Company is Offering to Retrain Coal Miners as Wind Farmers For Free

As demand for coal drops further and further in light of expanding renewable energy sources, more and more American workers are faced with unemployment and poverty.

That’s why this company plans on retraining coal miners to become wind farmers.

Goldwind Americas is the Illinois-based branch of a Chinese wind turbine manufacturer. The company has recently announced that they will be offering free training programs for any coal worker in need of a job.

Following an energy conference on Thursday, officials have announced that the newest Goldwind wind farm will be opening up shop in Carbon County, Wyoming – the first coal mining site to ever open in the state.

RELATEDBloomberg Gives $3Mil to Job Training For Coal Communities in Decline

Goldwind has promised to build roughly 850 turbines in the region, which will require a team of 200 workers to maintain. In the company’s eyes, coal miners are an ideal, untapped work force who already have an understanding of mechanical engineering, as well as hard labor. In the coming summer months, the Goldwind Works program will start the retraining process, which will hopefully scoop dozens of Americans out of poverty.

“If we can tap into that market and also help out folks that might be experiencing some challenges in the work force today, I think that it can be a win-win situation,” Goldwind chief executive, David Halligan, told the New York Times. “If you’re a wind technician, you obviously can’t be afraid of heights. You have to be able to work at heights, and you have to be able to work at heights in a safe manner.”

Tom Hardy Raises Thousands to Help Care For Bombing Victims

Hollywood dreamboat Tom Hardy isn’t just an action hero on the movie screen – he is ready to take action in real life, too.

On the morning following the Manchester Arena bombing of the Ariana Grande concert, Hardy took to social media to start raising money for the afflicted.

The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road actor created a Just Giving crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the bomb victim’s families and the Red Cross Society.

The “Manchester Emergency Fund” has already raised $30,000, which is double its original goal.

“I hope between us, we can raise some funds as a gesture of goodwill and love to help in some small way towards repairing some if any of the damage done in the wake of last night’s events,” says Hardy. “There will be much to do, and for many, the beginning of a new life without those that they love and also a new life damaged irrevocably by the actions of a crime which has no reason, no heartfelt purpose, but was simply a cruel cowardly and barbaric, meaningless act of violence.”

Hardy isn’t the only one stepping up to the plate following Monday’s tragedy, either – Her Majesty the Queen took time out of her schedule to chat with the bombing victims at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. City residents also came together earlier this week to have a minute of silence for the deceased, following up the solemn sixty seconds with a heartfelt, spontaneous chorus of “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Oasis.

Small Animal Shelter Staff ‘Blown Away’ by $275,000 Gift

Most of us aren’t really sure how we will be remember after we die – but after this week, we’re positive that Daryl Mutz is going to be remembered as an extraordinarily generous man.

That’s because he left $275,000 of his estate to an animal shelter he wasn’t even affiliated with.

Though the late 83-year-old passed away three years ago, the New Westminster Animal Shelter of British Columbia was only recently informed that they would be receiving the cash.

Daryl’s will states that $55,000 of the donation must fund veterinary bills for low-income families, as well as animals in need of more expensive surgical procedures and care. Several other large portions of Daryl’s estate will be going towards The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. and the Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund and Covenant House.

“We are totally blown away. A thousand dollars is a really big donation for us, so to hear that amount was unbelievable,” animal control officer Margie Fox told CTV Vancouver. “We would love to keep a legacy for this gentleman. I think he must have been an amazing man.”

Muslims and The Queen Step Up After Manchester Bombing

In the wake of the Manchester Arena bombing on Monday night, several groups and celebrities have stepped up to help and encourage the city in their own special ways.

Queen Elizabeth II, a vision of grace and elegance, visited the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital to chat with the bombing victims and their families. Some of the younger patients who had suffered injuries during the concert were understandably excited at meeting Her Royal Majesty.

The Queen also personally thanked and shook hands with the hospital staff, who have been working around the clock to provide emergency care for their patients since the incident.

The Queen isn’t the only one who is lending a hand, either – Muslims all over Manchester have offered up their services to assist the affected.

In the chaotic aftermath of the explosion, Muslim taxi drivers within the city limits announced that they would be giving free rides to anyone who needed them, totally free of charge.

As evidenced by the dozens of testimonies on Twitter, families, friends, and city residents were given free rides all over the region in the 24 hours following the disaster. Other drivers simply remained on standby with food, water, and phone chargers at the ready.

In addition to taxi drivers, four Sikh temples in the region offered up shelter and nourishment for anyone who was stranded.

“Sikh Temples in Manchester, UK offering food & accommodation. They are open for ALL people. #PrayForManchester,” posted a local Sikh man, along with the addresses of the temples.

