African engineering prodigy Kelvin Doe-by-AdamCohn15-year-old Kelvin Doe is an engineering whiz kid in Sierra Leone who has invented or manufactured his own batteries, generators and transmitters for radio broadcasting using spare parts he gathered from trash bins.

Completely self-taught, the boy was invited by MIT to visit America recently to expand his horizons.

Kelvin is always trying to help his community, where most days people cope without electricity.

His batteries and generator have kept the lights on, yes, but it is his FM transmitter and radio station that has really empowered the young social-preneur. He broadcasts news and music every day.

Kelvin became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT. He experienced the US for the first time, exploring incredible opportunities, even while contending with homesickness.

The video, which has attracted 3.3 million views in two weeks, comes from PRODIGIES, a bi-weekly series showcasing the youngest and brightest, produced by Radical Media’s THNKR TV.
