

She launched a social media campaign to find the man so she could thank him for his kindness. Now the two have been reunited to talk about what happened.

4-yo Calls 911, Saves Pregnant Mom and Becomes a Big Sister

A four-year-old kept calm and knew exactly what to do when her mom fell into a seizure.

She called 911 and told the dispatcher that her mother was “really pregnant” and needed help.

“I got up and that’s all I can remember,” Centerria Manning told WWMT in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “I woke up and my daughter Calise, was standing over me and she was on the phone with 911.”

“She was like, ‘I told you I was gonna take care of you if something happened,'” Centerria said.

The audio of the 7-minute telephone call was released to the media, along with the dispatcher’s recommendation that the precocious and self-sufficient little Calise get a citation for bravery.

Mother and newborn baby are healthy.

Eagles Rebound in NJ: From a Mere Two to 156 Pairs

“The bald eagle population, once so decimated by the pesticide DDT that only a single pair nested in New Jersey, is on the rebound,” reports The Record.

The statewide population now numbers 156 nesting pairs — up from 128 last year — thanks to efforts by the federal government and several generations of conservationists.

According to a Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey bald eagle report, Twenty-five new eagle pairs were found in 2014, eleven in the south, three in central and eleven in northern NJ.

79 percent of the known nests produced 201 new fledglings.

“The state’s eagle population would not be thriving without the efforts of the dedicated eagle volunteers who observe nests, report sightings, and help protect critical habitat,” said Larissa Smith and Kathleen E. Clark, who prepared the report.

Too Big for a Flat, Fans of Esther the Pig Help Start Animal Sanctuary

Derek Walters and Steve Jenkins adopted a piglet whose owner wanted to give her up, under the mistaken belief that there was such a thing as a “minipig.”

When Esther grew into the hundreds of pounds, they realized that she needed to get out of their small home in the quiet Georgetown neighborhood of Ontario. And so was born the idea of a farm sanctuary.

Esther the Pig with owner-FBphoto-326pxEsther had also grown into an Internet sensation with thousands of fans enjoying photos on EstherTheWonderPig.com showing their pet growing up. With the support of 8,000 Internet crowdfunding fans, they were able to realize their dream to buy a farm.

The new sanctuary to be called “Happily Ever Esther” will open this summer in the nearby countryside of rural Campbellville.

Calling themselves “accidental activists,” Jenkins, who’s a realtor says Happily Ever Esther will have its grand opening July 1, which happens to be Esther’s birthday. Cops Buy Back Pawned Wedding Ring for Elderly Cornwall Couple

Responding to a domestic dispute call, Cornwall police officers in Canada arrived at the home to find an elderly woman suffering from dementia and a husband had recently pawned his wedding ring in an effort to purchase groceries.

“The couple had been married 54 years and the husband admitted he was finding it difficult to not only care for his wife, but to put food on the table,” reports the Cornwall Seaway News.

“Police quickly began canvassing among themselves and raised $150 to purchase groceries for the couple, as well as $130 to buy the ring back from a local pawn shop.”

Social services that help Alzheimer’s patients are now involved and helping the couple.

Hitchhiker Gets Ride from The President of Uruguay- Hero to the Poor

Uruguay’s president has become legendary for giving 90 percent of his salary to the poor, choosing to live on an austere farm, instead of the presidential palace, and using his 28-year-old Volkswagen Beetle to get around town.

Earlier this month President Jose Mujica and his wife, a senator, were traveling in a government vehicle in the south of the country when they stopped to give a hitchhiking mill-worker a ride.

After 25 or 30 cars passed him by, Gerhald Acosta, who was heading home after work, told the Uruguayan newspaper El Observador, “I couldn’t believe it. The president was giving me a ride.”

He managed to snap a couple photos, which he later posted to Facebook, and when he got out, he said, “I thanked them profusely, because not everyone helps someone out on the road, and much less a president.”

The vegetarian president who turns eighty years old on May 20 also grows and sells flowers on his farm and lives with a three-legged dog.

In the 60s Mujica fought as a guerrilla leader in the Tupamaros movement. He was arrested several times and almost killed in the 70s and spent 13 years in horrific captivity. He was freed in 1985 under an amnesty law that covered political and related military crimes. He later helped create the Movement of Popular Participation, a political party that was accepted into a broader left-wing coalition through which he was elected as a deputy minister, and twice as a senator. Due in part to Mujica’s charisma and economic gains of the previous government, he was elected president in 2009.

