Strangers Save Elderly Resident From Having to Leave Nursing Home

Carrie Lou-Go Fund Me

Carrie Lou Rausch has lived in the same nursing home for the last three years. The money she received from selling her childhood home has been financing her stay thus far – at least until the funds recently started to run out.

Since the assisted living facility in Columbus, Ohio doesn’t accept Medicaid, Carrie Lou has been paying out of pocket for her stay. Though she could have moved in to a different facility, she was already familiar with the establishment because of her frequent visits to family members in the past.

But then Carrie Lou was saved thanks to the massive success of a GoFundMe page created by her daughter Susan Hatfield.

The page caught the attention of a local television station that reported the story. Hundreds of donors from 22 different states contributed a total of $56,000 – $16,000 more than their goal. The amount raised will be able to pay for one more year at the home.

“She’s been quite shocked at [the whole thing] and can’t figure why anyone would ever be enamored by her,” Carrie Lou’s grandson Christopher Smith told the Good News Network. “That’s just the way Grandma is though. My family is all still shaking our collective heads though at the generosity of strangers.”

“My whole family and I are so incredibly grateful for the support and generosity of all those who have allowed us to reach and exceed our goal,” wrote Susan. “What an amazing testament to the existence of basic human kindness in a time when it sometimes seems in short supply.”

“It’s certainly not out of the question that Mom has more than one active year left in her amazing life, and the additional funds will remain available for expenses into the following year. As explained in the original description, any unused funds will be donated to her church, of which she has been a lifelong member.”

Some of the crowdfunding page’s visitors asked why Carrie Lou didn’t just move back in with her daughter, but Susan explained that the family doesn’t have the resources to provide continuous care. Plus, she doesn’t want to inflict devastation on her mother by making her move from a place she’s already familiar with.

College Students Dress as Princesses to Visit Sick Kids

Disney Princess and Sick Child-Youtube

These college students may not be actual Disney princesses, but the sick children whom they visit believe otherwise.

A Moment In Magic is a nonprofit made up of 40 college student volunteers who dress up as famous female protagonists and raise the spirits of pediatric ward patients. Since they started in 2015, the group has visited over 5,000 children.

Kylee McGrane got the idea for the project when she was watching Frozen as a sophomore on winter break with her family. She noticed that her and her friend Maggie McAndrew bore a striking resemblance to the movie’s lead characters Anna and Elsa. That’s when they figured they could fulfill their passion for helping people by impersonating the beloved Disney heroes.

The foundation, since they’re currently only based at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx, New York, is working on expanding the outreach work to other colleges and states, as well as recruiting more volunteers.

“We’ve never said no to a visit, so any time a parent or a patient or a hospital reaches out to us, we do whatever we can to make it happen, whether it’s an in-person visit or a Skype visit,”  McGrane told TODAY Parents. “So to be adopted by other colleges and have other chapters is our dream — so that any kid anywhere in the country can experience an in-person visit from a princess if they ask.”

Café Will Give Free Meals to People Willing to Exercise

Exercise at the Gym-CC Abdullah AL-Naser

As a way of encouraging office workers to break their sedentary work routine, this café is now accepting exercise as payment for healthy meals.

The Run For Your Bun Café inside the David Lloyd Club in London, England, lets participants complete a six-minute intensive micro workout in exchange for a free meal off of their menu. The restaurant was open over the weekend to members of the public with reservations.

The high-intensity interval training consists of one-minute on a rowing machine, one minute on a spin bike, one minute on a treadmill, followed by 60-seconds of sit-ups, bodyweight squats and lunges, with 30-second rest periods between each exercise.

RELATEDCyclists Volunteer to Give Nature Rides to Wheelchair Bound

Though it may not seem like a lot of work, the calories replaced by the lighter, healthier meals are no where near the same amount that is burned during the routine. Plus, the gym wants to encourage their guests to understand the benefits of balancing healthy diets and exercise rather than exercising just to “cancel out” unhealthy meals.

