Girl’s Christmas Wish Comes True When 400K Strangers Follow Dad’s Hotel Carpet Instagram

Have you ever been at a hotel and noticed that the carpets are a little funkier than the ones you might see in an average home?

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but Bill Young certainly does. In fact, he takes pictures of hotel carpets and posts them to an Instagram account specifically dedicated to the cause.

While Bill’s hobby is certainly unique, he didn’t have much of a social media following for it until recently.

Bill’s daughter, Jill, published a Tweet last month in which she asked people to help make her dad’s Instagram account go viral.

The Youngs hoped that it would garner a few extra followers for Bill and his carpet art.

Jill’s plan worked — although, that’s a huge understatement because Bill’s Instagram gained thousands of new followers overnight.

Needless to say, Christmas came early this year for the Youngs thanks to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Teen Spots Scared Owl Tangled in Soccer Net But Is Able to Cut the Bird Free

It was a regular afternoon for Blake Milliken — until he suddenly became a hero.

He thought he was going to the soccer fields to kick a ball around with some of his friends, but his day took a surprising turn when he discovered something struggling from inside a soccer net.

As he got closer, Blake realized it was a frightened owl in need of a helping hand.

So, the teen took out a small knife that he happened to have in his pocket and he got to work.

“He nicked my hand,” Blake explained. “I didn’t panic. I just stayed calm and waited until he let go, and went on cutting away at the net.”

Soon, Blake’s girlfriend, her parents, and the local police showed up to help finish the amazing rescue. The owl was then brought to a rehab facility, where he will be taken care of and nursed back to health.

Homeless Man Tears Open Deadlocked Door and Rescues Kids From Smoke-Filled Home

When a house went up in flames on Friday, a homeless man risked his own life to rescue two children trapped inside.

Anival Angulo, who lives on the streets of Las Vegas, heard a 3-year-old girl and 10-month-old boy yelling for help from behind the door of their home. Something had caught fire on the kitchen stove, and smoke was starting to pour out of the house.

Even though the children’s grandfather had been babysitting the two youngsters, he had gone into a back room and forgotten about the food in the kitchen. When it caught fire, the senior was unable to make it through the fire to rescue the kids.

Angulo, however, was able to jump the fence, tear open the deadlocked screen door, and pull the children to safety.

“I wrapped up the babies and pulled them out,” Angulo told KSNV. “I knew I had to get them out.”

Meanwhile, the neighbors ran to the rescue of the grandfather and managed to pull him out from a window in the back of the home.

This Font is Designed Specifically For Dyslexia – and it Really Works

While this may look like a slightly more playful version of a regular font, those lines and letters have actually been designed specifically for dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder that makes it harder for people to interpret words, letters, and sentences. While it does not affect a person’s general intelligence, the condition can make it much harder for those who live with the disorder to maneuver language and communications that are like second-nature for everybody else.

After spending years struggling with his own dyslexia, Dutch graphic designer Christian Boer created a special font called Dyslexie as his graduation project from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2008.

RELATEDShatner Wants Clever Kid’s New Word Added to the Dictionary– All We Have to Do is Use it

Dyslexie is a font that employs a dozen different different slants, curves, and styles that have been shown to help dyslexics to read.

The letters use several key characteristics that make them more discernible to dyslexics; for starters, the center of gravity is focused on the bottom of the letters to keep them being flipped upside down in the reader’s mind. Letters that look similarly to each other have slight inclines and subtle changes in their shape so they’re easier to differentiate. The words are also slightly spaced out in order to avoid “jumbling”.

LOOKFrom Terrifying to Terrific – Man Redesigns MRI Machine to Delight Children Instead of Scare Them

Studies on the font’s efficacy have shown that dyslexics can read up to 84% faster, they make 77% less reading errors, and 76% would recommend using the font for other dyslexics.

The best part is that the font can be available for download in various text editors and web browsers either for free, or as little as $5.

Hero Cop Holds onto Van Dangling Over a Bridge Until Man Inside is Saved

Not all superheroes wear capes – but after Martin Willis’s heroic stunt on Friday morning, however, his colleagues have taken to calling him “Superman”.

When Willis was the first cop to arrive on the scene of a traffic collision in West Yorkshire, England, he found that a van had crashed into the safety railing and was left teetering over the side of a bridge with the driver still inside.

As the vehicle swayed dangerously in the wind, Willis grabbed onto the underside of the car and held it steady until West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue arrived.

