medal_of_honor-Kyle-Carpenter-WHPhoto

At the White House Thursday, President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Corporal William “Kyle” Carpenter, a retired US Marine whose courageous actions shielding a fellow soldier and beloved friend from a grenade blast in Afghanistan.

Kyle’s more than two year recovery from devastating injuries, including 40 different surgeries, is a model of strength and resilience. “He has a new eye, new teeth, new jaw, and one helluva smile,” remarked Obama in his speech

”After everything he’s been through,” the President continued, “he skis, he snowboards, has run a 6-mile Mud Run and completed the Marine Corps Marathon.”

“He’s a motivational speaker… and is thinking of getting his degree in psychology so he can use his experiences to help others. He’s in school getting stellar grades.”

“And by the way, he’s only 24 years old, and says, ‘I am just getting started.'”

Mexico City Roof Gardens Take Root to Combat Smog, Warming

Chicago_City_Hall_Green_Roof-CC-TonyTheTiger

In one of the world’s biggest and most polluted cities, rooftop gardens are springing up in an effort to battle the smog, part of an initiative driven by Mexico City’s government.

Roof gardens absorb heat, boost energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

The government plans to increase dramatically the number of green roof projects, which covered more than 6,000 square meters last year, with the goal of planting 100,000 square meters by the end of the project — mainly targeting schools and hospitals.

“The patients can come and enjoy this area not only because of the view but because of the green environment this rooftop has,” said Dr. Rolf Meiners y Huebner, director of Obdulia Rodriguez Rodriquez Hospital. “You could say physically and emotionally it can contribute to the recuperation of our patients.”

“Nobody knows the Connecticut River better than Jim Dietz, a three-time Olympic rower and two-time Olympic coach who built the University of Massachusetts women’s crew team into an East Coast powerhouse.”

“Once swollen with sewerage and industrial waste, the river has improved steadily over the past two decades, making it far more suitable for rowing, Dietz stated. Currently, 10 school or club rowing programs use the river, reflecting its sharply reduced level of pollution.”

The Act of Forgiveness: Learning How to Forgive

photo by Anita Patterson via Morguefile

From a handwritten letter by victim's mom - CBS snapshot

“To err is human; to forgive, divine.” ~ Alexander Pope

There is one golden rule of happiness that sounds so simple but is often drowned out in the chaotic noise of our lives “Treat others like you would like to be treated”. We need to cultivate the ability to forgive others as well as ourselves in order to live in harmony.

Throughout our lives we may find ourselves in a position that requires us to think about forgiveness, and we do not always know how best to do that. There are three types of forgiveness, forgiving the self, those that have been harmed by our actions, and forgiving of others that have harmed us. To capture the essence from the transformation of forgiveness, the emotional steps occur:
Understand your actions;
Resolve to change;
Right the wrong;
Apologize;
Heal the damage.

“To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.” ~ Robert Muller

These steps are challenging, I know from personal experience. It takes great courage and strength to follow them. To me it was transformational, a healing journey to release wrongs. The wrongs that I held against myself, the wrongs inflicted upon me from others and wrongs I inflicted upon others. Reaching out and moving forward to release these fears, past hurts, resentments, anger and judgments will change your life. By forgiving you are releasing the initial harm. The real gift comes from releasing the second harm the energy you have been using to hold on to it. By releasing the second harm, you are releasing them from your present and your future.

On our journey on this beautiful blue planet earth, we all need to learn how to forgive. We will not pass to the other side without forgiving. We all make mistakes. We do the best we can with the information we have at the time we make decisions and act.

Start with yourself first. Forgive yourself. If you are not in harmony and balance in your heart and forgive yourself, how can you forgive others or ask for forgiveness from others? People will feel it authentically when you come with your own forgiveness in the past. They will see your energy and light. They will know something changed.

photo by Anita Patterson via MorguefileBy forgiving you are not letting another off the “hook”. Forgiving is helping you heal. You can forgive, but you cannot forget. Put it in the past and learn from the experience. Once you forgive, you see life with a new view. You live in the present more.

What happens if you cannot forgive? Everyone here is on a journey. If people cannot forgive they are holding onto the lower energies and vibrations that limit joy, love and the light within each of us. If others cannot forgive, still send them a blessing. Know that they are doing the best with what they presently have in their life. Do not judge them do not make assumptions. Each person must experience this within his or her own heart. One cannot force another to forgive or accept forgiveness. Again, send the blessing and move on. Forgive with the highest emotion LOVE.

Enjoy your life, laugh again and see wonderful qualities in others, this is the benefit you receive when you forgive! You also lose judgment. Judging another is one of the lowest energies. Worry about yourself. Send blessings and be a peace, and maybe some day that blessing will connect.
Sharing this message will assist others to be at peace. This is my mission. If one person captures the sense of forgiveness and moves to forgive – energy has been shifted. The act of forgiveness and learning how to forgive is passionate to my heart.