“According to our research British office workers spend almost 90% of the working day sat down being inactive and invariably eating lunch at their desks ― an issue compounded by the huge popularity and convenience of food and shopping delivery apps,” Elaine Denton, a health and fitness expert from David Lloyd Clubs said in a statement. “We want to remind workers of the importance of being active at work and moving around more.”

It’s unclear how often the gym will open their meal exchange program to the public, however they hope to inspire more gyms to do the same.

Abused Family Builds Their Own Home Using Youtube Videos

Brookins Family-Youtube

Cara Brookins and her four children had had a difficult couple of years since escaping from two terrible marriages – but then the family turned their lives around by building their own dream home from scratch.

The 45-year-old mother was put to the test when her first husband’s mental health dissolved into paranoid schizophrenia. Even after the divorce, he continued to harass and scare the family. Her second husband, whom she thought to be a more stable man, became increasingly violent and abusive.

Cara moved into a tiny home in Little Rock, Arkansas with her kids, ages 2, 11, 15, and 17. Though it was small, they didn’t have the money for a larger home. They did, however, have the money to build a house themselves.

RELATEDThis Moving Company Helps Women Leave Abusive Homes At No Cost

Struck by inspiration, Cara bought one acre of land and all the supplies necessary to build a five-person house. They learned about construction the only way they could afford: by watching YouTube videos.

The family started building in 2008, and for 9 long months, the team worked tirelessly on their future home. During the day, the kids went to school and Cara worked as a computer analyst. When they all returned home, they would work until bed time, sometimes by the light of car headlights.

“They were all in,” Brookins proudly told CBS News. “My biggest fear was that my teenagers would wake up and say, ‘No, I’m not doing this.’ And it never happened. It was the first time they had felt any sort of power, any sort of control over their lives. And they knew how much they needed it.”

Cara’s book, Rise: How a Home Built a Family, details her family’s struggles and perseverance. It will be released on January 24th.

Citizens Burst Into Tears When Michelle Obama Shows Up During Goodbye Recordings For Her

Michelle Obama surprises Fallon guest

Jimmy Fallon set up a super sweet prank for Americans who came by the NBC studios to record goodbye messages to Michelle Obama. What they didn’t know was that she was waiting to surprise them from behind a curtain.

From being a great role model, to inspiring one dad’s kids to eat salads, to making us laugh on the Tonight Show performing the Evolution of Mom Dancing; the First Lady has given Americans many reasons to love her.

The folks at NBC’s Tonight Show gave regular Americans a chance to express what she has meant to them by recording a video message saying goodbye to Mrs. Obama. They faced a portrait of Michelle, and when they finished their heartfelt farewells, they were shocked to suddenly meet her face-to-face.

They’d seen her on TV, harvesting vegetables with local students in the new garden at the White House and dancing a jig with a 106-year-old woman, but when she suddenly walked up to them, it made many of them break down into tears.

Watch the video below to see their reactions as they are enfolded in Obama’s arms.

Praised by one man for focusing above all on ‘kindness’ and cheered by another fan for her sense of humor and Dougie dance moves, Michelle is also known for tackling tough issues.

For eight years the First Lady worked on two main issues — jobs and homes for veterans and their spouses, and child obesity with her promotion of healthier eating and her “Let’s Move” campaign. These efforts helped to cut veteran homelessness in half; brought new salad bars to thousands of schools; and coincided with childhood obesity rates dropping in many states.

Bushes Pen Touching Letter to Obama Sisters: We’ll be Rooting For You

Obama girls 2016 White House

When Malia and Sasha Obama first arrived at the White House, they got a personal tour—with a heap of encouragement—from sisters, Jenna and Barbara Bush, who had just spent eight years with their father in the Oval Office.

At the time, the Bush twins also penned a letter offering advice to the young Obama girls—and now, eight years later, they once again have reached out, this time offering heartfelt advice on the transition very few have ever made: moving from the White House to civilian life.

In their letter to Malia and Sasha, published Thursday in Time magazine, Barbara and Jenna reminisced about meeting the girls eight years ago and expressed admiration for how the two have matured.

“In eight years, you have done so much. Seen so much,” the Bush sisters wrote. “We have watched you grow from girls to impressive young women with grace and ease. And through it all you had each other. Just like we did.”

