Girl Scout’s Hilariously Honest Cookie Reviews Lead to Record-breaking Sales

Charlotte McCourt-Youtube

Charlotte McCourt believes that honesty is the best policy – that’s why she wrote astonishingly blunt reviews of every Girl Scout cookie for her customers.

The 11-year-old gave the Do Si Do cookie a 5 out of 10 score because of its “bland, unoriginal flavor”. Her most scathing 1/10 review was for the Toffeetastic; saying that it was “a bleak, flavorless, gluten-free wasteland”.

RELATEDDaughter Fulfills Dad’s Last Wish With Side-Splitting Obituary

Now one might think that being 100% honest about a product you’re trying to sell isn’t the best method of making money. But as it turns out, Charlotte broke a Girl Scout cookie selling record.

Charlotte had been aiming to use this full-disclosure policy to help her sell at least 300 boxes. However, because customers were so intrigued by the Girl Scout’s honesty, she managed to sell over 23,000 boxes.

Tommy Morrissey-Youtube

6-year-old Tommy Morrissey may have been born with only one arm, but that didn’t stop him from proving that he could play like the pros earlier this week.

In a closest-to-the-pin content that was hosted before this week’s Honda Classic golf tournament at PGA National, Tommy played against 58 other golfers from 55 yards out.

But when the pros had to mimic Tommy’s style and only use one arm, he ended up beating 45 out of the 58 competitors.

Tommy, who started playing golf when he was just 14 months old, became one of the star performers during the entire competition – not surprising, considering how adorable he is, as well as talented.

Abused Pit Bull Goes From “Crack House” to Firehouse Dog

Ashley the Firehouse Pit Bull-Instagram

Ashley the pit bull went from struggling to survive in an alleged New York City “crack house”, to being the beloved mascot of the local fire department.

The founders of foster-based rescue No More Pain Rescue received a call in mid-January about a pup who had been abandoned with no food, water, or electricity. When they rescued the 1-year-old canine from the house, she was malnourished and had burns on some parts of her body.

After evacuating the pup from the dilapidated building, they called some of their friends at the Lower East Side FDNY station known as “Fort Pitt” and asked if they could look after the pit bull until they found her a proper home.

Three days after welcoming the newly-dubbed “Ashley” into the firehouse, the responders fell in love with the pup and asked to adopt her.

Ashley now spends her days playing fetch with the team and enjoying the breeze from the back seat of the firetruck. She may have had a rocky beginning, but Ashley now has a pawesome future ahead of her with the FDNY boys.

“Every person deserves to rest in peace”: Muslims Help Repair Vandalized Jewish Cemetery

Vandalized Headstones-Youtube

In a compassionate gesture of solidarity, these Missouri Muslims have raised thousands of dollars through an online crowdfunding website to repair the Jewish headstones that were recently vandalized.

Almost 200 Jewish graves at the Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery in St. Louis were knocked over or vandalized during President’s Day weekend. When activists Tarek El-Messidi and Linda Sarsour heard about the incident, they were shocked and heartbroken.

So they created a fundraising campaign on Launch Good. Since it was started 24 hours ago, $88,000 has already been raised to repair the graves – over four times the original goal. That equals to about $1,000 raised every twenty minutes.

All the excess money raised through the campaign will go towards assisting other damaged Jewish properties and centers nationwide.

“Through this campaign, we hope to send a united message from the Jewish and Muslim communities that there is no place for this type of hate, desecration, and violence in America,” reads the fundraising page. “We pray that this restores a sense of security and peace to the Jewish-American community who has undoubtedly been shaken by this event.”

Mystery Woman Donates Rare Bill Worth $62K to Help Youth

£5 Note-Tony Huggins Haig Gallery

An unidentified woman from Northern Ireland accidentally found a five pound note that was actually worth a fortune. But the lucky anonymous woman didn’t keep it – she gave it to charity instead.

There are only four of these £5 bills in the world, and each one was distributed into circulation in a different UK country. The reason the currency is so unique is because they were engraved with a tiny portrait of Jane Austen etched by micro-artist Graham Scott. The bills in Wales and Scotland have already been discovered, leaving only the one hidden in England.

RELATEDSingle Mom Parlays Small Lottery Win into Fund For Homeless Man In the Cold

When the woman from County Donegal found it in County Fermanagh, she contacted the gallery that it originated from – The Tony Huggins-Haig Gallery in Kelso, Scotland – to announce that she had found the $62,000 prize. Once the bill was verified to contain the special portrait, the woman took a few weeks to “mull over” what she would do with it.

