Villagers have knitted speed cameras and life-sized traffic cops to fake-out reckless motorists, in a bid to slow down drivers.

The locals in Fillongley, Warwickshire, dressed the mannequins in high-visibility vests to look like traffic cops in a crafty bid to cut down on accidents.

Members of the town’s Knit and Natter group created the realistic cameras and mannequins after a spate of crashes along the villages main street.

The group’s latest recruit is a knitted officer stationed beneath a 30mph sign, complete with a mock speed gun aimed at oncoming traffic.

And locals believe the effort is working with many drivers falling for the mock speed cameras.

Heather Badham, the town’s councillor/mayor, said their realistic creations have been faking out drivers all week since they were installed on October 13 following four months of preparation.

“It has had a massive impact,” said the 58-year-old.

“90% of the accidents are caused by people coming down the Nuneaton road, not seeing the signs and then hitting someone.

“Since putting these up, we’ve been chuckling as people saw the man and thought he was real. You could see the brake lights coming on.

“They don’t take notice of the flashing 30 sign and go too fast—but they see the cameras and slow down.

“It probably did surprise a lot of people.”

Official figures show there’s been 11 accidents in four years along the Nuneaton Road junction, which is steps away from a primary school.

“I think it’s a really good initiative,” said 42-year-old Tom Docker, who believes the creations provide a solid deterrence to speeding motorists.

“I certainly did a double take when I saw the one with the camera. I couldn’t believe it.

“They’re very effective, well-made and get people talking.

“It speaks to the creativity of the local community: Anything like this is brilliant.”
