Nick and Eva Broderick on their hike which nearly killed them – credit,

Nick Broderick describes the moment he decided to marry his girlfriend Eva as electric: it was as if he were struck by lightning.

Love language aside, that’s actually exactly what happened.

While enjoying a hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin in August of 2025, Nick and his girlfriend Eva had come to within 2 miles of their car when the weather turned.

The rain began to fall, but with nowhere to shelter they decided to make a march for the finish carpark. At a certain point, rather prophetically, Eva turned around and looked at the man who would become her husband and asked…

“What if we get struck by lightning?”

All Nick remembers is hearing a boom. A tree beside them took the brunt of a lightning strike, while the lovers were shocked by the ground current. It left Nick stiff as a board.

“All I remember was being curled in a fetal position with my hands over my ears, screaming, I think, and feeling what can only be described as electricity in my feet,” Eva Broderick said.

“I was curled into Nick, and I looked over. He was laying on his back, his eyes were half open, glazed over, and he was blue and not breathing.”

Eva immediately started CPR after calling 911, but the signal was poor, and besides that she had no way of communicating where they were along the trial. It took 50 minutes for search and rescue to locate them, during which time Eva had to restart her boyfriend’s heart twice.

But Nick and his heart were made of sterner stuff, and he pulled through after a 3-day stay in the hospital with just a pinch of hearing loss in one ear and some tendon damage.

Realizing both his heart and his life metaphorically belonged to Eva, he proposed upon discharge from the hospital, and, wanting to change the narrative of August, the pair were married short of a year to the day that they both almost died amid nature’s fury.

“I’ve made the joke quite a few times that he can’t leave me. I brought him back from death, so he’s kind of stuck,” Eva Broderick, who was presented with a lifesaving award from the Palmyra Fire Department, told Action News 5, reporting on their story.
