Discovery of New Avocado Types Could Lead to More Superfood Choices and Resilience

Scientists trudging through Nicaragua’s rainforest have identified a “hotbed” of avocado species diversity.

The fruit was first transported hundreds of miles to Central America from South America around 5,000 years ago, and the American researchers uncovered genetic traces of this ancient migration in the fruit’s DNA.

They suggest some of these species could aid in supply chain diversification, and boost sustainable agriculture and commercial varieties of the healthfood fruit.

The natural range of avocado trees extends from Mexico to Peru, but study leader archaeobotanist Kevin Wann says there is “a much wider breadth of avocado diversity that science had not yet documented.”

“We could potentially tap into this genetic diversity to conserve commercial avocado plants that are vulnerable to disease.”

Key to their discovery and to this evolutionary diversity was the human-caused migration of the fruit from south to north. For more than 10,000 years, humans in the region have coveted the plant’s fruit, whose yellowish-green flesh is packed with nutrients and fats.

As the seeds were dispersed throughout the humid lowlands of Central America, they hybridized with native plants, producing a diversity of avocado varieties.

Despite resembling the avocados found in humid regions such as Florida and the Caribbean, the local varieties are genetically distinct from the commercially-grown fruits found in guacamole.

As of 2024, 11 million metric tons of avocados were grown annually worldwide, but like the banana, the vast majority belong to a single variety: Hass. These large, long-lasting avocados are produced through clonal grafting, where a branch is taken off one Hass avocado tree and attached to another tree to bear the same exact fruit. As a result, most avocados in grocery stores are genetically indistinguishable.

That makes all Hass avocados vulnerable to the same threats, however, with a single disease or change in temperature or precipitation carrying the power to wipe out an entire population of Hass avocados.

Increasing the genetic diversity of avocados is crucial to protecting the multi-billion-dollar industry.

To that end, Wann, a doctoral student at Texas A&M University, examined DNA from avocado leaves collected in Nicaragua, Honduras, and southern Mexico. They also spoke with the farmers and gardeners to learn how they cultivate these local avocados.

Traditional agricultural practices have honed the region’s native avocado varieties, also known as “landraces,” for thousands of years. Locals confirmed that the lowland avocado landraces had not experienced root rot, the most common disease affecting commercial avocados.

The researchers extracted and analyzed DNA from 47 native avocado landraces, 32 of which came from Nicaragua. They then compared the DNA from the various landraces with previously published genetic data from more than 200 other avocado lineages.

The findings, published in the journal Plants People Planet, showed that the avocados sampled in the lowlands of Nicaragua were genetically tied to avocados found further south, including populations along the coast of Colombia, rather than north in Mexico.

This revealed that many local landraces in that part of Central America are planted from fruits originally grown in South America.

Mr. Wann believes the trove of avocado diversity preserved in Central America’s lowlands could help protect commercial avocados from the fate of other clonal crops such as bananas, which have been devastated by fungal pathogens in the past.

AVOCADO INTRIGUE:

The region’s local varieties are also adapted to warmer and wetter climates.

“Their high levels of genetic diversity makes them more prepared to face potential shifts in climate or diseases compared to the ones you’d buy at a supermarket.”

Across the world, agronomists and botanists—and even the odd entrepreneur—are seeking ways to bring greater variety to both staple and cash crops. Whether grains or coffee, the same benefits these native avocado landraces have over commercial ones can be found in other plants: heat-resistant coffee species, or drought tolerant sorghum.

Paralyzed Man Can Feed Himself and Pet His Dog Again Thanks to Double Neural Bypass Surgery

A man who was paralyzed from the chest down is now regaining hand and arm control thanks to a double neural bypass surgery—by using a computer to connect his brain with the nerves in his hand and arms.

Hardly doomed to becoming a wheeled internet node for the rest of his life, the man has continued to regain feeling and function that persists even when the computer is turned off.

