Watch Residents Rush to Save Citizen Trapped in Burning Bus

When a city bus suddenly caught on fire last Wednesday, nearby pedestrians wasted no time in rushing to the rescue of those caught on board.

The Yibing City bus, which was in the Sichuan Province, suddenly caught fire and trapped an elderly passenger inside.

Onlookers immediately broke the windows and started attacking the blaze with water and fire extinguishers. One local shop owner was seen on CCTV footage rushing onto the bus and pulling the passenger to safety outside the bus.

Within two minutes, the crowd had extinguished the fire.

Thanks to the quick actions of the spectators, there were no casualties from the blaze.

“Everyone would do the same as what I did under such circumstances. If I were trapped on the bus, other people will do the same thing to save me. It’s normal,” said heroic shop owner Pan Haifeng, according to CCTV Plus.

South and North Korea Meet For Peace Talks, Already Lifting Travel Bans

In what looks like a revival of South Korea’s “Sunshine Policy” of the late 1990s, North Korea has joined talks that could lead to peaceful relations between the two familial foes.

Delegates from North and South Korea announced in a joint statement that they had met for peace talks, for the first time in two years, in order “to relieve military tensions” between the two countries.

Meeting in the Demilitarized Zone just north of the de facto border between North and South Korea, the delegates reportedly discussed the northern nation’s participation in the Winter Olympic Games, which are to be held in Pyeongchang come February.

North Korea will be sending “as many athletes as possible” to attend the games, as well as a high-level group of delegates, members of the press, cheerleaders, and artists.

RELATEDAfter Korean War Monument is Vandalized in NJ, a South Korean Town Donates to Repair it

The peace talks went so well in the Panmunjoma village, the nations even discussed temporarily lifting their travel bans for the Lunar New Year so families who are separated by the tense border can temporarily reunite for the holiday. The sanctions would also be lifted in order to allow North Korean citizens to attend the Olympics.

While Southern delegates mentioned their intention to discuss denuclearization of the North, the other side said such discussions would only dampen progress. But most agree the talks were positive “baby steps” toward the two nations’ meeting further on serious issues in the future.

Ban on Plastic Microbeads Finally Launched in the UK

The UK government has just joined the ranks of countries and organizations that have banned the use of plastic microbeads from being used in cosmetics.

Microbeads, which are made from ground plastic pellets like those above, are used in products ranging from facial scrubs to toothpaste. They don’t break down in water treatment plants and, though they’re not toxic, harmful chemicals can stick to the microbeads and can be eaten by marine life. The contamination is then passed up the food chain — even to humans who eat seafood.

RELATEDHow Big Chains From Walmart to H&M Are Cleaning Up Chemicals

In addition to dozens of cosmetic companies pledging to ban the use of microbeads from their products, the USA passed legislation that prohibited the manufacturing and sale of microbead products in 2015.

The UK’s ban, which was originally passed in 2016, will initially prohibit the manufacturing of microbead products, while a ban on product sales will go into full effect in July.

“The world’s oceans are some of our most valuable natural assets and I am determined we act now to tackle the plastic that devastates our precious marine life,” said the UK’s environmental minister Thérèse Coffey, according to the Guardian. “Now we have reached this important milestone, we will explore how we can build on our world-leading ban and tackle other forms of plastic waste.”

Watch Whale Reportedly Protect Diver From Nearby Shark

A whale’s peculiar behavior towards a snorkeler earlier this week offered protection from a tiger shark that was reportedly swimming nearby.

63-year-old biologist Nan Hauser was observing a pair of humpback whales off the coast of Rarotonga, in the Cook Islands when one of the massive mammals started exhibiting some peculiar behavior.

For ten minutes, the whale kept persistently nudging Hauser along with its nose and attempting to tuck her under its pectoral fins. At one point, the creature even pushed the diver onto its head and out of the water.

WATCHBaby Deer Refused To Leave Side of Man Who Rescued It

Hauser, who has been studying and swimming with whales for the last 28 years, says that she has never experienced such strange interactions.