Learn from the past, forgive yourself and let it go. Move forward with a light heart, mind and soul. Your light will shine with balance joy, harmony, love and peace. You will discover a new self at your core. Your soul will dance. There will be a wellspring of love from the release. The gratitude and appreciation will be transformational. I guarantee it will make a difference in your life – I did for me!

“You will know that forgiveness has begun when you recall those who hurt you and feel the power to wish them well.” ~ Lewis B. Smedes

Why do you think its so hard for so many people to forgive, release and let go of past hurts? Is forgiveness an act of weakness or an act of strength? Have you figured out a way to let go of resentment, forgive yourself and those who have harmed? I really want to know what are your thoughts on this. You can share your insights by joining the conversation in the comment section bellow.

The 10 Quickest Ways to Boost Your Happiness

Kids_jump_for_joy_happiness-Flickr-Lighttruth-cc

Articles with titles like this usually offer up simple platitudes for being happy, such as “accept everyone,” or “live a balanced life.” While those ideas are true, such platitudes are so general that they don’t really give you anything that impacts your daily life. This article offers what scientific research found to be the top 10 things you can quickly do to boost your level of happiness. By doing any one of the 10 items below, you will almost surely feel dramatically better in under three minutes. In addition, by combining items from the list below, you can increase their effectiveness even more…

10. Look at pictures of people and animals you love on your smartphone or computer. As you look at each picture, remember an enjoyable time you had with them, and send them a silent wish that they live a happy and productive life.

9. Exercise-even if only for 3 minutes. Take a quick brisk walk, do some jumping jacks, whatever gets your heart going and your lungs breathing more deeply. In even a minute you’ll start to feel better. Hallelujah for such a simple thing.

 8. Give someone money. Research shows that when we give to a needy person money, we immediately feel better about ourselves. It helps another person too, so it’s a win-win.

7. Get cooler. By going from a hot or warm environment to a cooler one, our mood and sense of happiness tends to go up. Hooray for air conditioning!

6. Work towards an important goal. Whether it be cleaning your desk or selling more widgets, when you feel like you’re making progress towards a specific and important goal, you invariably feel better. Just by reading all the way through this article, you’ll have achieved something-so you’ll feel good.

5. Invoke the power of gratitude. Just saying a sincere “Thank you” to people who serve you at a restaurant or bag your groceries can be a quick happiness booster. Another thing you can do to feel grateful is to write down three things you currently feel grateful for in your life. They could be big things-such as your children, or small things such as the great burger you had for lunch. By writing them down, you’ll immediately see that there is a lot of good in your life.

meditation photo by Garsett Larosse4. Do a 90-second “heart meditation,” which consists of taking a deep breath and imagining exhaling out the center of your chest. Then, close your eyes and imagine someone you love-such as a pet, child, or friend. Remember special times with this being, and bask in the gratitude that they’re in your life. If you want, imagine hugging or holding them in a way that helps you to feel connected to them. This simple method can take you from stressed out to blissed out in about 90 seconds. Research shows that doing this for one minute can reduce your stress hormones for up to five hours.

3. Spend time with a pet or in nature. Pets and trees exist to appreciate each moment. You and I, on the other hand, spend most our time thinking about the past or worrying about the future. If you spend time playing with a pet or enjoying nature, some of their ability to be present in the moment will rub off on you.

2. Play a song that you really enjoy and sing along. Here’s something to try: sing along with I Wanna Hold Your Hand by the Beatles and try to feel depressed. You can’t do it. By singing along with your favorite songs, you can lift yourself out of almost any bad mood.

delivering food1. And, finally, the single most effective way to quickly boost your happiness is: do an act of kindness for a stranger or friend. Yep, it’s true. When you do a small act of kindness, you feel better, your friend feels better, and the world has a bit more kindness in it. Even something small like saying what you appreciate about someone will immediately boost your level of well-being-as well as theirs.

So now that you know the top 10 ways to quickly boost your happiness level, do something about it! The world could use a lot more happy people. After all, happy people are less selfish, they’re more productive, they make more money, and they are healthier than the rest of us.

One simple way to boost your happiness this moment is to forward this article to friends and family, telling them you were thinking about them, and happier yourself because of them. What could be better than that? Do it now with the buttons below.

Millions Paying Less Than $100 Per Month for Obamacare

heart-stethoscope-lrg-imelenchon-cc

Many Americans doubted whether the Affordable Care Act passed by Congress — also known as Obamacare — would be able to offer low prices on health insurance for consumers.

Now the numbers are coming in, and it appears that for many Americans the health-insurance plans bought under the new government program are fairly affordable. Almost seven out of 10 people who bought plans through federally run marketplaces and who receive tax credits are paying monthly premiums of less than $100, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Wednesday.