The result speaks volumes about the potential for this technology to improve the lives of those suffering from paralysis in the US and abroad.

Such hope and progress unfortunately begins with tragedy and loss, in a very familiar way.

Keith Thomas from Massapequa was just hanging out next to the pool during the summer of 2020, when he decided to dive in “aggressively as usual.” The next thing he knew, he was in a helicopter being transported to the hospital.

Just 3 months after breaking his neck at the bottom of the swimming pool, Thomas was contacted by the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research asking if he were interested in enrolling in a 3-year medical trial for what they called double neural bypass surgery, with the paralyzed nervous system between the brain and the arms being that which is bypassed.

It uses electrodes implanted into Thomas’ brain to detect when he wants to move his arms. The signals are then routed to his arms and hands to move them. The “double” part refers to sensors embedded in his fingers which detect the presence and form of objects in his hands, performing another transfer of information to the brain via the electrodes.

Not only does it allow Thomas to move his arms and hands, feel the fur of his dog or the touch of his sister’s hands, but detect whether he’s holding a ball, a coffee cup, or an egg, and adjust pressure and control accordingly.

Training with the system for 35 weeks, the strength in his atrophied arms has increased: 86% in his right arm and 62% in his left, while also experiencing an increase in his range of motion. Having previously not been able to lift his hand above his neck, he can now scratch his nose and wipe his mouth. The progress was recently presented in a paper published in Nature.

ADVANCES IN REVERSING PARALYSIS: 

“For me this is an incredible moment,” said Professor Chad Bouton, leader of the team at Feinstein that developed the technology.

“For years, we have been wanting to really tackle the restoration of movement and the sense of touch and bring those together and we’ve also wanted to create lasting effects,” Bouton said in a video release. “I think we’re going to continue to see progress and I think it’ll be applicable to the millions of folks around the world who really need this technology.”

An interesting thing about the technological ensemble restoring Thomas’ capabilities of touch and movement is that it’s unclear just how much more he’ll be able to recover. Where will he be after another 35 weeks?

A Rich Rainfall is Set to End Mexico’s 6-Year Drought

According to current predictions, Mexico may be free from a multi-year drought at the end of its current rainy season.

Running from May to October, a wetter-than-normal El Niño phenomenon has led to rich rains across Mexico, from the drier north to the more humid south.

Dante Sinohé Hernández Padrón, a researcher with the National Water Commission (Conagua), said during the 40th Climate Perspectives Forum in May that there has been a 94% recovery from existing droughts across the country.

Droughts are measured in the country through a rating of D0 to D5. The vast majority of the country’s territory are D0, with patches of D1—a state of dryness preceding real drought, and smaller patches inside those D1 areas of D2.

Just before the 2025 rainy season, almost half of Mexico—596 municipalities or 46.5% of the country—fell into the D1 to D4 categories, according to Conagua.

As of June 15, only 2.4% of the territory was experiencing drought (D1-D4).

Only a tiny area of desert in Chihuahua State is experiencing severe drought, considered D3, and only where it touches against the US border.

In some of those really old countries: Greece, Turkey, China, history has a funny way of piling up and losing some of its intrigue.

Take this kitchen table for example—it’s actually a kind of diploma issued in the Qing Dynasty, but Mr. Xu of Anhui province didn’t know, even though he and his family had taken meals on it more times than he could count.

Going viral on mainland social media, Xu explained on the Chinese version of TikTok that he had never paid the plaque any mind; his parents were impressed by its sturdy timbers and repurposed it as a dining table at their home in this rural region of West China.

Painted red, the two words “Yuan Gong” had been carved into the surface and colored in gold. One day on a lark, Xu decided to research what the characters meant. He discovered that the plaque was an “honor board,” given to his great-great-grandfather Xu Yunli as a mark of distinction following his passage of the imperial examinations.