“First on the scene of a collision on the A1(M) this morning and faced with a vehicle balancing over the edge of a bridge with the driver trapped,” said Willis on Twitter. “After holding on to the vehicle to stop it swaying in the wind I can’t begin to describe my relief when West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue arrived on scene.”

The driver was later taken to the hospital where his description was described as “serious, but not life-threatening”, according to the Independent. If Willis had not been on the scene, the drop off of the bridge might have been fatal.

Despite being called a hero after the incident, Willis says that he was simply doing what any other motorway officer would do.

“I was only doing my job, but feel very honored to receive so much praise,” says Willis.

Watch Lonely Rescued Cockatoo Find Happiness Swinging From Woman’s Ponytail

Snowball the cockatoo was distraught after a plethora of health issues forced his owner to surrender him to a bird sanctuary – but he has finally gotten his strut back after being introduced to a woman’s ponytail.

In a video released by the Rhode Island Parrot sanctuary, the 22-year-old Goffin’s cockatoo can be seen showing off his newfound hobby: swinging back and forth from Erica Collins’s luscious locks.

After seeing Snowball gleefully enjoying his new activity – which is not unlike an avian remake of Miley Cyrus’s “Wreaking Ball” music video – it’s difficult to imagine him as the bummed out bird from earlier days.

Watch Restaurant Worker Cut Up Food for Veteran With Injured Hand

When an older man with an injured arm was having trouble eating his food, a restaurant worker did not hesitate to stop what she was doing and lend a hand.

In a video uploaded by Facebook user Dallas Smith Jr., the man can be seen sitting at a Huddle House restaurant table in Douglas, Georgia.

While he initially tried to cut up his own pancake with a knife and fork, his bandaged arm prevented him from making much progress.

Siri Sends Amusing Text to Guy’s Wife When He Starts Playing the Trombone

It never seems like Siri can understand what you’re saying when you actually need her to work – whether it’s asking for directions to a certain address or asking her to search for something on the internet only to be told: “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that”.

Well, this guy figured out why: apparently you have to speak to her using a trombone.

YouTube musician Paul the Trombonist posted a screenshot of his wife’s phone earlier this week depicting five very peculiar text messages.

Paul and his wife had been chatting about grocery shopping when he sent a large block of text that read something like: “Woo woo wooo hoo hoo wah wah hoo woo wah.”

This is because Paul had accidentally activated Siri’s voice recognition feature before playing his trombone.

The hilarious result? A five-text transcript of trombone sounds, courtesy of Siri.

If you don’t believe that the amusing fluke is possible, Paul tested it out again later and posted footage of his experiment to YouTube.

5 Fun Ways to Get Children Interested in the Topic of History

There are very few subjects as fascinating as human history.

That’s why I find it disappointing if children don’t take an interest in this most time-honored of subjects.

We already know that unlocking a child’s excitement simply requires the right key. As a parent, I’ve found these five techniques to be the perfect catalysts for sparking a kid’s interest.

Take a Trip to a Museum or Historic Site: An afternoon visit to a museum, old battlefield, or a building-turned-tourist-attraction breathes life into history. Children can see the artifacts and walk the sites. Most museums and sites now have interactive exhibits for children to keep their hands busy touching bones, grinding corn, or holding replicas of period pieces.

If you are planning a trip to Washington, DC, the National Archives plans actual sleepovers in the great hall where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution are on display.

RELATEDHow to Raise Your Kids to Have Self-Esteem – 8 Tips and Tricks

History Books with Pictures: A history book cannot have enough pictures to satisfy a child. That’s why the Discovery Series of history and science books have become so popular over the years. Make a habit of reading these books together and engaging in conversation with your child as you turn each visually stimulating page.

Make it Relatable: Children tend to tune-out history when they don’t see how it’s important to them. Whenever possible, take the time to explain how it relates to them. For example: “The reason why everyone can vote today is because 60 years ago, these guys decided to…” If you have an elderly relative or neighbor who is willing to talk about what it was like living long ago, set aside some time for your child to speak with them and help illustrate the connection to history in their young minds.

Give Them History-Themed Toys: Board games like Risk and Axis & Allies are reliable choices, but there are other options. My daughter has a stuffed Gandhi, as well as other historical figures. These are not only tools for cultivating an appreciation in history – they are also role models that she can emulate as she grows up.

RELATEDThe ‘Women of NASA’ Blast-off in New Lego Set

If a child loves video games, you can make sure to provide the ones that teach history at the same time. Many games feature important historical battles, for instance.