Organizations Learn Cheap Tattoo Removal to Help Inmates Get Jobs

Worker-Jails to Jobs

Each year, more than 800,000 people are released from federal and state prisons, and an estimated 22% – that’s 176,000 – have visible tattoos. Often, these tattoos—many of which are anti-social or gang-related—prevent previously incarcerated individuals from finding a job. As a result, they’re likely to end up right back in prison, costing state and federal governments billions of dollars each year, not to mention the price of productive lives lost.

Although many of those leaving prison would like a fresh start tattoo-free, getting the ink removed is prohibitively expensive. That’s where San Francisco Bay Area based nonprofit Jails to Jobs comes in.

The organization has created a training program to teach medical professionals, tattoo artists, nonprofit organizations, correctional facilities, and governments how to create a free or low-cost tattoo removal program to serve the communities in which they operate.

MOREAustralian Tattoo Artist Offers to Cover Up Self-Harm Scars For Free

“We see that as many as four out of five previously incarcerated individuals who successfully find a job do not return to prison,” said Mark Drevno, founder and executive director of Jails to Jobs. “Keeping someone out of prison costs much less than sending them back, yet we as a nation, have primarily focused on trying to fix overcrowded prisons. A better, more sustainable approach is to help individuals remove visible anti-social or gang-related tattoos, get jobs and turn their lives around.”

The program is not just limited to those working with previously incarcerated and formerly gang-involved men and women. Victims of human trafficking are often tattooed with names, gang signs, or even barcodes. And those in abusive relationships are sometimes forcibly tattooed by their significant others.

RELATEDL.A. Sheriffs Offer Tattoo Removal to Inmates Who Want to Change Their Lives

This cheaper option of tattoo removal will give thousands of people the fresh start that they need.

“Many years ago, with a bit of trepidation, I hired a previously incarcerated formerly drug addicted homeless man as a sales rep for the company I owned,” Mark told Good News Network. “He turned out to be a very loyal employee and quite good at his job and made me realize that there must be countless people out there who’ve been in prison and just need someone to give them a chance to get their lives back together.”

“I never forgot that man. He – along with mostly my mother who was widowed at age 43 with nine children to raise and who spent the rest of her life working to serve disadvantaged people – were the inspirations behind the creation of Jails to Jobs.”

flap-shelled-turtle-cc-l-shyamal

In what is being called the “largest ever wildlife haul in the country”,  more than four tons of endangered turtles were rescued by police who busted a smuggling ring in India earlier this week.

6,430 freshwater flapshell turtles were discovered stuffed into 140 jute bags in Uttar Pradesh on the way to Southeast Asia.

“Wildlife authorities confirmed that this is the largest haul in the country’s wildlife history, both in terms of number and weight — 4.4 tonnes,” Arvind Chaturvedi, head of the state’s Special Task Force that rescued the turtles, told AFP.

Though flapshell turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act, thousands are smuggled out of the country every year. Their meat and shells typically sell for 1,000 to 8,000 rupees ($14 to $117), depending on the size.

Students Transform School Bus Into Gift for Teacher’s Developmentally Challenged Daughter

Before and After School Bus-Jessi Smith

12-year-old Gabrielle Howell is the beloved daughter of a high school teacher – so when all she wanted for Christmas was her own school bus for playtime, her mother’s students decided to rise to the occasion.

Diagnosed with a rare brain disorder known as bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia, which causes Gabrielle to mentally develop much slower than other children. Although she exhibits the mind of a 3-year-old, Gabby is still adored by all her mom’s students.

Teacher Amy Howell mentioned the unusual school bus gift request in passing to her health care class at Gallatin High School. One of the students, Jessica Smith, decided to investigate the possibility of actually finding a school bus for the family.

RELATEDTeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

Once she discovered a local bus for sale, Jessica created a GoFundMe campaign to cover its purchase and the costs for renovation. She next had the vehicle towed to the school’s football field where a team of volunteers worked every day to revitalize the shabby machine.