Originating in the Tang Dynasty of the 7th century, the state exam to enter the imperial bureaucracy was conserved through all subsequent dynasties. The rigorous academic pursuit at times allowed commoners to break through social hierarchies, and ensure at the best of times that a true meritocracy staffed imperial ministries with the best and brightest in the realm.

Yuan Gong translates roughly to “talent presented to the emperor,” and indicates that Xu Yunli placed sixth in the state examinations that year.

“I never imagined that the table our family had used for decades was actually my great-great-grandfather’s academic record,” Xu wrote.

Such honor boards, as one might imagine, were traditionally displayed above home doorways, in ancestral halls, or beside tombs, serving as enduring symbols of scholarly success and family prestige, writes Zoey Zhang at SCMP.

Such a piece of education history would in many countries render the object as state property, but under Chinese law, as long as historical relics of national importance were passed down through lawful family inheritance, they remain the private property of the family.

Xu insists he shall never part with his ancestor’s token of merit, and plans to put some money together to have the red lacquer and gold paint restored to the face.

This story attracted 10 million views on social media, Zhang wrote, who shared some of the comments.

From Arizona comes the story of a young man helping an elderly woman whose dementia had left her disoriented, wandering about in 103°F heat.

14-year-old Royal Cothrun was riding his bike down empty sidewalks through his home town of Gilbert when he spotted 75-year-old Theresa Morgan.

Hardly pounding the pavement in running gear, she was carrying a grocery bag in one arm and her purse in the other, seemingly confused and distressed

“I don’t even know, she just looked like something was wrong, so I started talking to her,” Cothrun told ABC News 15. 

It turns out that Morgan had been diagnosed with dementia just last year, and became confused attempting to walk home from the grocery store.

Cothrun saw she was sweating, and managed to convince her to follow him to the shade, where he then helped her to remember the phone number of her son, whom the young man called.

“It was just so lucky, so fortunate, that he ran across her, cared enough to stay with her, and take care of her,” said the son, Jeff, over the phone to ABC.

Paramedics arrived to treat Morgan for potential heat exhaustion, concluding the episode—all of which Cothrun captured on his Meta Glasses. His mother was understandably proud, when she found out what he’d done.

Off-duty North Texas Firefighter Saves 3 Children Trapped Under Boat on 4th of July

From the Dallas Morning News comes the story of a firefighter who went above and beyond the call of duty, even though he was off duty.

Out in the family boat on the 4th of July, Jason Horne rescued 3 drowning children trapped under a pontoon boat on Alvarado Lake, in Midlothian.

The paper referenced firefighters’ terminology for rescuing people: “making a grab,” before quoting Horne as admitting he had made the “grab of his career.”

And he wasn’t even wearing the uniform.

Horne recounted the story in an interview. He was on his boat spending time with his 12-year-old daughter on the lake when they saw another boat and a jet ski floating in the distance, with the pilot waving them down.

Then he realized there was a third boat nearby, one he hadn’t seen at first, but which was clearly the wrong side up. Sensing there was the need of a “grab” at hand, Horne told his daughter to sit tight, then jumped in the water and sawm over to the scene.

“The people were all yelling, ‘Our babies are under there,'” Horne recalled. “So, I went around to the side of the boat, dove underneath the boat.”

Two children were trapped underneath, and thankfully their guardians had remembered or insisted that they should wear life jackets. The first ‘grab’ was a boy, clearly dizzy, but breathing. The second was a girl who wasn’t. He pulled her up on top of the pontoon, hoisted himself up beside her, and began to perform chest compressions before hearing that there was a third child underneath as well.

He dove back into the water, without explaining to the Dallas Morning News whether the girl was breathing again, but he couldn’t locate a third child.

There’s only so many places one firefighter can be, but by then some Good Samaritans came by and helped find the third—another boy—who was also unresponsive.

“He had a bunch of ropes and stuff wrapped around him,” Horne said. “We were able to get him up on the front of that pontoon boat. I did CPR on that little boy up there on the pontoon boat for a few minutes while we were headed back to the boat ramp.”

