Reclusive Heiress Bequeaths $40 million to Vancouver Community

WilMar Estate Vancouver-Flickr

WilMar Estate Vancouver-FlickrA shy and reclusive heiress who lived alone for 20 years in a rambling mansion left the bulk of an estate worth $40 million to the Vancouver Foundation.

One of the largest charitable bequests in British Columbia history, the fund will add $700,000 per year to the hundreds of thousands of dollars the community foundation already spends on non-profits and BC projects focused on youth homelessness, the arts, parks, and people with disabilities.

Little is known about Judith Jardine. She was sole heir to the wealth of the Kitchen/Jardine families of Vancouver and the 2.5 acre (1 hectare) WilMar estate, built in 1925.

“We were completely surprised by this generous estate gift,” said Vancouver Foundation President and CEO Faye Wightman, who had never met the woman.

She was an only child and made the bequest in her will to honor the memory of her father, William Jardine, with instructions to set up a fund called the W.E. Jardine Memorial Fund.

Judith Jardine was born October 4, 1924 to Gladys (Kitchen) Jardine and William Jardine. Judith’s maternal grandfather, Willard Kitchen, lived and worked in New Brunswick building railways, where he apparently amassed his fortune. After moving with his family to Vancouver, he became a director of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, which later became BC Rail.

Judith was active in Vancouver’s arts community, serving as board secretary of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver from 1962 to 1979 and co-authored a book on the history of the council. She never married and had no children or heirs. She suffered from dementia in her final years, and passed away on May 7, 2006 at the age of 82.

“From what we know about Judith Jardine, she lived a relatively quiet, unassuming life, but upon her death in 2006 she made an uncharacteristically big splash with this bequest,” said Ms. Wightman. “The ripples of her generosity will be felt for generations to come.”

The Power of Spontaneous Community Caring

Neighborhood friends in Houston photo by LemonadeDay-CCThe Eastern Market neighborhood near Capitol Hill was the scene of a remarkable community rescue during a sudden eviction of one of their most colorful residents.

On a recent day when Michael’s possessions began filling the sidewalk under the orders of federal marshals, a few of his neighbors wondered if there was something they could do to help. Michael was nowhere to be seen, but his ostentatious furniture was drawing a crowd: Lurking nearby were people in vans waiting to nab the belongings as soon as the officials exited the area.

A couple of vendors from the local market joined in the vigil and began making phone calls. Then, just when things could have gotten ugly, a spontaneous rescue unfolded with surprising and impressive results. The neighborhood characters each played a role in protecting the dignity of one of their own.

dog keeps watch over owners grave LA VOZphotoAn Alaskan malamute with a nose for mischief suddenly found a new mission for her afternoons: paying a daily visit to an ailing elderly neighbor and easing the stress of an entire family.

Normally Carol gets complaints about the dog, but this unexpected knock at the door was different.

A man said, “We have a sliding-glass door that we usually keep open in the summer, and every day for the last several weeks your dog has wandered off the street and come uninvited into my house.”

Carol jumped in, “I’m so sorry.”

But it turns out the man had come over to thank her. His father, who had Alzheimer’s, was living with them and needed constant monitoring. His agitated behavior exhausted everyone in the house.

Why Businesses Make a Mistake Pushing Older Workers Out

businessmen seniors-SCORE board member-FBThere is a downside to pushing out older workers, in favor of younger ones.

Less gray hair in an organization can sharply reduce its innovation potential, which over the long term can greatly outweigh the short-term benefits of younger workers needing lower salaries and costing less in health care. If an organization wants innovation to flourish, the conversation needs to change from severance packages to retention bonuses.