Show the Usefulness: Like adults, children are more likely to bond with something when they see it has purpose. You can tell them about how history gives them an understanding of why the world turned out the way it did, or how it can help us learn from our mistakes. For older children and teenagers, you can try to show them that there are careers in history-intensive fields: tourism, politics, and teaching are all areas that make good use of history. After all, I’ve never known a journalist who wasn’t part-historian.

Overall, the more engaged and interested that YOU are in history, the more likely your child is to be interested. Find ways to show them how history is still relevant to their life, and they will not be able to resist learning more!

Mark C. Eddy is the author of the new historical fiction book “No Time To Bury Them” and the historical non-fiction “The Recent History of Terrorism in Canada, 1963-2013”. His third book entitled “The Men In The Woods – which takes place in Newfoundland during 1942 and details the island’s role in the chaotic Battle of the Atlantic – will be published in early 2018. He currently lives in Mississauga with his wife and two daughters.

And this new video is just as sweet.

“My mom loves her,” Stone told TODAY. “She was here for Thanksgiving and she said, ‘Why can’t I take the baby? I want to take her home’ It’s put some pep in her step.”

When Teacher Can’t Afford Holiday Gifts for Sick Son, Students Leave Surprise on His Desk

Nathan Neidigk returned to his classroom earlier this week to find a Christmas miracle waiting for him on his desk – and it was all thanks to his adoring 12th grade students.

The math teacher at Volcano Vista High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico had fallen on hard times earlier this month after his young son was diagnosed with leukemia.

RELATEDWith Kids in Meltdown Mode, Mom’s Day is Saved When Officer Appears

During one of his classes, Neidigk mentioned in passing to his class that he probably wouldn’t be able to afford Christmas presents for his son this year because of the pricey hospital bills.

So, while the single dad spent the week absent from class with his son, his students all pitched in $20 each and bought Neidigk a new Nintendo Switch gaming console, two games, and a case.

The father’s stunned reaction to the gift is bound to melt your heart.

And, more good news: Friends have set up a GoFundMe campaign for the Neidigk family, which has raised $13K of its $30K goal.

‘Cuddle Crew’ Cops Comfort Premature Baby, Giving Relief to Parents

Even though Axel Winch hasn’t been in the world for very long, the newborn has already been through the ringer and back.

Because Axel was born prematurely at just 29 weeks old in August, he has had to undergo dozens of surgeries and treatments in order to keep him alive.

For the first few weeks of Axel’s stay in the NICU at the Children’s Hospital Colorado, his parents, Melissa and Adam Winch, stayed right by his side. Unfortunately, Axel was unable to leave the hospital and his parents had to return to work.

Thankfully, Axel would not be alone.

Melissa is an officer at the Aurora Police Department in Colorado, and Adam used to be a policeman at the station as well. So when the other officers heard about their heartbreaking situation, they knew they had to help.

A team of 20 police officers formed a “cuddle watch” at the NICU to watch over Axel whenever his parents couldn’t be there.

Thanks to the collective love, support, and care that Axel received at the NICU, he was recently released from the hospital and sent home with his parents.

Undecided on What Name to Give Their Cat, Roommates Let Him Choose Instead

Have you ever struggled to decide on the perfect name for your pet? Well, these roommates came up with a pretty ingenious solution.

Instead of arguing with each other about what to name their new kitten, a YouTube user put fate in the young feline’s own paws and had him decide on a title for himself.

LOOKThis Photo of an Old Man and His Kitten is Making Everyone’s Day

The flatmates put several bowls of food in a circle around the kitten. Each food bowl came with a slip of paper featuring a different name. The first three bowls that the kitten ate from were selected for a final round in which the unnamed feline would choose its title.

While we were personal fans of the name “Who Booty”, the cat finally selected “Fireball”: a fine name for a confident cat.

Boy With Autism Breaks Silence, Tells Santa First Christmas Wish

Michael Clyne is a 10-year-old autistic boy who never talks to strangers.

So when he recently broke his silence and told Saint Nick what he wanted for Christmas, his parents were shocked.

The youngster was at a holiday event in Bethpage, New York when he reportedly climbed into Santa’s lap and said ‘apple pie ginger cat’.

The toy he is referring to is a wooden cat-shaped pull toy that was discontinued by the London manufacturer a decade ago. Michael had become obsessed with the little trinket after seeing a picture of it on the internet. He even pulled up pictures of the ginger cat on Google Image so Santa could see what he was talking about.

His family was so surprised that he whispered in Kris Kringle’s ear, they started searching high and low for the ginger cat.

“He made his first official request to Santa Claus, so it was like okay, this has to happen,” Michael’s aunt told CBS New York in the video below. “We have to figure this out.”