By the time they reached the ramp, first responders were waiting for them, and rushed all 3 children to the hospital, where they recovered according to a news release by the Alvarado Fire Chief.

The family later reached out personally to their hero personally, though Horne insisted he is anything but, and that he “was just trying to help those people.”

New Species of Monkey Found in DR Congo Shows How Much There’s Left to Discover

When news reaches the public that a new species has been identified, the chances really are 9 times out of 10 that it’s some deep sea slug or a spider.

From the Congo comes the story of the exception—a new species of colobus monkey has been identified, becoming just the 5th such occasion in 75 years of research on the Colorful Continent.

The creature with black fur and an innocent face, also bears a striking set of orange lips.

Named Colobus congoensis and known locally as “Likweli” in its home of Lomami National Park, the monkey had lain hidden from our sight within this remote region of the Congo Basin despite decades of scientific exploration in Central Africa.

The mystery of this new species began with an unexpected sighting in 2008, when researchers captured a partially obscured photograph of the monkey. A decade later, researchers encountered the animal again and obtained a much clearer image. That discovery sparked further investigation into the elusive primate.

Now, new genetic, anatomical, and acoustic analyses have confirmed that the monkey represents a distinct evolutionary lineage that diverged from its closest known relative, the black colobus monkey, 4 to 5 million years ago

“This discovery is both exciting and deeply personal, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of my homeland and how much remains undocumented,” said Junior Amboko, a Congolese scientist and co-corresponding author of the findings in a statement.

NEW MONKEY SPECIES: This Monkey Was Already Endangered When Discovered in 2003–but is Now on the Up and Up

Smaller than related colobus monkeys—about 15 pounds—it is distinguished by sleek, light-reflecting fur and dramatic facial features created by long black facial hairs and large folded ears. White perianal markings further distinguish this species.

In a separate response to the BBC, Amboko said that the animal had a small range compared to other colobus monkeys, suggesting it could be already Endangered. In the statement, it’s detailed that between 2018 and 2022, researchers recorded 114 sightings across an estimated range of around 900 square miles.

“As part of our search, we interviewed people in 52 villages close to where the animals live. And only people in 8 villages [had ever seen] them.”

While the scientists’ official recommendation in their paper describing the monkey is that it should be listed as Endangered, the locals also told them that the monkey was a target of local indigenous hunters.

British Runner ‘Calls His Shot’ and Breaks World Record in the Mile–After it Stood for 27 Years

Scottish runner Josh Kerr just put in the fastest mile time in human history, breaking a record that had stood for 27 years after clocking 3:42.66.

Set at the recent London Diamond League athletics meet, Kerr finished a half-second faster than the legendary Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj, who ran a mile in 3:43.13 back in 1999, in Rome, when Kerr was just a toddler.

Unapologetically bold, Kerr widely publicized his intention to break the Men’s fastest mile record at the start of the year, and spent much of it in intense training.

Kerr already had the pedigree to challenge El Guerrouj. He is an Olympic silver medalist, and held the world record for fastest 1,500 meters.

On race day, he was helped to the 500 and 1,000 meter marks by pacemakers, who eventually departed and allowed the Scot to complete the final stretch alone, during which time he left American runner Yared Nuguse, himself holder of the 4th (now 5th) fastest mile time, behind with about 250 meters to go.

He flew past 1,500 meters and set a new personal best over that distance. According to World Athletics’ report from that night, Kerr crossed every checkpoint with a better time than El Guerrouj.

After crossing the line, the 28-year-old became the seventh British athlete to claim the mile record, and first since Steve Cram in 1985. His training, documented on a YouTube account, saw him among the hills and elevation of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He dubbed the camp “Project 222,” referring to two-hundred and twenty-two seconds, equating to 3 minutes and 42 seconds—the aimed-for time of his heat at the Diamond League.

