T’is the season of giving – and Lexi Bergeron is being cheered for giving the gift of a hot lunch to dozens of her fellow students.

The fourth grader from Grand Haven, Michigan has helped raise hundreds of dollars to pay off the lunch debt of her entire school district.

Lexi first became inspired to raise the money to pay for lunch debts at her school, Ferry Elementary, after seeing a news segment about another child doing the same thing.

The 11-year-old decided to earn the money by selling handmade “fidget toys” – 50 cents for a small one, and a dollar for the large.

Touched by her daughter’s determination, Lexi’s mother Sara created a GoFundMe page to supplement whatever finances Lexi was unable to raise.

When Lexi’s campaign was picked up by local news outlets, the donations surged past their original goal of paying off the school’s $188 lunch debt. The page then went on to raise $2,300, which is enough to pay off the school lunch debt—and anxiety that grows with it—for the entire district.

“I am overwhelmed and humbled by the support we’ve received,” says Sara. “Not only from our community but nationwide. I proudly announce we have reached her goal! THANK YOU all for your donations and well wishes.”
