When Diets Don’t Work, Try Time-Restricted Eating – It’s Not All About Counting Calories

The Lesson: While there is no clear consensus on how effective diets can be at keeping off weight (some publications suggest it’s as bad as 95%), it’s not unusual to see people approach dieting with a degree of hopelessness. But here, Dr. Satchin Panda outlines a strategy which could prove far more effective for everyone’s long-term health – and it’s not about counting calories, cutting out the cheesecake, or anything like that. It’s about time-restricted eating: limiting the period of food consumption during the day to coincide with your circadian clocks, as well as giving your metabolism time to recover and your cells time to rebuild.

Over the course of his studies, Dr. Panda has observed a variety of positive results from when people have used the time-restricted eating strategy, including the reduction of symptoms related to autoimmune diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

Notable Excerpt: “So what we see in our study, a small study that was published, and also some of the other studies that may be in the pipeline, is that when people adopt a time-restricted feeding in their regular life – in real life, not in the laboratory condition or in clinical trials – then they naturally reduce their caloric intake without even counting calories. So, for example, when they stop, suppose their target to stop is around 6:00, 7:00, or 8:00 in the evening, then the late night snacks and then the late night glass of wine or beer that used to be their usual habit, they stop that. So in that way, they’re doing two things: one is reducing calories and [the other is] improving nutrition quality because that extra energy-dense diet is not getting into their system.”

The Host: Ronda Patrick has a Ph.D. in biomedical studies from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis, and Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. In addition to being the podcast host of Found My Fitness, she is also new mother and researcher who eagerly engages the public in regards to the long-term effects of clinical nutrition as it relates to health and aging, cold and hot exposure therapy, the gut microbiome, exercise physiology, and other topics concerning functional medicine.

The Guest: Dr. Satchin Panda is a professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California where he studies circadian biology. He has published multiple peer-reviewed studies on many different topics related to our internal circadian clocks, which can be found on his profile at the Salk Institute’s website. Additionally, Dr. Panda is the author of “The Circadian Code”, a guide to losing weight and “transforming your health from morning to midnight.”

Cops Find Stolen Krispy Kreme Van And Give Away the Cargo’s Goodies to Hungry Homeless

Most people are familiar with the stereotype about police officers having an affinity for donuts, and these cops are no exception.

They are, however, very careful to share their treats with the homeless as well.

A Krispy Kreme donut van was reported stolen from its location in Lake City, Florida on Tuesday morning. Later in the day, police officers found the van 193 miles (310 kilometers) away in Clearwater.

RELATEDAfter Serving 3 Million Meals in Puerto Rico, Chef Travels Ahead of Hurricane Florence to Feed Even More

The store manager of the van’s branch offered up the donuts to the police force as a thank you for recovering the stolen vehicle.

Though the cops kept a few of the pastries for a snack, they gave the rest of the van’s entire cargo to Clearwater’s homeless population.

“There were dozens of delicious donuts on board the stolen van that the store manager gave to the police officers,” said the Clearwater Police Department in a Facebook post. “The officers saved a few donuts to enjoy later and donated the rest to the homeless feeding that takes place adjacent to the police station each night.”

Ultra-Light Gloves Let Users ‘Touch’ Objects in Virtual Reality – and We May Soon Have Entire Suit

Engineers and software developers around the world are seeking to create technology that lets users touch, grasp and manipulate virtual objects, while feeling like they are actually touching something in the real world.

Researchers have just made a major step toward this goal with a new glove, which is not only lightweight – under 8 grams (0.3 ounces) per finger – but also provides feedback that is extremely realistic.

The glove is able to generate up to 40 Newtons of holding force on each finger with just 200 Volts and only a few milliWatts of power. It also has the potential to run on a very small battery. That, together with the glove’s low form factor (only 2 mm thick), translates into an unprecedented level of precision and freedom of movement.

“We wanted to develop a lightweight device that – unlike existing virtual-reality gloves – doesn’t require a bulky exoskeleton, pumps or very thick cables,” says Herbert Shea, head of L’Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne’s Soft Transducers Laboratory.