While he didn’t branch out into such uncharted territory, he was overjoyed in victory, having broken one of the longest-standing records in track and field.

“It’s very overwhelming with the amount of hype [I created]. It’s silly to call [the attempt] that early because there’s a lot of things which can go wrong, but I am surrounded by amazing people and was able to stay consistent and put the work in,” Kerr told BBC Sport with the sweat still on his brow.

“If I am to leave my mark on this sport as a British legend, following in the footsteps of the legends behind me, I have to put in those performances.”

“Those performances take every single part of you, every single part of your team. The amount of work behind the scenes is incredible. Today it was a performance I was able to bring out—I just hoped it would be a little bit faster!”

Kerr is an inspiration, and that’s not editorializing—the blistering pace he set seemed very much to pull everyone along with him, and Marathon Handbook reported that 6 other runners set personal bests, and one runner, Germany’s Robert Farken, ran a national record of 3:46.82, finishing 4th.

Coral Reef Long Presumed Dead Is Rediscovered ‘Teeming with Life’ Off Coast of Africa

A coral reef long presumed dead has been rediscovered “teeming with life” off the coast of West Africa.

Surveys conducted in the 1960s that were focused on identifying promising fishing areas, flagged a possible deep-water coral reef, but scientists at the time it assumed must be dead.

Now, using a modern sonar survey, scientists have found an apparently healthy reef—an amazing discovery that was described in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.

After days of “difficult” field work, the sonar revealed structures which the team interpreted as a coral reef, and hopes were raised.

“It was a mix of long days at sea, technical problems, and a lot of uncertainty,” lead author Gérard Zinzindohoué said of the effort. “I still remember seeing those first images.”

“It was a mix of excitement and disbelief, because after all this time thinking about this reef, suddenly there was something real in front of us.”

Mr. Zinzindohoué and his colleagues at the Institute of Halieutic and Oceanographic Research in Cotonou, Benin, reasoned that it could have been a mesophotic coral ecosystem.

A mesophotic coral ecosystem lives deeper than the usual shallow coral reefs, in zones where light is much more limited, he explains.

“Unlike typical shallow reefs, it does not always form a single continuous reef structure. Instead, it can appear as patchy or scattered coral communities spread across the seafloor.”

Using the historical surveys as a guide, the research team surveyed 7 miles of seabed with sonar. To investigate the most promising areas, the team used an underwater drone, and the Deep Sea Camera System, provided by the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab.

The footage showed a seemingly healthy reef, with 8 different types of coral and 8 species of fish sheltering and feeding around the corals.

The fish included golden African snappers, blackbar soldierfish, Guinean angelfish, West African goatfish, the Monrovia doctorfish, three-banded butterflyfish, and two species of damselfish.

The reef doesn’t seem to be a continuous coral barrier, but patches of coral occupying rocky areas suitable for their growth, although researchers say it’s possible that further surveys will identify more reefs.

“To our knowledge, this is the first confirmed record of a living mesophotic coral ecosystem on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf. However, I think what we found is probably not an exception.”

GLOBAL REEF COVERAGE: Scientists Have Found Climate-Resistant Coral Reefs Around the World Totaling the Size of Wisconsin

“It is more likely a reflection of how little we still know about coastal regions in West Africa and elsewhere. If we were able to find this reef again after 60 years, how many others are still undocumented or simply forgotten?”

The research team hasn’t been able to sample the corals directly yet, which means that the species identifications still need to be confirmed.

It’s also impossible to know, without more data, if the corals were really dead in the 1960s and have since recovered. That would make them intriguing research targets as the study of coral resilience in a changing climate advances.

Mr. Zinzindohoué interprets the historical reports as potentially recording a continuous coral reef barrier extending roughly 40 kilometers, or 24 miles, parallel to the coast.