By the time Christmas Eve rolled around, the students – with a little help from Santa – had parked the bus in the Howell family’s yard. What was once a crumbling hunk of junk had become a cozy little clubhouse complete with chairs, art supplies, curtains, and carpeting. Gabby has reportedly barely left the sanctuary since its delivery on Christmas.

Jessica, meanwhile, reflected that she was just happy to help the teacher and her family.

“She really goes above and beyond every single day for her students. She stays after hours, she works through her lunch,” Jessica told Today. “[And Gabby] is so sweet and wants to give everybody hugs. She’s just friends with everybody.”

CVS is Now Offering Allergy Medication at 1/6th the Cost of the EpiPen

Epipen-CC GregFriese

Over 9,000 different CVS branches nationwide are now carrying generic versions of the Adrenaclick auto-injector, an allergy medication similar to the EpiPen currently marketed by Mylan, but at 1/6th of the cost.

Mylan has been criticized for hiking the price of the life-saving drug by 500% since 2007. Though Adrenaclick is not the same as Mylan’s EpiPen, patients may be able to access the generic dual pack at CVS for $109.99 – as opposed to the outrageous price of $600 – with permission and consultation from their doctors.

Over the past year, nearly 150,000 people signed on to a petition asking for a lower cost epinephrine auto-injector option and millions more were active on social media searching for a solution.

Student Invents Smart Gun that Could Prevent Hundreds of Accidents

Smart Gun-Youtube

This MIT student may only be 19 years old, but he’s working on a revolutionary project that could save hundreds of lives.

Kai Kloepfer is working on the prototype of a smart gun that can only be fired by the owner. Thousands of gun-related deaths in America are either from child accidents or suicides that are committed with firearms that don’t belong to them. Using fingerprint recognition similar to the iPhone, a smart gun would prevent anyone else but the intended user from firing the weapon.

The final prototype is designed to unlock in 0.5 seconds and relock even faster. The battery life will last for one year per single charge. The fingerprint authentication can also be programed to recognize multiple users.

RELATEDSimple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

“I started developing this technology at the age of 15 after I started to realize just how much of a problem we have with gun violence – and the lack of any feasible solution,” says Kai. “Therefore I have spent the last three years actively engaged in the smart firearm discussion as a public speaker, working with media and doing other outreach to help eliminate misunderstandings as well as to learn from my customers what they need in a smart gun.”

Kai operates his organization – known as BioFire – out of his parent’s house in Boulder, Colorado. He has received funding to develop the smart gun from Ron Conway, a “super angel” of Silicon Valley and an early investor in Facebook and Google.

“Kai is the Mark Zuckerberg of guns,” Conway said. “What Kai has done is used all of the latest technology available us to innovate a truly authenticated gun. You couldn’t do this five years ago.”

Heavy Rains and Snow Helping California Out of Drought

Lake Tahoe-CC Bill Strong

The years-long drought in California is finally coming to a close thanks to ongoing statewide torrential rainfall and snow.

In January 2016, 97% of the state was suffering from drought – one year later, 40% of California has emerged from the punishing weather conditions.

Lake Tahoe, the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada, has risen one foot since the New Year. That’s equal to about 33.6 billion gallons of water with more rain and snowfall expected in the coming weeks. The lakes levels had reportedly reached record lows amidst the drought a few years previously.

The rest of Northern California is apparently enjoying the heaviest snow its had in 6 years. The flood gates of the Sacramento River were reportedly opened for the first time in 12 years.

Southern California, while it is still technically in drought, is expected to be much less harsh as the relieving weather conditions continue.

Gov. Jerry Brown plans to elaborate on the state of drought emergency that he declared in 2014 after the wet season is over.

On January 4th, the couple was returning from a night out in Covent Garden, London when they missed their train home to Essex. The next train would not arrive for another four hours and the weather was brutally cold.

That’s when Charlotte heard a voice from behind her, saying “You can burrow my coat and duvet if you want? It’s a long wait and it’s freezing tonight.”

Charlotte asked her new friend if he would like to stay with her and her mother for the night, complete with a shave, a shower, and a hot meal. Though he was reluctant at first, her earnest tone finally convinced him.
