A coalition of industrialists, environmentalists and energy specialists is announcing next week a campaign to eliminate America's use of incandescent light bulbs within 10 years. It will press for government-enforced efficiency standards to make the old-bulb technology obsolete. (After all, it dates back to the introduction of the telegraph and steam locomotive, which have long since been replaced by better technology.) -NY Times

Singapore has met a target for water recycling four years early. Tired of importing half its water from neighboring countries, Singapore is making itself more self-sufficient through recycling. "Oprah Winfrey opened a second school for South African children today in poverty-stricken KwaZulu-Natal province, built with money provided by her Angel Network. Unlike her Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened outside Johannesburg in January, this school will be run by the local public education authorities. The Angel Network, backed by the popular talk-show host, has built 59 schools in 12 countries in the developing world." (CBC) |