The biologist also says that if the whale kept approaching her, she was afraid that its speed and weight would break her bones and rupture her organs. Then, she spotted the 15-foot tiger shark that was swimming nearby.

Though the shark is not shown in Hauser’s video, local fishermen and divers have often seen the same shark swimming in the area. Hauser herself thought that the shark was just another whale until she saw its tale moving from side to side, rather than up and down.

RELATEDHummingbird Refuses to Leave the Dog Who Saved Her Life

Hauser says that the encounter could be evidence that whales are altruistic animals that feel compelled to save smaller creatures.

“I wasn’t sure what the whale was up to when he approached me, and it didn’t stop pushing me around for over 10 minutes. It seemed like hours. I was a bit bruised up,” Hauser told the Independent.

“There is a published scientific paper about humpbacks protecting other species of animals, by Robert Pitman. For instance, they hide seals under their pectoral fins to protect them from killer whales. They truly display altruism – sometimes at the risk of losing their own lives,” she says.

There’s no question that this is what Skipper is meant to do, but it’s not what he was born doing.

Before Skipper worked at the airport, he was a lonely stray who was found living on the streets of Michigan.

After Skipper was rescued, he started to training to become a sniffer dog.

Sarah Silverman Befriends Troll Who Insulted Her and Pays For His Medical Treatment

While Sarah Silverman is a comedian renowned for being unafraid of vulgarity, she recently showed her soft side to a Twitter user who insulted her over her politics.

Silverman originally tweeted that she was open to having a discussion with Donald Trump supporters about their differing political views on social media, should the opportunity arise; but despite her polite wording in the post, a Twitter user named Jeremy Jamrozy called Silverman a sexist slur.

Instead of responding in kind, however, Silverman looked at the man’s other posts and saw that he was a man suffering from difficult circumstances.

MOREBill Murray Delights Us Again By Buying Bluegrass Concert Tickets For Everyone In Line

She then wrote to Jamrozy saying: “I believe in you. I read ur timeline & I see what ur doing & your rage is thinly veiled pain. But u know that. I know this feeling. Ps My back f***ing sux too. See what happens when u choose love. I see it in you.”

The two started discussing their problems until Jamrozy apologized to Silverman for his behavior.

“Don’t give up on yourself,” the comedian responded. “Be brave enough to risk getting burned. It’s what happens when u fight for yourself. But it’s worth it. I promise.”

Silverman finished the heartwarming exchange by asking her 12.3 million Twitter followers if they knew of a doctor in the San Antonio area who could help Jamrozy with his back pain. Not only that, but she also told Jamrozy that she would pay for his medical treatment.

“I was once a giving and nice person, but too many things destroyed that and I became bitter and hateful,” Jamrozy said. “Then Sarah showed me the way. Don’t get me wrong, I still got a long way to go, but it’s a start.”

Instead of Trashing Groceries During Cooler Malfunction, Store Donates 35,000 Pounds of Food

While this grocery store could have simply trashed all of the food in their coolers during a refrigerator malfunction, they donated all 35,000 pounds of their perishable goodies to charity instead.

The Trader Joe’s of Kalamazoo, Michigan experienced some technical difficulties in their cooling system on Wednesday. Most businesses in the food industry – if faced with the same dilemma – would simply call a mechanic and attempt to save the food before it all goes bad and ends up in the garbage.

Trader Joe’s policy, however, requires their stores to donate all of their perishables to charity. The groceries from last week’s malfunction were donated to Kalamazoo Gospel Mission: a local shelter that serves over 600 meals to the city’s homeless every day.

Though 95% of their food is donated, the ministry says that the Trader Joe’s donation is the single largest contribution that they have ever received.

Greg Weaver, Director of Food Service at the mission, told WXMI. “They called us and we were able to mobilize a team within an hour that consisted of staff and volunteers.”

“They just really exemplified a culture of generosity and we’re just so thankful for them,” he added.

Record Low Number of Police Officers Killed in 2017

Thanks to a number of improved safety measures, fewer and fewer American law enforcement officers are being slain in the line of duty.

According to new data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 2017 experienced the second lowest amount of officers killed in the line of duty in over 50 years.