Other residents took up the call to action and started #RoomForManchester, a tag used by locals who were offering up their homes and phone chargers to anyone who was stranded.

“This is an absolutely horrifying incident and our thoughts are with everyone affected, especially those who have lost loved ones or been injured and traumatized,” said Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council. “If it is confirmed this was a terrorist attack it is a monstrous act but also a deeply futile one. Manchester is a proud and strong city and we will not allow those who seek to sow fear and division to achieve their aims.”

Courageous 20-Year-old Prevents Church From Burning Down

CJ Sparks may have been sent by God to put out this church fire – or he may have just been in the right place at the right time.

Either way, if it weren’t for the courageous actions of the 20-year-old, the Advent Lutheran Church in Citrus Heights, California almost certainly would have been seriously damaged by the blaze.

While driving through town last Wednesday afternoon, CJ saw smoke and flames rising from the religious building. He turned his car around and pulled into the church’s parking lot only to see that the entire side of the building was on fire.

CHECK OUT: Homeless Man Who Became Hero in Manchester Bombing Rewarded With Housing

CJ called the fire department, but he didn’t know if they would arrive in time. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

He went inside the church and grabbed several fire extinguishers. CJ then spent the next fifteen minutes extinguishing the blaze alongside a neighboring woman who grabbed her garden hose after spotting the smoke. By the time the firefighters arrived, most of the fire had already been taken care of.

It’s a good thing that CJ acted so instinctively, too – the flames were on the side of the building containing the church’s food pantry, which they use to feed hundreds of homeless people every week.

All in a day’s work for CJ the good Samaritan.

Watch Crowd Sing Spontaneous Oasis Song After Minute of Silence For Manchester Victims

A poignant message was being sang in Manchester after there was a minute of silence for the people killed in the bombing.

The message was the chorus of “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Manchester-based rock band Oasis.

It started with one woman who was carrying a bouquet of yellow flowers. Then, the whole crowd joins in with the rousing chorus:

So Sally can wait
She knows it’s too late as we’re walking on by
Her soul slides away
But don’t look back in anger
I heard you say

As the song dies out, a man can be heard yelling “I love you, Manchester!” before everyone breaks into applause.

First Asian Country Rules in Favor of Same-sex Marriage

Taiwan has just become the first Asian country to begin the process of legalizing same-sex marriage.

The nation’s highest court, the council of grand justices, ruled that barring the people’s right to marry whomever they choose was unconstitutional. Only 2 of the 14 judges present voted against the ruling.

The Taiwanese parliament now has two years to amend current marriage laws in recognition of same-sex marriage, or pass new legislation approving the process.

“Sexual orientation is an immutable characteristic that is resistant to change,” the court said in its ruling. “The freedom of marriage for two persons of the same sex, once legally recognized, will constitute the collective basis, together with opposite-sex marriage, for a stable society.”

CHECK OUTDramatic Reduction in Teen Suicide Attempts After Same-sex Marriage Legalization

“Disallowing two persons of the same sex to marry, for the sake of safeguarding basic ethical orders, is a different treatment, also obviously having no rational basis. Such different treatment is incompatible with the spirit and meaning of the right to equality as protected by Article 7 of the Constitution.”

Though it is unclear as to whether same-sex couples will have the same rights under the new legislation as heterosexual marriages, LGBT activists are already campaigning for parliament to give them equal adoption, visitation, and inheritance rights, among others. The current Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, has been openly supportive of LGBT rights since she was elected as the first female president in the history of the nation.

Newspapers Are Paying it Forward During Tragedies With Pizza

The Boston Globe has just continued the tradition of looking out for fellow journalists in times of tragedy.

Following the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester on Saturday, the staff of the Manchester Evening News has been working round the clock to report the events as they unfold.

But do know [that] your newsroom colleagues here in Chicago and across the country stand in awe of your tenacious coverage. You make us all proud as journalists. Mom Who Attended Every Class With Quadriplegic Son Gets Honorary MBA

After Marty O’Connor became a quadriplegic from falling down the stairs some years ago, he knew he wanted to go back to school and get some direction in his life – but he had one problem: he couldn’t hold a pencil.

That’s when his mother Judy stepped in.

Judy had been living in Florida as a retired school teacher when her son said that he wanted to get his MBA from Chapman University. She then moved to Los Angeles so she could help Marty with his classwork and notes.

Then on Saturday, she was surprised with an honorary MBA of her own in recognition of her diligence. The surprise was originally suggested by Marty, but the school board was more than happy to oblige.