“When he showed this to Santa, to me it was like he thinks Santa is the solution,” said Michael’s mom.

A voracious social media search ended with a toy company employee in California telling Michael’s family that he happened to have one ginger cat toy in his possession – and he would be happy to send it their way before Christmas.

Michael’s mom attributes the fateful string of events as a bit of modern Christmas magic.

“I believe you can never stop believing in Santa,” Michael’s mother said.

Sympathetic Cops Cut Some Slack For Overzealous Family Toting Massive Christmas Tree

A Massachusetts family is setting a new bar for “getting into the Christmas spirit”.

Last week, police officers from the Sudbury Police Department posted a photo to Facebook of a minivan with a Christmas tree strapped to the roof.

While this may not seem very out of the ordinary for the holiday season, this was a big Christmas tree; and we mean REALLY big – so big, its greenery was spilling over the sides of the car.

RELATEDBomb Squad Creates Beeping Easter Egg Hunt for Blind Children

It was so shockingly massive, the police officers had to pull the van over because they were concerned that the tree would cause a traffic collision.

To the family’s credit, they had secured yellow “Caution” tape around the tree in hopes that it would encourage motorists to give them a wider berth.

Fortunately for the family, the boys in blue were not inclined to issue a ticket for the holiday-driven infraction. In fact, they took some time to make sure that the tree was extra securely tied to the roof rack before sending the van on its way.

“We just gave a warning in light of the holiday spirit,” Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix told TODAY. “Our intent is ensuring the safety of that vehicle and of other motorists without us squashing Christmas for the kids and the family.”

Astronaut is First to Specifically Contribute to Wikipedia From Space

Millions of people from around the world enjoy the massive wealth of information that is made available by Wikipedia – and now, someone from out of this world has also shown their love for the online encyclopedia too.

Astronaut Paolo Nespoli just contributed the first piece of content that was every created specifically for Wikipedia from space.

Nespoli, who is an Italian astronaut from the European Space Agency (ESA), submitted a sound clip of his voice from aboard the International Space Station that is revolving around the Earth at 17,227 mph (27,724 kilometres per hour).

LOOKHubble Captures Giant Emoji in the Stars

According to a blog post published by the online encyclopedia, the submission was part of an ongoing project launched by Wikipedia to populate articles on celebrities and individuals with sound bytes of the person saying their own name. This allows readers to hear the name’s exact pronunciation, and it gives them a chance to familiarize themselves with the star’s voice.

Since the organization came up with the idea in 2012, a team of volunteers have been collecting sound bytes of people’s names in over 24 different names. Nespoli transmitted an audio clip of himself saying his name in English and Italian.

A dedicated group of employees at the ESA were then able to receive the transmission and disclose it to Wikipedia for free use under the Creative Commons license.

Santa With Autism is Making Sure That No Child is Missing Out

For children with autism or sensory issues, going to busy shopping malls during the holiday season can be far too overwhelming to bear – even if it means missing out on seeing Santa Claus.

Luckily, this man in the red suit has undergone the exact same struggles, and he wants to make sure that other kids with special needs can still get in on the Christmas fun.

For the last three years, Kerry Magro has dressed up as Kris Kringle so he can host specially orchestrated meet-and-greet events for children with autism.

RELATEDStore Finds the Cutest Way for Autistic Boy to Keep Himself Busy in the Aisles

While there are events like these nationwide, Magro – who also has autism – knows how to make a special connection with his young visitors.

The event is totally free for families to attend and it has all the essentials: the lights and music are turned down; the kids can be signed up for a 30-minute time slot so they don’t feel rushed; only 8 children are allowed per time slot; and of course, Magro is an expert at paying attention to their needs.

“Growing up with autism, I had challenges in meeting Santa in public places because I dealt with a lot of sensory challenges, so giant malls were never really an option for me,” he told HuffPost.

“We don’t want them to feel rushed. We don’t want them to feel overloaded. We just want to make it a labor of love.”

MOREUK to Hold First Ever Nationwide Quiet Hour for Autistic Shoppers

29-year-old Magro is a motivational speaker and author who struggled with his autism and sensory issues during his younger years. As he got older and became more adjusted to his needs, he wanted to give back to other kids on the spectrum.

His nonprofit, KFM Making a Difference, gives away college scholarships to autistic students. Over the course of the last six years, the charity has awarded the scholarship to 50 different recipients.

If you want to catch his next workshop, Magro is hosting his special event on December 9th and 10th. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve a spot in advance.