After 5-yo Diagnosed with Rare Disease, Little Sister Wanted to Be Her ‘Brave’ Bone Marrow Donor

From Salt Lake City comes the touching story of a 5-year-old girl saved thanks to a bone marrow transplant from none other than her 2-year-old sister.

Emma Meline was diagnosed with an extremely rare bone disease after her mother Amanda brought her to the pediatrician with a rash and swelling on her leg.

Little Lucy, Emma’s younger sister, said she was going to be “brave” for her older sibling, during a mercifully short stay in the hospital for a bone marrow transplant that almost certainly saved Emma’s life.

Months on from the procedure, Emma dotes on Lucy as never before, a source of immense pride and bittersweetness for their mother Amanda.

“She’s realizing that Lucy saved her life and they have that bond,” she exclusively told People. “That’s so incredible.”

It was just 4 days before Christmas 2025 that Meline and her then-husband Jacob noticed the symptoms on Emma’s leg. The pediatrician didn’t like the look of it at all and ordered lab tests. The good news, he said, was that it wasn’t leukemia.

The bad news is that Emma had aplastic anemia, a rare disease whereby the bone marrow tissue ceases to make blood cells. The disease can range from mild to fatal, can develop at any age, and result from outside aggravations or manifest as an autoimmune disorder.

Sometimes it can be treated with medication, but in Emma’s case, she needed a bone marrow transplant. One of her twin younger sisters Lucy was determined to be a perfect genetic match whose bone marrow could be transplanted without worrying about rejection.

It took 2 months for the operation to be scheduled, during which time Meline and Emma practically lived together at the hospital, as the girl was scared to be left alone. Lucy had to have rounds of blood work as well.

“[Lucy’s] favorite thing to say was, ‘I’m being brave for Emma,’ if she had to get blood work done,” Meline said. “And it was so tender.”

Shortly before the February 17th procedure, Emma had to undergo targeted chemotherapy to destroy her bone marrow tissue and make room for the transplant, which was a complete success, allowing mother and daughter to return home on March 11th for a gradual recovery.

The child requires special sanitary precautions, as she is immunocompromised, but with no recurrence of the aplastic anemia 100 days after the operation, it has been considered a complete success.

Biotech Startup Breeds Blight Tolerant American Chestnut with Long-Term Viability

At the intersection of big data, forestry, and genomics, a biotech startup has birthed a generation of “elite” blight-resistant American chestnut trees through a single gene insertion, rather than deep genetic tinkering.

The company is inspired by saving American hardwoods that have been ravaged by an introduced fungal disease, and says their proprietary approach could be replicated to help save American elm, ash, and white oak trees as well.

North American timber is a $350 billion industry. Hardwood forests support habitats and biodiversity, and anchor some 15% of all American carbon. Yet between chestnut blight, the emerald ash borer, and Dutch elm disease, many native species have experienced catastrophic declines.

“I grew up in northern Ohio on a street called Chestnut Ridge, named by early settlers after the dominant trees on the landscape, so there was always a kind of mystique around the chestnut in the back of my memory, even before I understood why,” Andrew Serazin, co-founder of SilvaBio, told GNN in an email correspondence.

Several concepts for protecting or immunizing American chestnuts from the blight which landed on American shores in the early 1900s from East Asia have failed or are being tested. Along with his partner and aptly-named entrepreneur Michael Bloom, Serazin and SilvaBio have approached the challenge by combining sophisticated predictive methods and knowledge of the chestnut’s genomics with their “Lightspeed” breeding process that offers an enhanced form of propagation

The Darling 54 breakthrough was originally developed by scientists at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). There, scientists inserted a single copy of a plant gene called OxO, which confers resilience to fungal diseases in a variety of plants from banana trees to mosses.

SilvaBio holds the exclusive license to this technology and continues to advance restoration by moving the Darling line from the lab to real-world deployment. Using genomic prediction, accelerated breeding, and advanced micropropagation, the company is developing a broad portfolio of American chestnut genetics designed to maximize diversity, adaptability, and long-term resilience.