The research states that only 128 police officers died while on the job last year – which is a 10% drop from 2016. Over the course of the last five decades, the only other year that experienced fewer deaths was 2013 with 116 officers.

RELATEDThis Simple Self-Defense Program is Halting Sexual Assault Rates in Their Tracks

Since the majority of these casualties were reportedly caused by car collisions, analysts guess that the drop in deaths is due to improved legislation that demands drivers to change lanes for police cars with their lights on.

Other causes for the decline may be thanks to the use of more bulletproof vests, improved community relationships, and better training.

Craig Floyd, president and chief executive of the fund, told USA Today: “In my 33 years doing this, I’ve never seen the amount of awareness given to officer safety and wellness. That’s definitely been paying off and will continue to help make law enforcement a significantly safer profession.”

Roommate’s Prank is Called the Funniest Tweet of All Time

People were calling it the best Twitter post of all time.

@Deno_Tron, who describes himself a stand-up comedian earned a quarter million Likes for his hilarious tweet after he pranked his roommate.

The Italian from Brooklyn wrote that he had been asked by his roomie to clean up a bit before he arrived back home with a date.

We don’t know if Deno had any time to clean up, because he got busy creating a tabletop shrine to Princess Diana, instead. And he placed it in Thom’s bedroom.

Encircling several lit candles, he arranged three framed photographs of Lady Di adorned with hearts—and added a small vase of flowers for that daily-tended look.

He even printed out a sign that read “Thom and Diana, Lovers Seperated by Time and Circumstance”.

From among more than one thousand comments on the post, fans expressed their awe for this guy’s ability to win the day and make us laugh. Almost a third toasted his choice of Comic Sans font.

China is Building Another Enormous Floating Solar Farm on Top of Abandoned Coal Mine

An old collapsed coal mine in China is being given new life as the location of the world’s largest floating solar farm.

The solar farm, which is being built in Huainan, takes the record-breaking title from another solar farm within the city that currently generates 40 megawatts. The new one will provide electricity for 94,000 homes, nearly quadrupling capacity to 150-mw.

The $151 million facility is being built atop a lake that sprang up over a collapsed coal mine. Construction began in July and is expected to be finished in May 2018.

Lucky Break: Mother of Two Wins $5M on Ticket She Bought By Mistake

Thanks to a simple mistake, a New Jersey mother has just won a $5 million lottery jackpot.

46-year-old Oksana Zaharov was shopping at a convenience store in Manhattan when she asked to buy a $1 scratch-off ticket form the clerk. Instead, he gave her a $10 Set For Life ticket.

“When the clerk handed me the wrong ticket, I felt bad so I decided to just go ahead and buy it,” Zaharov said in a release from the New York Lottery. “I actually used the ticket as a bookmark for a couple of weeks before I decided to scratch it.”

When she did finally scratch the ticket, she found that she had won the jackpot.

“I never win anything,” she said. “I was sure the ticket was fake.”

Zaharov is now set to receive the winnings in 19 installments of $172,068 after taxes for the next 20 years. Though the Jersey mother said that she would like to treat her two kids to a Caribbean vacation, she plans on saving the money so she can treat the youngsters to a loan-free college education once they grow up.

In Bid to Combat Obesity, a Simple Patch Turns Energy-storing Fats into Energy-burning Fats

A new approach to reducing bulging tummy fats has shown promise in laboratory trials. The solution aims to “use a person’s own body fats to burn more energy, which is a natural process in babies.”

Combining a new way to deliver medicine, via a micro-needle patch, with drugs that are known to turn energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, this innovative approach developed by scientists from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) reduced weight gain in mice on a high fat diet and their fat mass by more than 30% over four weeks.

The new type of skin patch contains hundreds of micro-needles, each thinner than a human hair, which are loaded with the drug Beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist or another drug called thyroid hormone T3 triiodothyronine.

When the patch is pressed into the skin for about two minutes, these micro-needles become embedded in the skin and detach from the patch, which can then be removed.