The poverty rate in Uruguay has plummeted from a high of 39.9 percent in 2004 to 12.4 percent in 2012 due to efforts on behalf of successive governments to provide more funds for programs to benefit the poor.

Liberia is dealing with just five remaining cases of Ebola, the United Nations World Health Organization announced on Saturday — the clearest sign yet of the world’s success in halting the tidal wave of infections in Africa.

The West African nation, once the epicenter of the deadly epidemic, along with its neighbors Guinea and Sierra Leone, recorded almost 9,000 deaths from the virus in one year. Guinea and Sierra Leone have also recorded declines in the number of infected.

“A massive international response — including the deployment of hundreds of U.S. troops to build treatment centers — plus a public awareness campaign, contributed to a steep decline in infection rates,” reports Reuters.

Artistic neighbors worked together to decorate a white 1986 Volkswagen van using only permanent markers.

“Nabo” shared 13 photos online two years ago, demonstrating how he put up a cardboard sign in his yard inviting people to “Help Sharpie the Van.”

He bought cases of beer and Sharpies, and they started drawing.

Boy Gets “Clone Trooper” Arm From a 3-D Printer Prosthetics Enthusiast

Family and friends gathered in a room to help surprise 7-year-old Liam Porter with a new prosthetic arm — not just any prosthetic, but one built with a 3-D printer to look like the arm of a “clone trooper” from Star Wars films.

The arm’s designer, John Peterson, arrived flanked by life-sized troopers in costume and presented the gift to the thrilled Augusta, Georgia boy.

“He’s going to have the coolest arm in school,” Peterson told the Augusta Chronicle.

Last year Peterson joined e-NABLE, an online community of people with 3-D printers who use them to make prosthetics for others who need them. The group originally consisted of a couple of guys who created something to help one child in need. It has grown into a worldwide movement of tinkerers, engineers, 3D print enthusiasts, occupational therapists, university professors and designers who want to make a difference.

Packers Fan Wrote Heartwarming “Thank You” to Seattle on Craigslist

A 55-year-old Orlando man who brought his 10-year-old son to the NFC Championship in Seattle to try to ease his grief over the loss of a beloved pet wrote about how a young Seahawks fan changed his attitude in the midst of a big game loss. Read the touching story, in the words of his father:

“First of all what a great game yesterday. Both teams had their ups and downs and as a Packer fan I must say the end was not what I expected. The reason I am posting today is to let others know of the kindness shared to my 10 year old son by a 12 year old girl from Seattle at the game .

My son lost his best friend in the world last week after a short illness. He grew up with Boo from about one year old. Boo was my son’s dog, his best friend, the one who played with him, shared most all home meals with him and loved him no matter what.

I was lost as how to help him heal, and out of nowhere a dear friend offered us two tickets to the game in Seattle. I got the tickets, bought the plane tickets and told my son. He was very excited and for a minute seemed to be doing better.

Off we went and boy what a great time we had. Seattle is such a wonderful city and to see our much loved Packers play could it get any better. Sunday arrived and off we went to the game. Great seats, loud, exciting, nothing better then this I thought.

 We were seated next to a large family of Seattle fans so what joy we were having kidding them as our Packers run off to a lead. My son was sitting right next to a young girl of 12. They talked and seemed to be having a great time.

Well we all know that the Packers played a great game but a win was not to be had. After Seattle scored in overtime I noticed the young girl was crying and still sitting in her seat. Her father talked to her and gave her a hug. When we were leaving I asked the father if the girl was crying for joy by the win and to my shock he told me no, she was crying because she wanted the Packers to win because she knew my son had lost his dog and she thought he needed this more then she did. I kept this to myself on the flight home.

While my son was having our dinner meal he looked at me and said he was glad that Seattle had won. I was surprised and ask him why. He looked at me and told me the girl sitting next to him had lost her cat to a dog attack only the day before and he wanted her to have something to help her feel better.

Football will never be the same to me. So Thank You Seattle for the great game, and Thank You God for putting so much love for others to these two young people. Wishing Seattle only the very best but know the Pack Will Be Back!!!!!!!!”