“By analyzing DNA, we can identify which young seedlings are most likely to survive disease long before they would typically be tested in the field,” the co-founders told GNN. “In practice, this is similar to precision medicine, but applied to forests.”

“Through our proprietary speed-breeding process, carefully controlling high-intensity light, we can encourage trees to flower and reproduce much faster than they would in nature,” they continued. “This allows us to complete a breeding cycle in about a year, compared to 10 or more years using traditional approaches, overcoming one of the biggest bottlenecks in tree improvement.”

The result was “Darling54.” A double-blinded trial of this special American chestnut cultivar compared with common cultivars found that the “cankers” resulting from chestnut blight were orders of magnitude smaller on Darling54 both as a seedling and at 4 years.

More recently, 4 independent experiments from Purdue University, the University of New England, and SUNY, demonstrated that Darling American chestnut trees consistently show smaller blight cankers than their wild-type counterparts.

On Arbor Day 2026, a Darling54 chestnut was planted at the White House.

“A foreign pathogen took the American chestnut from our forests. As we approach our 250th, American innovation, science collaboration and stewardship are bringing it back. That is a story worthy of this anniversary,” said Jessica Bowron, National Park Service Acting Director, in a speech to mark the occasion.

Before Darling cultivars can be cultivated on mass, however, detailed regulatory science has to be conducted to ensure that focusing Natural Selection so pointedly to a single purpose does not compromise other aspects of the American chestnut’s biology.

For example, in December 2023, the American Chestnut Foundation withdrew its support for a genetically engineered chestnut that was decades in development, after multiple documented research errors revealed the tree to be genetically defective. Discouraging field performance rendered them, in the Foundation’s opinion, unsuitable as the basis for species restoration.

THE OLD FASHIONED WAY: Once Wiped Out by Blight, Thousands of American Chestnut Trees are Thriving on Biologist’s Land in Maine

Since development in 2016, a science update on SilvaBio’s cultivars reads, numerous observations and environmental studies have been done on trees we now know are Darling 54 offspring, with no indication of compromised safety or risks that would affect pending regulatory approval. “More in-depth genome sequencing and additional analyses on Darling 54 are underway and will be submitted to regulators soon.”

In their email, Serazin and Bloom addressed some misconceptions about their process, namely that their vision has “never” been to restore the American chestnut with “a single clone.”

“Healthy forests depend on genetic diversity. Our goal is to develop dozens, and eventually many more, blight-tolerant, regionally adapted lines,” they wrote.

We’ve lost roughly 75% of our mature elm trees. Ash is being devastated by the emerald ash borer, while beech, white oak, and walnut face their own emerging threats.”

“The American chestnut is our first application, but the same approach can be extended to other species facing similar challenges. Each new species builds on the scientific knowledge, propagation capabilities, and restoration partnerships we’ve already established.”

Senior Center Worker Celebrates 50 Years on the Job Without Using a Single Sick Day

Tom McKievick says his job is challenging yet entertaining, a good combination for a perspective career.

Yet when he saw the newspaper ad for the job at Fredericka Manor senior living community in Chula Vista, California, all the way back in 1976, he wasn’t intending to embark on a career.

Now, 50 years later, the man has finished what the Bureau of Labor Statistics defines as a “lifetime career,” one which saw him never take a single sick day. If he took one week of vacation a year, he’d have clocked in 12,650 times.

“When I started I wouldn’t think in a million years I’d still be here but I enjoy the residents and the work, and it’s entertaining and it’s challenging, and never boring,” he told Fox 5 San Diego.

McKievick works as head of security, and on the occasion of his 50th work anniversary, was presented with an award at a party held in his honor.

Longest Undersea Road to Shorten Travel Times by 5 Hours and Feature ‘Great Hall of Lights’

1,000 feet below the North Sea, blast after blast brings Norwegian engineers closer and closer to completion of the longest undersea road tunnel on Earth.