Since October 1, 2013, over eight million Americans have selected a private health insurance plan through the the Health Insurance Marketplace where consumers can purchase health insurance plans in a competitive market.

69 percent of individuals selecting plans with tax credits have premiums of $100 or less after tax credits—nearly half (46 percent) have premiums of $50 or less after tax credits.

A Wilderness Solution for Vets

mountain-climbing-CC-ross_vernal-Scottish_Dream_Photography

“Vets often go from a world with deep camaraderie, commitment, and excitement to a world where they are isolated, at loose ends, and bored,” said Nick Watson, explaining the concept of  Veterans Expeditions.

Watson speaks from experience—he is a former U.S. Army Ranger—and he knows just how psychologically perilous the military experience can be.

Having worked as an alpine guide and a counselor in wilderness therapy programs for over a decade, Watson, 40, also believes in the healing force of nature and was convinced that a vigorous outdoor experience would be tonic for veterans, a way for them to “reconnect with fellow soldiers, get outside, and push themselves in a healthy environment.”

Dance Teacher Pairs Jewish and Palestinian Children With Award-Winning Results

Dancing-in-Jaffa-rooftop-Israel

“What I am asking them to do is to dance with the enemy,” says Pierre Dulaine in the 88-minute documentary, Dancing in Jaffa.

Dulaine, a four-time world champion ballroom dancer, is fulfilling a life-long dream, having taken his New York City program, Dancing Classrooms, back to his city of birth, Jaffa.

For generations, Jaffa has been a city divided by two communities that continue to grow increasingly apart. Palestinians and Israelis live together but often segregated lives.

Over a ten-week period, Dulaine teaches Jewish and Palestinian children to dance side by side, hand in hand, and compete together, working as a team. The 2013 film directed by Hilla Medalia focuses on the lives of three children, all of whom who are forced to confront issues of identity, segregation, and racial prejudice as they dance with their enemy. We watch this dance program transform their lives, confirming his belief that dance can overcome hatred and provide the first steps towards real change.

Dancing Classrooms, is still going strong two years after the ballroom dance legend began the program in his ancestral home. The film has won several audience awards after its world debut at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“An Awakening” Thanks to Cancer

Karen-Rice-author-poetWhen I was diagnosed with Breast cancer a few years back, I reacted like most who receive that kind of news; first thing that came to mind was a “death sentence”. However, I found out later that it was truly “an awakening” for me. I began questioning God, why would you do this to me? What had I done in life so bad to have this placed upon me? But instead of bemoaning my fate, I decided to look for the positive side of it. There has to be a reason for it all.

I also realized that I was about to face a new beginning, new hopes to do and see more with a whole new perspective on life. When I think of the “gift of life” that was given to me, I know that I will develop and gain strength from all my experiences.

After going through all that I did during my breast cancer period, I was left with a few complications I now have to live with; one being daily pain. For a while, I wasn’t happy with the way I looked around my breast area after my first surgery, nor the pain I had to endure each day, but I decided to snap out of it — even after being diagnosed with another cancer (colon) a few years later, which totally took me by surprise. I thought to myself. Why another one? I even make jokes at times, while crying inside.

But even with the pain I had to endure through each diagnosis, and all the struggles I’ve dealt with all my life, I still feel truly blessed. I think about the individuals that are no longer among us. I also realized that there will always be someone worse off than I am. I reminded myself, that “I still have my life”, so who am I to complain.

One day, during one of my surgeries, I experienced something of a miracle, as if I went to the other side, so I felt the compulsion to write it down. I turned that experience into a poem and I called it “Peace”.

Writing had become therapy for me. I took that poem, along with many others I had composed during my breast cancer period and placed them into book form. I was blessed enough to have that book published and it’s titled “True Simple Poems of Life, Faith and Survival”. I later had another inspirational children’s book published and the third one should be out very soon, which talks about my whole experiences with both cancers. I’m hoping that anyone who has the opportunity to read the poems of my first book, will get out of them what I placed in all of them. My poems are from the heart, as real as any could ever be. With the words and phrases of each poem a statement, I wish to make a positive impact on someone who’s ill or otherwise, where they could develop the strength to embrace life in a whole new way.

True-Simple-Poems-of-Life-Faith-and-Survival-book-coverI never anticipated becoming a writer, I just became one. I truly believe when you survive a horrific tragedy or a horrible disease as cancer, it’s for a reason, “you have a purpose” and I want to live to find out exactly what that is for me.

That’s what I’m all about now, inspiration. I would have never become a writer, producing inspirational poems and stories, if I had not gone through all that I did. I’m a true example that you can survive cancer not once, but twice, providing you catch it in time, have faith and allow that faith to direct your path. I’ve not saying all will be easy, I had my moments from the beginning; when my breast cancer wasn’t found by the mammogram, it was detected by an Ultrasound. Either way, you must be tested, and no matter the outcome; be strong, deal with it and believe.