RELATEDUber Driver Stumbles Into Gift of New Hands For His 11-Year-old Daughter After Picking Up Engineering Student

The scientists’ glove, called DextrES, is made of nylon with thin elastic metal strips running over the fingers. The strips are separated by a thin insulator. When the user’s fingers come into contact with a virtual object, the controller applies a voltage difference between the metal strips causing them to stick together via electrostatic attraction – this produces a braking force that blocks the finger’s or thumb’s movement. Once the voltage is removed, the metal strips glide smoothly and the user can once again move his fingers freely.

For now, the glove is powered by a very thin electrical cable, but thanks to the low voltage and power required, a very small battery could eventually be used instead.

LOOKDepressed by Cable News Playing in Public Everywhere, He Designed Glasses That Black Out Screens

“The system’s low power requirement is due to the fact that it doesn’t create a movement, but blocks one,” explains Shea.

The next step will be to scale up the device and apply it to other parts of the body using conductive fabric so that the researchers could eventually design an entire suit as well.

“Gamers are currently the biggest market, but there are many other potential applications – especially in healthcare, such as for training surgeons. The technology could also be applied in augmented reality,” says Shea.

After a Family Loss, Woman Finds Healing By Giving Away Pay-It-Forward Ice Cream

For most of the year, Stacey Achterhoff is a teacher for homeless children – but in the summertime, she hops on her tricycle-cart and becomes her sweet alter ego: Mrs. Delicious.

Mrs. Delicious specializes in giving away ice cream that was paid for by someone else. Whenever most people receive a cone courtesy of the colorful ice cream woman, they will immediately reach into their pockets to pay for a treat that will later be given to someone else.

“People want to know that goodness is prevailing over evil, and they want to be a part of that,” Achterhoff told KARE 11.

For the last three summers, Mrs. Delicious has made a name for herself in Duluth, Minnesota by giving away hundreds of ice cream cones and popsicles that were bought by community members who want to pay it forward to their neighbors – many of whom want to pay it forward in honor of someone else, much like Achterhoff.

RELATEDWhen Street Musician Offers His Earnings to Homeless Vets, He is Stunned By How They Pay It Forward

Achterhoff first started dispensing ice cream as a means of bringing joy to people after the death of her 91-year-old great aunt in 2009.

“I’m a person of faith, and what do you do when terrible things happen? You have to figure out where the light is,” she said.

LOOKWhen Widow Carries On Husband’s Kind Tradition of Filling a Cooler, People Pay It Forward

Then, three years ago, she was approached by a man who bought some of her ice cream cones and then immediately told her to give them away to other people.

She wrote about the encounter on her Facebook page, and upon seeing how many people were inspired by the compassionate gesture, she began the pay-it-forward model – and it has continued to make her city a little bit brighter one sweet treat at a time.

Denmark May Begin Labeling Food According to Its Effect on Climate Change

The government of Denmark may soon require grocery stores and packaging manufacturers to grade foods based on their environmental impact.

The ambitious initiative would calculate the grade based on the amount of transportation the product required to reach the shelves, as well as how much water was used to make the product, which pesticides were used on its exterior, the environmental impact of the packaging, and the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that were created as a byproduct of the food.

Legislators admit that the task will be difficult based on the challenge of grading the products in contrast with their nutritious content as well.

Ideally, the labels would encourage consumers to shop more responsibly and urge food companies to use more sustainable practices for their products.

The Danish Agriculture and Food Council has reportedly been working with the European Union for the last ten years to develop an efficient labeling system, although lawmakers finally offered a formal proposal for the labeling system last week.

“Our goal is to develop an accurate label. We must include every piece of information so products like plant-based substitutes for ground meat has information on the climate impact of the soy in the product which is produced in South America,” Morten Høyer, director of the council, told CNN.

“Things like these are difficult to calculate, so we have a worthy challenge ahead of us before we can say with certainty that we have the right solution for a climate label.”

“Everyone knows that food production influences the climate, but if the rest of the world produced food the way we do in Denmark, the world would be a better place,” adds Høyer.

FDA Approves Once-Monthly Preventative Migraine Treatment With No Major Side Effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new preventative treatment for migraines in adults.

The treatment, which is called Emgality, is a once-monthly, self-administered injection that was developed by global pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company.

“Despite the devastating impact of migraine, only about 10 percent of people living with the disease are currently taking a preventive treatment,” said Christi Shaw, president of Lilly Bio-Medicines. “With this approval, we are thrilled to offer a preventive treatment option to adults living with this disease.”