No one better to do it than Norway either, given that their citizens already built the world’s longest undersea road tunnel: the 9-mile-long Ryfylke.

The Rogfast—short for Rogaland Fixed Link—will be 7.6 miles longer than that. It should have a transformative effect on Norway’s west-coast transit map. One of the longest coastlines of any country in the world gives Norway a unique beauty, but what is a 40-minute flight flight for the crow between Stavanger and Bergen turns into a 5-hour journey in a car, requiring two ferry rides.

Funneling 4 lanes of traffic 300 meters below the sea will dodge all the fjord roads, and let motorists make the trip in substantially under an hour.

Norwegian construction firm Skanska is currently tunneling north from the island of Vestre Bokn, while the Swiss engineering firm Implenia is tunneling from Randaberg in the south, with the two ends scheduled to meet in 2029.

The cost of the project is currently estimated to come in at just short of 1 billion euros.

Niall Firth, writing at MIT Technology Review, brought to light (literally) some of the details of what it’s like blasting out the world’s longest undersea tunnel by physically descending into the bowels of the incredible engineering project.

Therebelow, contractors work 12-hour shifts for 12 days straight before receiving a 16-day break to reacquaint themselves with the surface, fresh air, and sunlight. Compared with most other nations engaged in these projects, Norwegians opt for explosive blasting and drilling methods compared to tunnel boring machines.

The approach apparently offers more flexibility, and gives ample opportunities to plug leaks from the sea above by injecting “grout,” a concrete-like sludge that seals the rock in advance of further blasting. Each blast adds about 5-6 yards of tunnel.

The biggest challenges according to Firth are the inevitability of the water trying to worm its way into the tunnel and the variation in the hardness of the rock to be blasted. It can unexpectedly change from being as hard as gneiss to loose as soil, and engineers have to continuously test the next 15-20 yards for hardness and water presence. Resisting tens of thousands of pounds of pressure, gneiss or granite may need only steel beams for support after a blast, while the looser stuff may need an entire reinforced concrete ceiling.

Nevertheless, the contractors are building the tunnel with the expectation it will be in top condition for the next century.

It’s not all danger and leaks and terrors down in the tunnel, though. Being set in one of the most advanced economies in the world, the project included some truly incredible features. One of these is a 4-lane underground roundabout.

Another is an exceptionally large hall that countryman Edvard Grieg could be proud of. The hall is lit in fantastically vibrant colors which cause the veining in the rocks to shimmer, and in the future it’s planned that artists will bring installations into the hall.

UNDERSEA TUNNELS: This Undersea Tunnel Marvel is Set to Break 5 Records and Shave Hours Off Travel Times in Europe

Much like the dry humor of the Norwegians that Firth encounters repeatedly on his trip, the great hall of lights has a drier purpose: to stop people from falling asleep in the dark monotony. Anyone who’s driven through the Saint Goddard tunnel in Switzerland, for example, will know how boring it can be, no pun intended.

Additional challenges, such as boring down two massive, 27-feet-wide ventilation shafts, and constantly removing the masses of blasted rock, needed to be budgeted for in the project. This rock will offer Norway and the local community an interesting rebate of sorts for the taxpayer cost of the tunnel—a brand new artificial island.

With 85 million cubic meters of stone and debris, it’s about the only use suitable for such a large quantity of waste rock without trucking it all across Norway for gravel and mine backfill.

ABOVE GROUND TUNNELS: Austria and Italy Finish Digging World’s Longest Rail Tunnel–Ready to Reshape Travel Maps

The Rogfast tunnel, with its record-breaking length, incredible engineering, and great hall of lights, seems liable to become a tourist attraction. It doesn’t hurt that either side of its nearly 17 mile length is some of the most beautiful fjords and landscapes anywhere in Europe.

The opening of the tunnel is slated for 2033.
