It ain’t easy being wheely – especially for this new mother who couldn’t easily take her baby out in a stroller because of her wheelchair.
That was her sad reality until a 16-year-old Michigan high school student had the brains – and the compassion – to invent the perfect contraption for the paraplegic mom.
Sharina Jones has been confined to a wheelchair for 30 years and had adapted to all other obstacles in her way. However, after she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Sharina lamented that she was not able to take her son out in a stroller with her friends.

Alden Kane, a young STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) student going to school at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School heard about Sharina’s dilemma and, after collaborating with the University Of Detroit Mercy, got to work on a solution.
Alden toiled away in the school workshop for six months until he finally completed a clip-on baby carrier made out of lightweight steel-tubing that Sharina can attach to the front of her wheelchair. All she needs to do is use her baby’s own car seat, slip it into the attachment, and she is ready to roll.

“After six months of hard work,” Alden told WJBK News in Detroit, “it was priceless seeing the design on her wheelchair, being used with her child in it.”
Alden plans on perfecting and patenting the unit so he can use his design to help mobile mommas with disabilities everywhere.