Migraine is a disabling, neurologic disease that affects more than 30 million American adults. According to the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey, the total unadjusted cost associated with migraine in the U.S. is estimated to be as high as $56 billion annually, yet migraine remains “under-recognized and under-treated”.

But now, hope may be on the horizon for migraine sufferers. According to several double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, the Emgality injections had no major side effects and they cut chronic and episodic migraines by as much as 50% – which is being hailed as “a huge deal” by physicians.

Emgality will be available to patients shortly after approval. Patients with commercial insurance may also be able to receive up to 12 months of the treatment for free as part of Lilly’s patient support program.

This Movie Star Lives Such a Simple and Happy Life, He’s Giving His $714 Million Net Worth to Charity

Chow Yun-Fat, the beloved movie star from Hong Kong, has recently announced that he will be giving away his entire fortune to charity.

The 63-year-old celebrity and philanthropist has starred in such films as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, A Better Tomorrow, and The Replacement Killers.

Though he has accumulated a staggering net worth of $714 million over the course of his career, he apparently has no need for such wealth.

According to Chinese news outlet ET Today, Yun-Fat lives a very modest lifestyle, spending only about $100 per month ($800 HKD). Instead of driving luxury sports cars and living in a mansion like one might expect of a stereotypical celebrity, he buys his clothes at thrift stores; he and his wife prefer to eat at food stalls; he takes public transit whenever he can; and he only recently bought a smart phone after the Nokia phone – which he had owned for 17 years – finally broke.

He and his wife say that they plan on giving the fortune away to a number of charities, in addition to their own charity, which they have managed for several years.

“My dream is to be a happy and normal person,” Yun-Fat told ET. “The hardest thing in life is not about how much money you earn, but how to keep a peaceful mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple and carefree manner.”

As Thank You For Being Ray of Sunshine, Hurricane Volunteer Builds Stunning Cardboard Fort for 2-Year-old

This article has been reprinted via the Red Cross

Abby may only be 2 years old, but she is the perfect person to have in an evacuation shelter.

The bubble-blowing youngster, who is described as energetic, positive and “a lot of fun”, spent several nights at a Red Cross shelter at W.T. Brown Elementary School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with her three older siblings and mother after they were evacuated ahead of Hurricane Florence.

“She had the biggest personality of anyone in the shelter,” said volunteer Chelsey Griggs. “She would always come around the corner of the registration desk to say good morning to everybody.”

Abby’s family had been through this sort of ordeal before since they lost everything they had in Hurricane Matthew. This time, however, their Spring Lake home was spared.

So now, the family helps at the shelter whenever they can.

Abby’s cheerful attitude was rewarded when Griggs gathered a bunch of discarded cot boxes and built a kiddie castle for the delighted guest. It was a perfect way to help the pint-sized princess pass the time – because after all, life in a shelter can be pretty boring for little ones who aren’t surrounded by the comforts of home.

Abby’s face lit up at the sight of the box castle.

“Is that for me?” she asked.

Using plastic cups for the spires and filling the inside with a Red Cross blanket and toys, Griggs’ finishing touches were a tinfoil crown for Abby and a sign that read “Red Cross Castle” right above the entrance.

The local sheriff’s deputies even got in on the fun by posing as guards in front of Abby’s castle door.

An engineer in Los Angeles got sick being bombarded by endless bad news and television ads on public screens—so he created a pair of sunglasses that can block out the tirade of screens.

Have you ever been in a queue somewhere—or waiting at the airport gate or doctor’s office—where they’re playing 24-hour cable news and you just wished you could turn it off?

Scott Blew was in line at a food truck, of all places—and even outdoors he couldn’t escape the glare of droning negative news.

He remembered reading about a special kind of film that could block out LED and LCD light. So he decided to try ordering some of the film and putting it on a regular pair of glasses—and he was delighted to find that it worked perfectly.

RELATEDHow to Follow Negative News Without Getting Depressed

With the help of artist Ivan Cash, the two friends designed the IRL Glasses, which stands for ‘in real life’.

The shades utilize a special kind of polarized lens that blocks the light. Whens someone wears the glasses in a sports bar, for instance, and looks around, the TV screens magically seem to go black.

Some cool videos they posted online show how their current prototype can block out any television, and also most computers.