As she wheeled her son across the stage for the graduation ceremony, the announcer pulled Judy up to the podium for the gift. Shocked, the mother tearfully accepted the degree in front of a standing ovation.

Homeless Man Who Became Hero in Manchester Bombing Rewarded With Housing

Stephen Jones has been hailed as a homeless hero after he came to the aid of people during the Manchester bombing on Monday – and now he is being rewarded for his kindness.

Stephen and his friend Chris Parker – who is also homeless – were sleeping on the streets in northwest Manchester near the local arena during an Ariana Grande concert when they heard an explosion. They rushed towards the sound of the chaos and found dozens of parents and children running out of the building, many of which were injured. As they went further into the chaos, they saw the full extent of the blast.

Stephen and Chris got to work, helping the injured away from the building and pulling bits of debris from people’s wounds. They kept a woman’s legs elevated so she wouldn’t bleed out, and comforted some of the children as they recovered from the blast or looked for their parents.

After they were interviewed over the events of the evening, viewers were touched by the compassion showed by the two friends. One Manchester local, Diane Moore, set up a Just Giving crowdfunding page that has already raised $30,000 to buy permanent housing for the homeless men.

David Sullivan, the co-chairman of English Premier League club West Ham United took to social media to find the homeless heroes and offer them 6 months free rent to help them get back on their feet. Sullivan and his son have since found Stephen and assisted him in getting his life in order.

“Dave and myself were both hugely impressed by the bravery shown by Steve, the emergency services and all those who rushed to the aid of those affected by the Manchester attack,” said Sullivan in a statement. “This was a terrible incident, but the response of the people of Manchester has been one of bravery, togetherness and resilience – the hallmarks of what makes Britain such a fantastic place.

“Steve was just one of hundreds of people who forgot about their own safety and rushed to the aid of others, and we were both moved by his story.”

“We are just trying to work out with a charity in Manchester how we pay for the accommodation for six months and give him some money for clothes and other essentials to give him as chance of getting a job and a normal life.”

College Kids Knock on Every Single Dorm Door for Special Cause

Two college students were inspired to save lives – and they acted on that inspiration just by knocking on every single door of their campus and asking for quarters.

Jesse Richards and Mark Schussler are both juniors at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. Last month, the students made a bet based on a game – the loser of the bet would have to knock on all 700 campus dorm rooms and ask for one quarter from each student.

When Richards lost the game, he figured he would just use all of the quarters he collected to pay off a traffic ticket. He changed his mind, however, when he saw Ben Stiller’s involvement with the Love Army For Somalia campaign.

RELATEDCelebs On Social Media Raise Over $1.5M for Somalian Famine

The campaign started as a two-minute video to raise awareness for the famine that is currently damaging the country of Somalia. The initiative then snowballed into an international humanitarian effort that has since recruited an airline, dozens of celebrities, several nonprofits, and almost $3 million in crowdfunding.

Richards and Schussler wanted to contribute to the fund (instead of paying off some lousy traffic ticket), so they hit the campus streets. After spending hours pounding pavement and asking hundreds of students for their spare change, the juniors finally tallied up their donations to a surprising sum of $253.

The students created a video of their exploits, highlighting how a community can help simply by coming together. When they published it on social media, they were delighted to see that Hollywood’s very own Ben Stiller had retweeted the video.

“It’s so cool that Ben Stiller actually watched our video,” says Richards.

It’s not hard to see why Stiller did indulge in the clip to begin with; the inspiring footage is a prime example of how everyone can make a change – even if it is just by giving quarters.

Woman Goes From Homelessness to Graduating Harvard

If you’re ever feeling dismal about your own circumstances, just take a little bit of inspiration from Norma Heath.

After losing her job several years ago, Norma became depressed and entered a downward spiral that left her homeless and drug addicted without any stability to finish school.

But then her prospects changed two years ago when she found Rosie’s Place – a women’s shelter in Boston, Massachusetts.

There, Norma received counseling and treatment, but what motivated her the most was when the volunteers asked her to write down her goals. Her list consisted of a handful of small things – like regularly attending doctor’s appointments and staying away from bad influences, etc. – but at the top of the list was her ultimate dream: to graduate from Harvard University.

Then, earlier this week, the 51-year-old woman fulfilled that dream and graduated from the Ivy League school with a degree in psychology.

“Like some days, you feel like giving up,” Norma told WCVB. “[But] people around us are going to be our cheerleaders. If I can do it, then you can do it.”

Man Places Bouquets of Flowers in Trash Cans for Stressed New Yorkers

One man’s trash can is another man’s vase.

That’s especially true for Lewis Miller – a floral designer based out of New York City.