The gallery then received a letter with the special bill enclosed along with a note from the woman reading: “£5 note enclosed, I don’t need it at my time of life. Please use it to help young people.”

The currency will be auctioned off to help the Children In Need charity.

IKEA Releases Free Design For Garden Sphere That Feeds a Neighborhood

Garden Sphere-Released

This easily-constructed new IKEA product could feed dozens of people in your very own neighborhood – and the blueprints are available for download free of charge.

The Grow Room is an urban structure designed by architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husumto in Space 10 – an IKEA idea lab based on coming up with innovative, groundbreaking solutions for the future. The designers hope that the Grow Room will encourage people to engage in growing their own food in sustainable, natural ways. Not to mention that the Grow Room brings the food of a farm to a city by taking up only a small fraction of the space.

All one needs to make a Grow Room is some plywood, screws, a hammer, and a trip to a local public fab lab. According to Space 10, such technologies as 3D printing and cutting are as accessible as printers.

“This mean most people — in theory — could produce almost anything themselves,” says the organization in a press release. “Just as printers are now ubiquitous; local and on-demand, customized production could become the norm of the future. We’re tapping into this emerging potential by releasing the cutting files for The Growroom.”

Cities like Helsinki, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, and Taipei are all reportedly gearing up to construct their own Grow Rooms.

Donations From All Over the World Save Untouchable Cat

Valentino the Cat-Leave No Paws Behind

Valentino was in sorry shape when he was admitted to a local animal shelter with a host of health problems in need of treatment. He was given the chance he needed to recover, however, thanks to Elaine Seamans.

Elaine, who works for a nonprofit that specializes in giving medical care to sick canines, was visiting the shelter in Los Angeles when she saw the scraggly cat in his cage.

Though she generally only keeps her eyes open for sick dogs, the sight of Valentino pulled on her heartstrings.

Elaine called the CEO of Leave No Paws Behind; a nonprofit organization that takes in terminally-ill or seriously injured animals for treatment, and asked for assistance with Valentino.

When the sweet feline was admitted to The Pet Doctors of Sherman Oaks, he was diagnosed with sarcoptic mange, low glucose levels, infections, dehydration, and gastrointestinal problems. Sarcoptic mange is a dangerously contagious condition that requires handlers and care givers to wear protective gear.

But when Leave No Paws Behind published Valentino’s story, donations poured in from all over the world, paying for his treatments.

The feline has recovered significantly since he was placed in 24-hour care, and will soon be available for adoption after being placed in local foster care.

“His glucose levels remain stable and great along with his appetite – so over all, they tell me he is doing FABULOUSLY!” says the organization’s website. “He is so sweet and his little personality is starting to shine through!”

Middle Schooler Who Cut Class to See Springsteen Invited on Stage for Duet (WATCH)

The 15-year-old resident of Brisbane, Australia brandished a sign at the show reading: “Missed school… now can I play ‘Growin’ Up’ with you?”

Dad Creates App to Help Daughter Communicate

Sadie and Robert-Youtube

Since Rob Laffan’s daughter Sadie has nonverbal autism, trying to communicate what she wanted or felt to her parents was terribly frustrating.

That’s why Rob created a revolutionary app called Tippy Talk to help her say what she wanted, felt, or needed.

The app starts by presenting Sadie with a photo of her mother and another photo of her father. Once she selects which one she would like to communicate with, she is presented with dozens of images that correspond with a feeling or question. After she selects the image, the statement is then translated into a worded text message that is sent to the parent’s phone.

RELATEDTeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

The app may be similar to picture exchange communication boards that have already been used for years, but Tippy Talk allows Sadie to communicate with her parents whether they’re at work or out of the country – plus, it’s not as easy to ruin as the flimsier material of papers or books.

After creating Tippy Talk, Rob was elected College Entrepreneur of the Year 2015 and awarded $11,000 at the Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur Awards two years ago. But the greatest reward of all is how Rob can now efficiently communicate with his daughter.

“Being able to understand my girl’s exact desire, needs, and feeling has brought me closer to really understanding and loving her little personality,” Rob told The Mighty. “Now it’s just a case of giving the same joy to other parents like me.”

Sharnique Dasant and Ashley Jordan Full-Facebook

Ashley Jordan and her husband Michael do all of their shopping at Walmart every two weeks – but they have apparently never encountered as compassionate a cashier as Sharnique Dasant.

The couple, who are the proud parents of three children, were loading up two shopping carts worth of groceries and baby clothes at a Walmart in Colombia, South Carolina. When it came time to pay, their bill had totaled up to $200.