They created a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to manufacture them, and in three days it reached its goal of $25,000. The page has raised $110,000—with two more weeks of crowdfunding remaining.

Wearing the glasses in public for a few months have also piqued peoples’ interest. The duo get stopped on the street because Cash modeled the glasses to look just like those in the 1988 sci-fi movie They Live, about a man who discovers a pair of glasses that can magically block out advertisements.

MOREUber Driver Stumbles Into Gift of New Hands For His 11-Year-old After Picking Up Engineering Student

In an interview with WIRED, Cash says he hopes the product is also a conversation starter about how ubiquitous news broadcasts affect our lives and how people want control over their exposure to technology.

Next, we think someone needs to develop technology that can block out only the bad news.

Artists Invite Refugees to Transform Their Prison Shelter into Bright Community of Color

Is it possible to transform a prison, using only paint, into a welcoming space? A creative team in Amsterdam proved it can be done brilliantly.

Following the refugee crisis of the early decade, the Dutch nation was scrambling to find sustainable housing for the influx of migrants.

Fortunately, with rapidly decreasing rates of crime in the Netherlands, more and more prison buildings were closed down and available for reuse.

After the Bijlmerbajes prison closed, more than 600 weary refugees were given warm beds, meals, and shelter inside the facility until they were granted citizenship and acclimated into society with jobs and housing of their own—but the site was gloomy.

Enter Favela Painting. You may remember this dynamic Dutch Duo from a project they undertook at a slum in Rio back in 2013. They covered hundreds of shacks and shops on a hillside with a rainbow of neon colors, putting local youth to work, some of whom had been drug dealers before learning the new skill of painting.

To brighten up the former prisons’ dreary façades, the same artists from Favela Painting launched the Amsterdam Project in which they invited the refugees themselves to learn how to paint the prison in geometric colors and designs.

Not only did it liven up the concrete community, it also gave the migrants a chance to learn the skills of design and painting, while fostering lasting friendships.

A Gym Made Entirely Out of Melted-Down Knives Provides Powerful Alternative to Violence

This charity has utilized a powerful medium to dissuade youth from getting into trouble on the streets.

Steel Warriors created an outdoor fitness gym that is made entirely out of recycled knives and blades that were confiscated by the police.

The London gym was crafted using over 2.5 tons of steel from steel weapons that might have encouraged a life of crime. According to the charity, they take “careful steps to avoid building with knives that have been used in conflict” and “all knives used have been discounted as evidence and are set for destruction.”

RELATEDWoman Catches Thief Then Takes Him Out For Coffee

“Knives are in the very DNA of the gym,” Steel Warriors co-founder Ben Wintour told Sky News. “If it was just a normal gym people wouldn’t necessarily talk about the (knife crime) issue, but because it’s built into the gym itself, it gets people talking about it.”

Since the gym was established on gang-neutral territory back in 2017, it has garnered praise for its ability to raise awareness about knife crime in London.

Wintour and fellow Steel Warrior co-founder Pia Fontes hope that the exercise space will provide a strong visual example for youngsters to choose wellness and self-care instead of engaging in violence.

Chelsea Soccer Club to Fight Antisemitism by Offering Education at Auschwitz for Racist Fans, Rather Than Bans

Auschwitz main gate - credit, CC Dnalor 01.

As a means of personally combatting antisemitism amongst their fans, the powerful Chelsea football club in England will be offering their fans an alternative to being banned from home games.

Perviously, if a fan had displayed racist behavior towards the Jewish demographic of the fanbase, the club would confiscate their season tickets and bar them from the games for up to three years.

But now, Roman Abramovich, the Jewish owner of the Stamford Bridge stadium in Fulham, London, is spearheading an initiative that will offer the supporters an option: they can either accept the 3-year ban or they can participate in the educational courses that are taught at Auschwitz.

Furthermore, Chelsea is so intent on curbing racist behavior, they will be covering all of the costs of the courses.

“If you just ban people, you will never change their behavior,” said Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, according to The Sun. “This policy gives them the chance to realize what they have done, to make them want to behave better.

“In the past, we would take them from the crowd and ban them, for up to three years. Now we say ‘You did something wrong. You have the option. We can ban you or you can spend some time with our diversity officers, understanding what you did wrong’.”

The initiative has reportedly been backed by the World Jewish Congress and the Holocaust Education Trust.