RELATEDWoman Can Smell Parkinson’s Disease, May Lead To Breakthrough For Detection

As the needles degrade, the drug molecules then slowly diffuse to the energy-storing white fat underneath the skin layer, turning them into energy-burning brown fats.

Brown fats are found in babies and they help to keep the baby warm by burning energy. As humans grow older, the amount of brown fats lessens and is replaced with visceral white fats.

Published in the journal Small Methods recently by NTU Professor Chen Peng and Assistant Professor Xu Chenjie, this approach could help to address the worldwide obesity problem without resorting to surgical operations or oral medication which could require large dosages and could have serious side effects.

LOOKThis Font is Designed Specifically For Dyslexia – and it Really Works

“With the embedded micro-needles in the skin of the mice, the surrounding fats started browning in five days, which helped to increase the energy expenditure of the mice, leading to a reduction in body fat gain,” said Xu, who focuses on research in drug delivery systems.

“The amount of drugs we used in the patch is much less than those used in oral medication or an injected dose. This lowers the drug ingredient costs while our slow-release design minimizes its side effects,” said Xu.

Obesity which results from an excessive accumulation of fat is a major health risk factor for various diseases, including heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.9 billion adults in the world are overweight in 2016 with 650 million of them being obese.

“What we aim to develop is a painless patch that everyone could use easily, is unobtrusive and yet affordable,” said Chen, a biotechnology expert who researches obesity.

CHECK OUT: Learn How to Spend Time Alone So You Can Unlock Your Creativity

Under the two scientists’ guidance at NTU’s School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, research fellow Dr Aung Than conducted experiments which showed that the patch could suppress weight gain in mice that were fed a high fat diet and reduce their fat mass by over 30%, over a period of four weeks.

The treated mice also had significantly lower blood cholesterol and fatty acids levels compared to the untreated mice.

Being able to deliver the drug directly to the site of action is a major reason why it is less likely to have side effects than orally delivered medication.

The team estimates that their prototype patch had a material cost of about S$5 (US$3.50) to make, which contains beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist combined with Hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the human body and commonly used in products like skin moisturizers.

MOREFrom Terrifying to Terrific – Man Redesigns MRI Machine to Delight Children Instead of Scare Them

Beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist is a drug approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration and is used to treat overactive bladders, while T3 triiodothyronine is a thyroid hormone commonly used for medication for an underactive thyroid gland.

Both have been shown in other research studies to be able to turn white fats brown, but their use in reducing weight gain is hampered by potentially serious side-effects and drug accumulation in non-targeted tissues if conventional drug delivery routes were used, such as through oral intake.

NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Associate Professor Melvin Leow, who was not affiliated with this study, said it is exciting to be able to tackle obesity via the browning of white fat, and the results were promising.

“These data should encourage Phase I Clinical studies in humans to translate these basic science findings to the bedside, with the hope that these microneedle patches may be developed into an established cost-effective modality for the prevention or treatment of obesity in the near future,” added Leow, an endocrinologist.

Since the publication of the paper, the team has received keen interest from biotechnology companies and is looking to partner clinician scientists to further their research.

Woman Meets Homeless Family Living in a Broken Bus, So She Comes Back With a House

Olivia, Eric, and their three daughters — an infant, toddler and 5-year-old — were living in a partially converted school bus. The family of five had been moving across the U.S. when they broke down in Greeley, Colorado.

Broke and homeless, Olivia was certain this holiday season would be nonexistent for her kids.

Meanwhile, Virginia Finch and her daughters were preparing Thanksgiving meals for the homeless. They heard about a family living behind the nearby gas station and went to deliver the food to them.

It was Olivia and her brood.

Finch and her daughters listened to their heartbreaking story. The second they got home, they began putting a plan in place for what they could do for the troubled family. With the cold season approaching, the Finch family could not bear to think of the babies suffering in the cold.

“There’s no way I’m going to leave a baby with no crib for a bed on Christmas,” Finch thought to herself.

That’s when she thought of the second house that her family was preparing to sell or rent. She returned to Olivia with a proposition, and at first, the struggling mom of three thought it was some kind of cruel joke: Finch asked the homeless family if they would like to live in the house.
