A student passionate about biofuel set up a lab in her bedroom, complete with bubbling beekers, and ended up winning this year’s Intel Science Talent Search. Sara Volz, 17, of Colorado Springs, Colo., won the top award of $100,000 from the Intel Foundation for her research into next-generation algae biofuel.

Algae can be converted into a renewable fuel, but it can be costly. Sara used artificial selection to establish populations of algae cells with higher oil content, which could lead to an economically feasible biofuel.

$40 and a Note of Support Overwhelms Soldier and His Girlfriend Back Home

A U.S. soldier deployed in Afghanistan was thrilled to the point of tears by $40 and a note of support for his girlfriend back home. Army Spc. Albert DeSimone said what overwhelmed him was knowing that a stranger was “there for her” while he was overseas.

DeSimone’s girlfriend Samantha Ford was leaving a Dunkin’ Donuts Sunday in Arlington, Mass., when she saw a white envelope tucked under the windshield wiper on her car, and posted it to a military Facebook page.

She has a bumper sticker that reads, “1/2 of my heart is in Afghanistan.”

The note read, “I noticed the sticker on the back of your car. Take your hero out to dinner when he comes home. Thank you both for serving. Him deployed and you for waiting. –United States veteran. God bless.”

cancer cells illustration A treatment that genetically alters a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer has, for the first time, produced remissions in adults with an acute leukemia that is usually lethal, researchers are reporting.

All the patients went into remission. In one patient who was severely ill, all traces of leukemia vanished in eight days.

“We had hoped, but couldn’t have predicted that the response would be so profound and rapid,” said Dr. Renier J. Brentjens.

Bad weather in Atlanta forced a flight to end up on a tarmac for three hours after major delays, but the passengers had a great story to tell with some happy memories thanks to a compassionate Delta Airlines flight crew.

Thirty pizzas were delivered to the stalled airplane in Knoxville — both cheese and pepperoni — to make the wait a little more bearable.

“It was still hot, too,” said one passenger. “That was the best part.”

The Rector and congregation of St John’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen have offered the hand of Christian fellowship – and part of their church building – to the hundreds of Muslims attending a neighboring and overcrowded mosque.

The Aberdeen mosque is so busy at times that members of the Muslim community were having to pray outside in the wind and rain. They have now been offered the use of part of the Episcopalian church hall for daily prayers.

A Chinese bowl that a New York family picked up for $3 at a garage sale turned out to be a 1,000-year-old ceramic treasure by a Chinese master.

The bowl — 5 inches in diameter with a saw-tooth pattern etched around the outside — was sold at auction for $2.2 million at Sotheby’s auction house in New York on Tuesday.

The only other known bowl of similar size and design has been in the collection of the British Museum for more than 60 years.

All 193 United Nations member states last year adopted a resolution decreeing March 20 to be the first International Day of Happiness. To celebrate, people all around the world are bringing happiness to others and talking about it on social media networks.

The creation of the International Day of Happiness followed the first ever UN conference on Happiness and Wellbeing in July 2012, and its World Happiness Report which called on member states to place a greater focus on the happiness of their citizens and to “promote happiness as a universal goal and aspiration in the lives of human beings around the world.”

In the African jungle, conservationist Damian Aspinall searched for Kwibi, a lowland gorilla he hasn’t seen for 5 years.

Kwibi grew up with Damian at his Wild Animal Park in England. When he was five, the gorilla was released into the forests of Gabon, West Africa as part of conservation program to re-introduce animals back into the wild.

Now Kwibi is 10 years old, much bigger and fiercer. Might the animal attack Damian when they do come face to face?

The 10th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals last week rejected a challenge by the energy industry attempting to force the Secretary of the Interior to issue oil and gas leases on public lands in Utah and Wyoming.

The Interior Department declined to issue the leases after it found that that its Bureau of Land Management had not fully complied with laws and policies designed to protect sensitive resources like sage grouse and wilderness values.