Miller and his staff have taken to arranging and creating beautiful blossoming bouquets of flowers inside of neighborhood trash cans.

The floral team is constantly scouting the streets of the Big Apple, looking for ideal trash cans to host their flower bunches.

All of the bouquets are bought and paid for by Miller as his “labor of love” to the Burroughs. They are also presented with a spray painted “LMD x NYC” tag so pedestrians can find photos of the blossoms on Instagram. “LMD”, of course, stands for Lewis Miller Design.

“They’re our flowers to New York. That’s really the message — to gift flowers to New Yorkers for no other reason than to make them smile,” the company’s project director told TODAY. “If they’re really early risers and they come while we’re making them, they ask us what it’s for. Did You Know Breathing Deeply Can Boost Your Empathy?

Want to efficiently put yourself in someone else’s shoes? Try taking a deep breath.

That’s because this new study has found that people who are better at being more physically aware of themselves through meditation or mindfulness are more empathetic and understanding of others.

According to these researchers from the Department of Psychology at Cambridge University, the process of breathing deeply and bringing awareness to the body is called a “state of interoception”. Their published study shows that people who induce interoceptive states are more empathetic than those who aren’t as aware of their internal functioning.

RELATEDMeditation and Music May Reverse Early Memory Loss in Adults

This keen sense of social understanding, also known as the “Theory of Mind”, is the individual’s ability to hypothesize other people’s feelings, patterns, emotions, and reasoning, which the research team believes to be an improved byproduct of having heightened interoceptive abilities.

The researchers examined their claim by hosting a study composed of 72 different participants. To gauge their interoceptive abilities, the researchers asked participants to count their own heartbeats during an allotted amount of time. The team then measured the participants’ actual heartbeats in comparison to what the participants counted; those who had more accurate counts were considered more interoceptive.

The study group then showed the participants videos of events and occasions with multiple-choice answers. Some of the clips showed people’s faces with questions like “How is Lucy feeling?” – while other clips featured more factual questions like “Does the weather seem chilly in this footage?”

CHECK OUT: A Bolt of Insight Saved Him From Suicide; Now He’s Saving Kids in East L.A. With Meditation

The results of the test showed that the participants with better interoceptive abilities were better at answering questions about people’s emotions than those who were not as interoceptive.

So maybe next time you’re puzzling over the emotional dilemmas of your friends and family, close your eyes and take a breath before jumping to conclusions.

Woman Loses 40 Pounds so She Can Donate Kidney to Ailing Facebook Friend

Being fat may be harmful to a person’s own health – but being overweight doesn’t usually threaten the life of your friend as well.

Except that is the exact situation in which this 33-year-old restaurant worker found herself.

Earlier last year, Rebekah Ceidro was browsing Facebook when she saw a post by her friend and former coworker Chris Moore. Moore explained how he suffered from chronic kidney disease for his entire life. Then at 30 years old, he was told by his doctors that he would need either a kidney transplant or dialysis – or else he would die.

WATCHBoy Throws Opening Pitch at Baseball Game 1 Year After Double Hand Transplant

Ceidro sympathized with her friend and reached out over social media to see if they were the same blood type. When they matched, Ceidro went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to investigate the process further.

Unfortunately, doctors informed her that Ceidro’s body mass index was too high to be a donor.

“Admittedly, I was really angry that two individual surgeons would have the audacity to say such a thing, but they were right,” Ceidro told TODAY. “My actual thought was, ‘I’m too fat to save my friend’s life.’ And that sucked, but that’s at least something you can change.”

Ceidro measured in a five feet seven inches tall, and 213 pounds. In order to be Moore’s donor, she would have to lose at least 15 pounds.

RELATED69-Year-old Gives Up Liver Transplant To Save Stranger’s Life

That’s when the donor-to-be really got to work.

Not long after she started exercising, Ceidro started running a 5K race every day. She then began undergoing a rigorous fitness routine complete with weight training and nutritional apps on her phone.

Then in the first week of May, Ceidro completed the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon with a running time of 3 hours and 14 minutes – and a weight that was 40 pounds lighter than when she started.

Ceidro and Moore will be going under the knife for the transplant in the coming months, which will hopefully put an end to Moore’s kidney struggles for good.

This fifth grader may be blind, but he loves playing video games.

Because of Hibiki’s visual impairment, he can only play certain games that utilize sound as an indicator of what’s happening. His favorite games are Nintendo’s four installments of the Rhythm Tengoku series.

That’s why Hibiki’s dad helped him to write a letter to Nintendo, politely thanking them for their groundbreaking work – and asking if they could make more Tengoku games.
