Pennsylvania Supreme Court Rules Against Fracking industry

Farm in autumn VWV

Farm in autumn VWVThe Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Thursday struck down provisions of the state’s Oil and Gas Act that stripped municipalities of the power to determine where natural gas drilling activity could occur within their boundaries.

The long-awaited decision is a blow to a 2012 law promoted by Gov. Corbett and the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry as a means to create a uniform statewide standard for gas development.

By a 4-2 vote, the court ruled that taking away the right of localities to limit fracking is unconstitutional.

“With this ruling, municipal governments will once again have the ability to determine when and where fracking occurs in their locality,” said a local environmental group. “This is crucial for protecting public health, our environment and our communities.”

Utah On Track To End Homelessness By 2015

Homeless man by-miekaspop-Morguefile

Homeless man by-miekaspop-MorguefileThe success of a 10-year initiative to end long-term homelessness could mean the closure of homeless shelters in Utah.

The state has reduced its rate of chronic homelessness by 69 percent since 2006, moving 2000 people off the street and into apartments.

Last winter, there were excess beds available each night in a Salt Lake City area emergency shelter, which officials attribute to the success of the rehousing program that places homeless families and individuals into permanent supportive housing.

Once they settle into housing, they can begin work on the issues that have contributed to their homelessness, according to the Deseret News.

But the toll would almost certainly have been higher if not for 34-year-old Ayyub Khalaf.

“His name will be an eternal symbol because he saved the lives of dozens of innocents,” said Khalaf’s friend.

FaceBook photo of the couple

FaceBook photo of the coupleFor James “Bim” Costello, April 15th was one of the worst days of his life. At the finish line of the Boston Marathon when the bomb exploded, he suffered not only physical wounds but emotional trauma, after learning about his friends and their injuries.

“I soon wondered why and for what reason this had happened,” he wrote in a Facebook post this week.

Recovering in Spaulding Hospital, and still wondering what good could come from the tragedy, he met a nurse named Krista.

“After sharing a handful of conversations I realized not only how beautiful she was but also what a kind heart she had (and) somehow convinced her to attend a benefit with me,” Costello wrote.

After a few “inseparable months” he realized the silver lining of his involvement in the tragedy eights months ago: “It was to meet my best friend, and the love of my life.”

“We got engaged last night in the middle of the beautiful French city Lyon!!!”