When Sharnique finished ringing them up, she says she got a divine inkling that she should pay for half of the groceries.

“She said ‘I think y’all need a blessing tonight!’ And she waked around to the machine and swiped the card,” 27-year-old Ashley told PEOPLE. “She said ‘God told me to bless y’all!’ I said ‘Are you serious? Okay, thank you!’ ”

Ashley was so touched by the cashier’s gesture, that she took a photo with Sharnique and posted it on Facebook with a thank you.

“It was another dreaded shopping trip trying to buy groceries for a family of 5,” says Ashley. “We literally dread going to Walmart and buying groceries because my husband’s whole check goes to food for our family. I will say that I’m not a fan of shopping at Walmart because of how rude some of the people can be. But after tonight my whole perspective has changed.”

“I wanted her friends and family to know how genuine she is, because we need to see these good stories in the world today, and it’s good to know there’s people out there who will do a blessing like this,” says Ashley. “It has opened my heart. I plan on paying it forward in the future.”

Woman Saves Policeman From Attacker on the Side of the Road

Vickie Williams-Tillman and Thomas Bennett-Released

Vickie Williams-Tillman is being hailed as a hero after she saved a police officer from being attacked by a man on the side of the road.

The officer, whose name was not officially disclosed, found 28-year-old Thomas Bennett sleeping in his parked car in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Seeing incriminating drug-related content inside the vehicle, the officer awoke the slumbering culprit.

When Bennett exited the car, however, he was not about to go peacefully. He grabbed the policeman’s baton and started hitting him over the head.

Dramatic Reduction in Teen Suicide Attempts After Same-sex Marriage Legalization

Pride Flag-CC Get Event Photos

The implementation of state laws legalizing same-sex marriage was associated with a significant reduction in the rate of suicide attempts among high school students – and an even greater reduction among gay, lesbian and bisexual adolescents.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health researchers estimate that state-level, same-sex marriage policies were associated with more than 134,000 fewer adolescent suicide attempts per year. The study compared states that passed laws allowing same-sex marriage through Jan. 2015 to states that did not enact state-level legalization. A Supreme Court decision made same-sex marriage federal law in June of 2015.

The findings show the effect that social policies can have on behavior, the researchers say.

“These are high school students so they aren’t getting married any time soon, for the most part,” says study leader Julia Raifman, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School. “Still, permitting same-sex marriage reduces structural stigma associated with sexual orientation. There may be something about having equal rights – even if they have no immediate plans to take advantage of them – that makes students feel less stigmatized and more hopeful for the future.”

RELATEDHistoric Firsts and Achievements of Election Day 2016

Suicide is the second most common cause of death among people ages 15 to 24 in the United States. Suicide rates have been rising in the U.S., and data indicate that rates of suicide attempts requiring medical attention among adolescents increased 47% between 2009 and 2015. Gay, lesbian and bisexual high school students are at particular risk.

For the study, Raifman and her colleagues analyzed data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, a survey supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The data included 32 of the 35 states that enacted same-sex marriage policies between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 1, 2015. The researchers used data from Jan. 1, 1999 to Dec. 31, 2015 to capture trends in suicide attempts five years before the first same-sex marriage policy went into effect in Massachusetts. They were also able to compare data with states that did not enact same-sex marriage laws. They conducted state-by-state analyses, comparing, for example, suicide attempt rates in a state like Massachusetts before same-sex marriage was legalized to the period right after.

State same-sex marriage legalization policies were associated with a seven percent reduction in suicide attempts among high school students generally. The association was concentrated in sexual minorities, with a 14 percent reduction in suicide attempts among gay, lesbian and bisexual adolescents. The effects persisted for at least two years. The states that did not implement same-sex marriage saw no reduction in suicide attempts among high school students.

MOREFewer Babies Having Babies – U.S. Teen Birth Rate Cut in Half

It’s unclear whether the political campaigns surrounding same-sex marriage legalization were behind the reduction in suicide attempts or the laws themselves. Still, they found that the reduction in suicide attempts wasn’t realized until after a law was enacted. In a state that would go on to pass a law two years in the future – when there was likely to be much conversation in the public about it – suicide attempts remained flat before passage.

While Raifman found that legalizing same-sex marriage appears to be positively associated with reducing suicide attempts, policies that take away rights or add to stigma could have the opposite effect.

“We can all agree that reducing adolescent suicide attempts is a good thing, regardless of our political views,” Raifman says. “Policymakers need to be aware that policies on sexual minority rights can have a real effect on the mental health of adolescents. The policies at the top can dictate in ways both positive and negative what happens further down.”
