Great news about those horrible plastic shell encasements that seem to require super-human strength — and stabbing motion with scissors — to extract anything from their clutches. Costco will begin to use recycled cases that are easy to open, helpful for our environment and soothing of customers nerves. I LOVE Costco! (Treehugger has details, and photo of angry unwrapper)

Almost ten years later, she has used that same determination and drive to help protect and rescue countless thousands of fellow refugees of genocide, and this April was honored for her humanitarian outreach at the 5th Annual Volvo for life Awards ceremony in New York City. Volvo named Mapendo "America's Greatest Hometown Hero" and awarded her a $50,000 charitable contribution and a new Volvo every three years for the rest of her life...
 

Smokies To Rid Areas Of Nonnative Plants

kudzuThe Great Smoky Mountains National Park received special funding this year to remove nonnative plants from 11 wetlands, a Knoxville newspaper reported. If left unchecked, invasive plants introduced here, often by accident -- like Kudzu, a fast-growing Asian vine that now smothers some seven million acres in the south -- will continue to overtake native species upsetting the delicate balance in America's most visited National Park.
